Unimportant translates to-I can't claim to have discoverd them/signed them to my label. I reckon his 3,200 sq. ft. loft couldn't quite accomadate his ego. As for the Roses being Goth's, who cares, they were also the last great guitar band. It's a fact, it says so here on the internet.

It's not often I agree with Wilson (he's dropped the Tony bit it seems !), but I'd even take it a stage further. The Stone Roses were a pile of overhyped steaming dogshit that should never have been allowed into a studio or on stage. Bandwaggon-following in the right place at the right time was all they had going for them. Rant over.

Personally, if it wasn't for The Stone Roses and the whole "Madchester" bollocks I'd never have listened to anything outwith the late 80's indie ghetto. Hearing Fool's Gold as a 16 year old was the singular most important musical event of my life so far. So there.

First of all, I am in the USA, and I do not know what "dodgy" means. Please explain. My opinion of the Roses was, was a great first album. She Bangs The Drums! And of course some one named Mr. Hook produced one of their songs, didn't he? And Goth? COme on now! They never dressed in black or wore dark red lipstick!

more people need to defend the roses! i liked them a lot (the first record was great)when you make good music, the hype is a little more forgivable. and since i'm north american, i clearly didn't see them as over-hyped. in fact, i'd prefer to see the stone roses in magazines and hear them in shopping malls than say, pearl jam or jewel. jewel is overhyped and i can't stand her self-important poetic crap. yuck.

Er, yes they did. They were indeed a dodgy Goth band before they discovered 'baggy'. Fools Gold made 'em. The album was already out and doing 'fair to middling' till then. Next thing you know they're superstars. Saw 'em in a club in Brighton in 89 purely cos of the Hook link and there was about 40 people there. Soon as Fools Gold came out they did one HUGE gig at Spike Island then disappeared for about 4 years. Indeed, a decent first album but they'll only ever be remembered for one track.

The Hook Link??? What you mean the very, very piss poor production of Elephant Stone 7" as opposed to the very, very lovely 12" version as produced by one Mr J. Leckie???

Don't believe the hype ! Three or four good tracks on the first album, one on the second album. Fools Gold was overhyped. Big music press overkill/arsekiss, very poor live. I cannot ever believe that this lot were apparently voted as one of the most influential bands of all time. Mind you, all that Madchester was a load of bollocks as well, but maybe I just don't go for the "hey, drugs are cool" culture.

It's fair to say they were slightly economical with the truth, I don't buy it that they were wearing flares two years before they made it. Were I disagree entirely with your recollection is of the one song phenomenom line, there was a steady build up of momentum for about a year. The first album was out a hole year before it took off. One of the first places I heard one of their tracks out was a bar called 'Kirklands' notorious for open drug usage and a large Rastafarian presence and an exemplary music policy at the time and it sounded amazing. Do you recall if the widely heralded Blackpool and Ally Pally gigs were after Fools Gold? BTW One Love is a whole lot better than Fool's Gold anyhow. From my perspective they were alraedy riding on a crest of a wave prior to the release of Fools Gold, the only reason it blew up further was that they actually managed to develope thier sound and took it on, rather just match their prior output.
