What do you recall of it?
Was the first World Cup i saw .was too young for Germany 74.Black and white tv.tickertape welcome for the Argies.Mario Kempes (cunt,wanker)
was absolutley gutted when the Dutch lost the final.made worse by the fact my brother supported Argentina in the final.Which he denies ALL knowledge of these days.

I remember watching the Jock-Peru game in a huge tent at Cub Camp (yep, I was a cub!) and the whole place going absolutely mental as the Jocks lost.
Even at that age, tsk tsk!

First WC I remember watching was Espana 82, I was 7! watched loads and loads of it, we used to run home from school for the games. Honduras and all that. Can remember David Narey's "toepoke" c Jimmy Hill (He's a poof) against the mighty Brazilians. But as was later said, that just upset them, we then suffered a gubbing and I'll not forget Zico's bending free-kick leaving Alan Rough just turning his head watching the ball hit the net.

flying bogroll and debris is all i can remember of that one, which is odd cos I remember the 76 olympics better. Spain 82 is the first i properly remember, I had the Engerland AND Norn Iron team records, sad bastard. Still remember being SO gutted at Whiteside's goal being disallow.....

Actually VIVIDLY remember both Nurburgring and Mt Fuji races of 75, Lauda getting BBQ'd in the former and Hunt winning the WC in the latter.
i still have a book on it somewhere. not too many good memories there for me. not like 1974 (which i don't remember).
one weird thing was i didn't find out till years later the games were played in the Argentine winter.I always thought i was watching the games being played in fairly hot conditions.Looking back they of course weren't because none of the players were ever sweating.

I just loved Holland in 78.How couldn't you?.Arrie Haan's 40 yard pile drivers and the Van Der Kerkhoff brothers.
Oh and Austria's Hans Krankl knocking West Germany out was another great moment too
I have vague memoris of running round the school field in 1974, pretty much everyone was Gerd Muller or Beckenbauer with the occasional Dutch player thrown in, probably for comedy names as much as anything.
1978 - Cubillas and Krankl were they outstanding players for me but having seen Souness play for Boro versus Super Leeds United I spent a couple of weeks saying he should be playing. When he finally did it was too late - and he should have played every match.
i will be in argentina at world cup final time and hoping to see them in the final while im in Buenos Airies. the league there will be off but im trying to find out if there will be any friendlies or warm up games while im there, either way i will be visiting Boca & probably River too

comedy names euh.. Fantastic. Gutted about making it to the finals..and then losing but too young to truly appreciate it all. The politics + sport connection really started to hit home w/ this one. also Rensenbrink, the two van der Kerkhoffs, Arie Haan and Johan / Jan Boskamp heading back from R.S.C. Anderlecht in Belgium. the second round against Peru was astonishing because Argentina needed to beat Peru by 4 after Brazil beat Poland earlier in the day. What also stands out is Boskamp's accomplishments as manager in replacing Tony Pulis. To various degrees w/ each World Cup or Olympic Games I go through the question of who do you play for- your birth country or the place that gives you the opportunity. this last 1/2 hour or so was over on footballdatabase.com w/a couple of questions + should have headed over to NOOL. The Korea/ Japan venues were something.
The best ever theme music, for me the best ever sporting spectacle. Huge stadium's engulfed in ticker-tape and streamers. Going to school the next day and trying to replicate 30 yard dipping blammers from Kempes or Luque.
Robbie Rensenbrink played for Anderlecht in the 1st Liverpool game I ever went to.

Clive Thomas. Wasn't it a Zico goal against Sweden? I remember me and my Scots mate Jock Walker camping out in a big tent on my back lawn, then going in during the early hours to watch the games. Teofilo Cubillas - the name still reminds me of unbridled mirth!
I remember Gerd Muller being the last sticker I needed for the Pannini book, and having to send off for it because none of my mates had a swapsie.
Also didn't one of the Van Der Kerkhoff's take to the pitch for the final with his arm in some sort of plaster? I seem to remember some confusion as to whether he'd be allowed to play with it on.
The '74 final is the second live game I ever saw on TV - the first being that year's FA Cup final. Sadly my memory is very hazy. I was only seven.
I remember about 40,000 being at hampden just to wave the team goodbye on their way to argentina. when they returned they had people throwing copies of 'allys tartan army' at them at the airport...
the defeat to peru was bad enough, but the 1-1 draw with Iran was a shocker..
archie gemmills goal against holland is still in the top five goals ive ever seen, we had to beat holland by 3 clear goals to go through to the next round and were 3-1 up at one point and all over holland and everyone was sure we were going to do it, then johnny rep shot from about 30 yards and scotland were out.
remember scotland did actually have good players at this time - dalglish, souness et al, and the manager ally mcleod had promised the nation 'we would come back with a medal'! worse still, most of us belived him...
I remember: Johan Cruyff boycotted the tournament because of the politics in Argentina. Beckenbauer too...? Also, we had to suffer Ossie Ardilles and that other git with the mustache at Spurs for years to come because of that tournament. One of those Arie Haan strikes was against Italy in the semi after Willy Brandts had scored at both ends to leave it 1-1. Argentina had to beat Peru 4-0 to get through the groups and as it happened, Peru's keeper was Argentinian by birth (and so his relatives were probably still alive at the end of the tournament!) Rensenbrink hit the post in the last minute of normal time for the Dutch in the final. Brian May got the winner for the Argies in extra time....
Best memory was the two Arie Haan goals though, that ball just kept on going and going and both keepers were too busy going

yeah his wrist was in plaster,the Argies spent a long timE before the kick off protesting it should be removed as it was dangerous.but they were really trying to unnerve the Dutch.They had also kept the Dutch waiting out on the pitch before the start of the game.Why didn't the two teams walk out together ffs? Would never see that nowadays in a major final of any kind.

and of course...Mario Kempes for Argentina, who virtually won them the World Cup.
