(A.H.W.) The Stone Roses, unimportant? After all these years A.H.W. still talking absolute bollocks.

As he said in London last night: he remembered them when they were a dodgy Goth band in 1983.

No one likes dodgy Goths ;)

Unimportant translates to-I can't claim to have discoverd them/signed them to my label. I reckon his 3,200 sq. ft. loft couldn't quite accomadate his ego. As for the Roses being Goth's, who cares, they were also the last great guitar band. It's a fact, it says so here on the internet.

It's not often I agree with Wilson (he's dropped the Tony bit it seems !), but I'd even take it a stage further. The Stone Roses were a pile of overhyped steaming dogshit that should never have been allowed into a studio or on stage. Bandwaggon-following in the right place at the right time was all they had going for them. Rant over.

Personally, if it wasn't for The Stone Roses and the whole "Madchester" bollocks I'd never have listened to anything outwith the late 80's indie ghetto. Hearing Fool's Gold as a 16 year old was the singular most important musical event of my life so far. So there.

First of all, I am in the USA, and I do not know what "dodgy" means. Please explain. My opinion of the Roses was, was a great first album. She Bangs The Drums! And of course some one named Mr. Hook produced one of their songs, didn't he? And Goth? COme on now! They never dressed in black or wore dark red lipstick!

Er, yes they did. They were indeed a dodgy Goth band before they discovered 'baggy'. Fools Gold made 'em. The album was already out and doing 'fair to middling' till then. Next thing you know they're superstars. Saw 'em in a club in Brighton in 89 purely cos of the Hook link and there was about 40 people there. Soon as Fools Gold came out they did one HUGE gig at Spike Island then disappeared for about 4 years. Indeed, a decent first album but they'll only ever be remembered for one track.

more people need to defend the roses! i liked them a lot (the first record was great)when you make good music, the hype is a little more forgivable. and since i'm north american, i clearly didn't see them as over-hyped. in fact, i'd prefer to see the stone roses in magazines and hear them in shopping malls than say, pearl jam or jewel. jewel is overhyped and i can't stand her self-important poetic crap. yuck.

The Hook Link??? What you mean the very, very piss poor production of Elephant Stone 7" as opposed to the very, very lovely 12" version as produced by one Mr J. Leckie???

They all lied about their ages - saying they were all 21 or whatever when they first made it big, whereas they were really 26 or 27 or something. And dodgy Goths.

Had a cool dancer, mind - Cressa, was it? But didn't really make the most of him.

I used to own the same T-shirt that Ian Brown's wearing in the Fools Gold video. Thats how cool I was even as a 12 year old ;)

Did go to Spike Island, mind. Total let down generally. The band were okay, but they preceded them with loads of DJ's. Not dance tents or anything, just music banging out from the stage all day. Pointless, and pretty boring. Didn't do their homework at all. Same size as Reading, but with no real focal point.

Don't believe the hype ! Three or four good tracks on the first album, one on the second album. Fools Gold was overhyped. Big music press overkill/arsekiss, very poor live. I cannot ever believe that this lot were apparently voted as one of the most influential bands of all time. Mind you, all that Madchester was a load of bollocks as well, but maybe I just don't go for the "hey, drugs are cool" culture.

It's fair to say they were slightly economical with the truth, I don't buy it that they were wearing flares two years before they made it. Were I disagree entirely with your recollection is of the one song phenomenom line, there was a steady build up of momentum for about a year. The first album was out a hole year before it took off. One of the first places I heard one of their tracks out was a bar called 'Kirklands' notorious for open drug usage and a large Rastafarian presence and an exemplary music policy at the time and it sounded amazing. Do you recall if the widely heralded Blackpool and Ally Pally gigs were after Fools Gold? BTW One Love is a whole lot better than Fool's Gold anyhow. From my perspective they were alraedy riding on a crest of a wave prior to the release of Fools Gold, the only reason it blew up further was that they actually managed to develope thier sound and took it on, rather just match their prior output.

Cressa - recently spotted around various Manchester 'nitespots', dressed like a Big Issue seller, totally off his tits, playing dizzy ducklings all by himself whilst staring at the ceiling. Another wasted bongo playing talent ;)

Cressa, S*** hot with a YoYo, more than a touch competant with the Amps (he didn't quite play the bongos..did he)and wore flares circa 1986 (FACT)

I admit that all the arse kissing of Stone Roses by the Oasis simpletons and any other guitar band under the sun does grate, along with all the music press citing them as sucha huge influence, but the simple fact is they made some great tunes.

Mind you I hate John Squire almost as much as Damon - can anyone remember how dire the Seahorses were?

