Assuming Rooney is fucked,what's the contingency plan?
I would take Stuart Downing to play wide left,and bring Joe Cole inside to play second striker,in behind Owen(assuming Owen is going himself) where Rooney would have been..Lots of other options ofcourse.
What would you do to make the best out of a gloomy looking situation?
Can't really argue with the above, it's what I've been banging on about all morning here!
We're a bit short on quality strikers if Rooney misses out and Owen ain't ready. Defoe will have to be in the squad, but besides that there's only Eeyort Crouch. Vassell ain't strong enough, Heskey's shite, Bent ain't up to it yet, Beattie will concede too many freekicks.
Cole just behind Owen.
Gerro on the right.
Becks on the Bench.
Andy Johnson maybe. but he's playing in the shit league now, and Sven don't care. So Darren Bent in squad i suppose.

Cole playing off Owen for me. Or perhaps Gerrard.
Not too sure about Downing at the moment, perhaps this will give an opportunity for Carrick as a holding midfielder instead, thus freeing up either Lampard or, again, Gerrard off the front man.
Don't understand the Defoe thing. He's done nish this season, and hasn't contributed much now that he's got a run in the Spurz side. I'd give Bent the nod over him. Depends how these forthcoming friendlies go, I s'pose?!

Accomodating Gerrard and Lampard is a problem!
I think Gerrard can play the holding role aswell as anyone,because the lad can play anywhere for me,and maybe he should play there for the good of the team,tho it takes something away from his own game..

This is a bit complicated and Downing is out of form (I guess you want him in the England squad just because you support Boro). If you have an injured striker, the best thing to do is replace him for another striker, right? I would pick Bent then.

Out of form,Stuart Downing? He's coming right into form and is relativly fresh after half the season out injured..
I take it you did'nt see his 3,yes 3 assists in Boro's Uefa Semi final 4-2 victory over Steau Bucharest!

He has a brother called Chris. He was in our class in juniors. Can't remember if Chris was any good at football though.

If he's got to gamble, Dean Ashton...he's got something about him. Plus he's match fit (unless Carragher gets hold of him ) whilst neither Owen nor Rooney will be. The others will be like rabbits in the headlights I reckon and Crouch without Rooney ain't going to cut it.

Fowler and the Liverpool faithful are desperate for a new deal following the Legend's return to Anfield in January. Fowler has scored 4 goals since then plus another 3 that were unjustly ruled out which should amount to having done enough to earn him a 1 year extension to his present contract.
his own club manager keeps saying he's not quite ready for club play. he's defo not the best of the best to be on the national team

I think he's looking quite sharp. He hasn't lost that nack of knowing were the back of the net is. His movement touch and intelligence is all top-drawer. Is the international game all about pace anyway?

Can't help but wonder what Paraguay are talking about today either. he may get his fitness back in time and not like his skills would have gotten rusty. But your second choices think can play smart and strong enough without him. The words around this part are about the Italians naming their line-up for training. Filippo Inzaghi back wearing Italy's colours after a couple years. 12 goals for AC Milan. 4 goals in Champions. .on the injury front. Totti broke his leg and damaged ankle ligament in February and is just now back in form. Vieri knee injury isn't going well. lots can happen before the 12 June.
This might have been said on Page 1 of the thread... I dunno, I didnt read it.
Darren Bent needs to be given more of a chance than the one game he had; he is fast and clinical from what I've seen, and a natural striker.
As for Beattie, I dont think he's up for the grade; Fowler seems to be playing better under Rafa, but is currently behind Morientes and Cisse in terms of starting a game there.
What about Dean Ashton?
Dean Ashton for me.
Aaron Lennon should be in the squad and with his pace he would murder most defences and he's worth throwing on up front for the last ten minutes even if it isn't his normal position. Brazil's defence is creaking before they've started the tournament I read the other week Roque Jr is still in with a chance of going FFS!

But to be honest, i don't think there is any player that can be taken in Rooney's place, that will even come close to doing the same job.

Luca Toni must start for the Italians. He's scored 28 goals in Serie A this season for a resurgent Fiorentina. A tasty 22/1 to be the tournament's top scorer. As fer England i'd have Defoe starting.

How rusty did Pippo Inzaghi look in the Champions League semi-final? Like a reserve midfielder being made to play up front against his wishes, yards off the pace, his second touch was a tackle, shocking really for someone who used to be a feared striker.

No questioning his skills. Just hope that it's not a repeat of Portugal-03 when he went out on injury and it took 10 weeks. not sure if it was a match or a practice but they tagged him electronically and it was marked that Rooney Pele Blanco- covered pretty much every inch of the pitch over the course of the game.
As far as Inzaghi goes hes a touch high strung and a drama-dive but does set himself up well and can change the whole tide in a few minutes. His spot on the training squad is getting challenged by two mm leggy Iaquinta and Cucarelli who use height as Pippo lol. Filippo. Inzagol uses speed. Geneva 31 May ..well see how the line-up goes.

This is part of the problem really. We can select 22 players,yet really there is about 10 who must go-even if they`re injured. Its stupid,some players are automatic selections Beckham,Gerrard,Lampard et al will all go regardless of their fitness.
We took Beckham last time-same situation as Rooney,he played,but at a poor standard. Even if Rooney goes now,its only gonna be 1 or 2 games before someone takes in out again. Same goes for Owen-then were over there without strikers.
