My laptop already has wireless set up, and it's slow at home. Can I just purchase a router and use it, or do I need to by a cable modem too?

Most computer stores are staffed by people who panic if you ask them how much a PC is without windows...one even told me..."you can't use a pc without windows"...impressive exprts.

that depends, if your wireless is built into the building, then you will probably need the modem too, however if your connecton arrives via traditional means and then runs into a wireless access point, it should be a simple matter of plugging an ethernet cable into a socket there.
the modem/router boundary is grey at best with broadband, ours is a "modem" but has plenty of router and firewall functions (a conexant chipset based machine, it runs freeBSD (essentially a basic verson of Mac OSX) )
My house doesn't have an ethernet cord, though I have thought of installing one since I use that connection in my dorm.

Cos if it comes in on a hard connection of any kind you really just have to pop the iresless access point out and hard lug yerself in direct, cos there will already be a modem/router in place.
No, my laptop picks up a signal from a nearby linsys network. If my Wi-fi works like that, then isn't a wireless router enough?