I love both The Stone Roses and New Order - both have made valuable contributions to music. Out of interest does anyone know which LP has sold the most - New Orders "Technique" or The Stone Roses "The Stone Roses" Finally, I've never associated The Stone Roses with the Goth movement. Maybe that's just a bitter Tony Wilson spin cause he never signed the second best band to come out of Manchester.

Mark, we all have a History don't we?

I think Wilson's frustration stems from a brilliant piece of A&R his ex -Lindsay Reade displayed in securing the Roses deal with Silvertone. She offered sanity as opposed to the eccentric, but clever attributes shown by Gareth Evans.

Both records remain to this day the two most notable reminders of one of the most important eras ever.

What I was getting at mate was that THE STONE ROSES sold a lot more copies than TECHNIQUE ultimately - cos it (TSR) hung round the charts for two years like a bad smell. And who's M Gray? Macy??

You're not going to let this lie, are you Karen?

And, harking back to Mr Shimmin's points about Blackpool and Ally Pally, wasn't this just a sideways attempt to drum up a 'crowd' by a band who weren't big enough to do a genuine sell out tour at that time? Unlike, say the Mondays, who were gigging their bollocks off around that time?

So the 25-30,000 of us at Spike island (enough for a sell out u.k. tour) were oblivious to them prior to the release of Fools Gold? Not wanting to antagonise you big fella, especially as I may be within striking range on Saturday but I think my version of events is a more accurate reflection of what actually happened than yours.:D

In a nutshell, Mr S, yes. The majority of the 30k at SI would probably have been fairly ignorant to the Roses, pre-Madchester.

How many made the Empress Ballroom and Ally Pally gigs? 3k in Blackpool, maybe 5k at AP? Certainly not much more than that.

Fool's Gold pushed 'em onto a much much bigger stage. It's a fact. You saying they couldn't played SI in 89 and still have Sold Out? But they fancied Blackpool instead cos it was more intimate?

It's like the Mondays. They could sell out the T&C, Free Trade Hall, etc, no problems at the end of '89. Had a bloody huge following. How the fcuk did they suddenly make that leap to G-Mex and Wembley gigs just three months later? It's not as if Hallelujah was even a passable single. Probably ranks as one of their most unlistenable, IMO. I couldn't believe they would entertain the idea of trying something as huge as the G-Mex and they then ended up doing 2 nights there in March 90.

Both bands were hyped to death at the close of 89, and the start of 90. Such is life. All that Madchester bollocks. Was probably the beginning of the end for both of 'em, if truth be told.

What I'm saying is, if you were there you could feel the potential. I saw the Mondays at Liverpool Uni in a crowd of about 2,000 and it was obvious they would soon be playing much bigger venues obviously I'm speaking with hindsight but I think, if like me you bought the N.M.E. every week it was obvious that both bands were about to explode. I recall reading the spread with the pictures of the Roses on Blackpool beach, a girl I'd just started seeing at the time went, as did about three other people I knew. In essence my point is, it was a steady build up of momentum and IMO they both had the goods to back up the hype in 'Bummed' and 'Stone Roses' two of my all time favourite albums.

Tidy call. For those of you @ The International II November 88 u too will have sensed that The Roses were destined for the big lads league. I remember picking up a copy of the NME with A.H.W. side by side with Shaun and thinking this is F****** brilliant. Brilliant Pop Music. Not hype. Pop music. Listen, if that record had of surfaced in any given period of time away from Madchester The Roses would have still sold out Spike Island. They were spiralling towards the F****** sky, Man.

Allen, Blackpool was literally their last chance to say a massive Ta to all of those who'd forced the issue right from the beginning (u know, fellow Goths). And what a F****** gig!!!

As for The Mondays? Well, you were there down the front @ ULU in February 89 weren't you? And you're gonna tell me that wasn't one of the most chaotic, brilliant, fucked up gigs you are ever likely to witness? So what do we do? Lets all go out and buy the brand new King Of The Slums long player? No! You & I my friend spread the Word. Go see The Happy Mondays, they are a F****** giggle. Go On!

I did indeed go to the Mondays at ULU. And shook Mr Tony Wilson's hand on a fire exit on the way out. But the audience there wasn't the same audience that would be watching them a year later and preaching all this 'baggy' and 'Madchester' shite.

So the Mondays did enough that Saturday evening to warrant enough attention resulting in the proceeding gigs @ both Dingwalls & ULU to sell out? Then, 2 mad sold out gigs later everyone present suddenly gets all 'street'? The Mondays are no longer cool. So everyone who attended Dingwalls & ULU & The Astoria & Kilburn & The Hacienda & FTH gives the G-MEX party in March 90 (at the height of 'BAGGY'?) a naughty massive blank? Then, it's all curtain haircuts, Aztec draw tops, moody clown fake flares and even worse, spot the W***** walkin around with the maraccas and all the good guys kinda disappear like?...Just wondering, u know.

Stone Roses = pure class between So Young and One Love:nod: With all the shite that happened with the court case et al, it destroyed them! the favourite argument for me is "What if?" They coulda been fuckin mega:nod: But IMHO they threw it all away - coulda been head up arses routine - or maybe some other underlying facts - not sure meself! Spike Island was a great idea - but when yer stuck a mile away from the fookin stage - it was a bit of a bast! Favourite song has always been Elephant Stone 12" ( and yes Hooky produced it;) ) but all their singles and b-sides were fookin great (except for the annoying songs like simone and guernica which are the songs reversed:nonono: ) I'll always hold the Roses close to me heart......but What If?

Anyone go to Glasgow Green June '90...there last ever gig prior to the "Second Coming"...in a sweaty tent, excellent, a DJ set from Harri was about all we got by way of support despite rumours that it was gonna be The Charlatans who had played The Mayfair the night before. The best night I ever had as a spotty sixteen year old.

I think the Mondays did much more to warrant further investigation than the G-Mex gig itself. They were dire that night, saved at the bell by Tart Tart and WroteFL. Don't think there was any movement down the front till then. Finsbury Park surely brought 'em to most people's attention?

Only decent thing at G-Mex 90 was Barney's attempt at 808's Magical Dream, but with his microphone too bloody low in the mix.

And it's the flares and Aztec tops that will always leave the bitter taste. Fcuking ridiculous. And those bloody 'ja' james t-shirts too. Utter w*nk. That's how I'll largely remember the Roses.

Sorry, babe, the Angels were shite. And, as for Northside. ..

Unfortunately, I lived in Mancland at the end of 89. Platt Lane. Fcuk me, it's Grim Up North.

can i stick my oar in now? the roses & the mondays started around the same time, both started off sounding a bit pants, the roses as goths as has been said previously (the nme had an ace picture of them from that period in a "when we were young" section once - it was hilarious) but both developed into something 1000 times better. both debuted on totp on the same show after a decade of existence (more or less) 1st came across the roses on the release of made of stone went to see them at the bristol bierkeller on the 89 tour & it was the biggest queue I have ever seen at the venue, the buzz was huge from the hype. this was around the time of she bangs the drums but before fools gold (my copy says what the worls is waiting for on the front, not fools gold, was a double A single but fg soon took over) they seemed to get progressively bigger after made of stone, each single selling more copies & getting more airplay. the gig was great, resurrection was good, the whole no encore thing miffed a bit but still.... then nothing from them for ages.

the mondays career kicked off around the same time again during the madchester era but they maintained it longer til they self destructed with the homophobic comments being one turning point, the collapse of factory & the bahamas recording sessions others.

dug albums out for both recently, both sound good to me still. wfl, 24hpp, tart tart, she bangs the drums, made of stone, fools gold - all classics. (but the mondays were never goths......)

Fcuk me, Dave, can't we kill this thread?

HOWEVER ... would defo not agree that the Mondays started off sounding pants. Defo ended up like it. But didn't start like it.

Bummed came out a full year before that TOTP appearance and was, IMO, their defining moment. Squirrel had a couple of classic trax on it too - Tart Tart & Kuff Dam - and then of course spawned a title track cos the album name got so popular (I believe there's a film due out soon using the same moniker?). And, of course, Freaky Dancin' was simply superb on its day. Produced by one B.Sumner of the Order. Frankly, they went down hill with Step On and beyond and I never really believed the hype of Pills & Thrills. They'd lost it by that point.

What amazed me at Borders last week was that T Wilson is still completely sold on the idea that Ryder was a genius character, despite being the c... that brought it all crashing down. Having read the book, I'm convinced that Wilson is mad.

No WAY is Reni the greatest drummer ever...the most overrated drummer more like! Actually, he's confessed that he's a better GUITARIST than drummer, which is why he's given up the sticks in his new band now, preferring to strum instead, haven't you heard?

:cool2: :cool2:

But you have to remember that John Squire showed the way for all the best guitarists in the world, even before he was born, Ian Brown is vocal coach to Placido Domingo as well as doing his own barbers shop quartet on his own, and Cressa is the head honcho at the Royal Academy for Contempory Dance. It's all a load of fucking hype and bullshit, and I am utterly amazed that there are still people out there who still genuinely believe that the Stone Roses were any good.

There is NO "The" in Happy Mondays - look at all their fooking sleeves....!! Do we say THE New Order? THE Joy Division? THE Primal Scream? THE Northside? Do we fook!!) over the Roses, seeing as I wasn't that enthralled with their first album, but Happy Mondays' first album was like nothing I'd ever heard - pure abrasive yob-funk that was like a kick in the teeth to all the prissy guitary indie bollox that was still going on then (Primal Scream brought out "Sonic Flower Groove" that very same year - 1987 - And what did THEY sound like? A bunch of piss poor Byrds copyists...!). Funny thing was, I was getting into all that hardcore (Black Flag, Fugazi, Husker Du) stuff around the same time as well, but Happy Mondays gave everything a scuzzy dirty groove that these other bands never had. That's what got me hooked on them. But then of course, soon as they broke big, they went all cover version potty on us and basically just copped out......"Step On"??? Twisting my melons - my arse!!As for the Roses, just exactly what is John Squire (the so called guitarist of his generation) getting up to right now since breaking up the awful Shitehorses? What I was getting at mate was that THE STONE ROSES sold a lot more copies than TECHNIQUE ultimately - cos it (TSR) hung round the charts for two years like a bad smell. And who's M Gray? Macy??

:cool2: :cool2:

Hubert, RENI, the greatest drummer EVER produced by this country or just Ma*chester?

No WAY is Reni the greatest drummer ever...the most overrated drummer more like! Actually, he's confessed that he's a better GUITARIST than drummer, which is why he's given up the sticks in his new band now, preferring to strum instead, haven't you heard?

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT SORT YOUR FUCKIN HEAD OUT MAN....YOU TELLIN ME RENI COULDN'T PLAY? HE COULD PLAY THE FUCKIN THINGS IN HIS SLEEP. COS STEVIE M IS HARDLY KEITH MOON IS HE? & THE RUB? NA NA NA NA. RENI, OVERRATED? HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA. RIDE ON.

LISTEN PAL, THE ROSES ARE FUCKIN TOP SO YOU CARRY ON BEING AMAZED PAL

You've a point with what Mani has said in the past. I think the end began with how John Squire stalled on the 2nd record. I'd love them to come back though.

I remember 1989 when the effect of New Order's Technique was waring off and I was desperate to listen something decent as all that aceeed shit was pretty shallow. I got a hold of The Stone Roses first LP and it put my faith back into music. I remember listening to the intrsumental section on "I Am The Resurrection" and thinking these guys are good! Also, who cannot like the melodies in Sally Cinnamon and All Across The Sands.

I was there! It was more about the day than the actual gig. It was simply getting away from the bump and grind of Manchester just for the day. The Roses were ok. I've seen them play and sound better (Glasgow Green May 90). Manchester in the Area??? Regionalism has never been cool, though I'm certain Ian was merely getting carried away with it all. This, after all was their first real big gig.

Exactly right, Mr. Gray. This whole thread reminds me of a quote that Grant Hart of Husker Du had when they were given a bunch of grief for being labeled as strictly a hardcore punk band despite their later work. "People call us hardcore, but they don't call us fifth graders, and that's something we once were". Matter Aug.84. I always like to do the Du, so to speak, just for the benefit of ZZ. BTW, this is my second and last post in this infernal thread.

Yeah. Scored 50 and took 5-26 for Worcester vs Old Hill in the Birmingham League. Followed it up the next day with a ton.

Two blistering performances in One day then. Ignore the fakers ZZ. Bring it all down...

Any news on The Rub, Karen?

Originally posted by Allen Jarvis Did go to Spike Island, mind. Total let down generally. The band were okay, but they preceded them with loads of DJ's. Not dance tents or anything, just music banging out from the stage all day. Pointless, and pretty boring. Didn't do their homework at all. Same size as Reading, but with no real focal point. Here! Here!

Stone Roses were still absolutely hopeless live. Ian Brown cannot sing - he should have been in the Spice Girls with his voice.

What about the rest of your scathing opinions? Mellowed towards them at all? It's weird to see your comments and think about how you're attatched to something you said, what seems so long ago.

Haven't bothered going back through the thread to be honest - may do now out of curiosity.

Originally posted by KnownPleasures It's not often I agree with Wilson (he's dropped the Tony bit it seems !), but I'd even take it a stage further. Bandwaggon-following in the right place at the right time was all they had going for them. Rant over.

No, I still agree with this one !

Originally posted by KnownPleasures Don't believe the hype !

And this one. Hey, this is fun ! I could do another Mike and get 1000 extra posts replying to myself ! :evil4:
