Saw Da Vinci Code last night

No real interest in seeing, and I'm willing to bet a lot of otherwise apathetic types like myself might be swayed to see it because of all the religious protests against it. If you want to get the word out on your movie, piss off Christians, they'll do all the advertising you would ever want :p

In the same boat. My main bone to pick is how the author claims it is based on what he thinks are true facts. Watched a PBS and a discovery channel shows; each debunked the facts in the book to the point that it was quite hilarious to believe the author could stand behind such obvious inconsistecies. If he hadn't claimed it to be truth, I might be more interested to watch. . .but for now, I'll stay at home.

I have no desire to see the movie because I hated the book. It wasn't just that Dan Brown tried to pass off a bunch of pseudo-history as fact, it was that he was suddenly praised for writing a great novel when he's a hack that realized bashing Christianity is better than being a two-bit Tom Clancy ripoff. People who call the book a great thriller are basically giving the finger to authors like Frederick Forsyth, Ken Follettand John Le Carré who, at the top of their game, could beat the crap out of what Dan Brown has regurgitated...

I've not really been caught up in 'The Da Vinci Code' wave of hype, but has Dan Brown actually tried to pass it off as fact and truth?

i'm not too sure,i've never read the book and probably never will, way too much 'this is the best book ever' bullshit surrounding it for my liking. but at end of the day the book is in the fiction section at my local book shop says alot about truth within the book.

Here in Manila, Authorities Rated the movie as an "R",meaning for adults only....cant really figure it out....there are more movies that have more "violent" scenes but got away with a "GP" (General Patronage) rating....Dont you just love the philippines?!!(being sarcastic)!!!

Yeah, Forsyth, Follett, and Le Carre are the best "thriller" writers out there because they actually invest a lot of time in making you believe that what's going on could have happened (a lot of their stuff takes place in the past or recent past). Another name I'd add to that list is Jack Higgins, who deals primarily with WWII stuff but also did some IRA-related stuff. They all might not be considered "literature", but there was a time when I read nothing else. Good stuff

Just as I have no interest in seeing the film, I have no interest in reading the book

it probably has something to do with the fact that the Philipines is a strongly catholic country.

I'm anxious to read other NOOLers' reviews of this movie, since there is a possibility that I may be checking out this movie a week from today.

During the PBS and Discovery channel shows, Dan Brown was defending his novel as "facts" he believes in. I guess it's one way to stir controversy, but to me it looked so ridiculious.

Anyone who actually believes such bullshit is surely an idiot. Of course, even if it were true, it would hardly surprise me. Who gives a damn what Jesus did with his penis? If he had a whole harem it wouldn't bother me one bit. The "family values" loyalists just can't seem to get around the idea that their benevolent savior might want a family of his own too. And yet they applaud when Mel Gibson tears the shit out of The Christ because it's "morally uplifting," beneath more gore than I've seen in the last 12 horror flicks put together. Bunch of fucking hypocrites. If they didn't have their thumbs up their own asses over the supposed "divinity" of Christ, maybe they'd allow their priests to marry and stop fucking little kids. And don't get me started on the Catholic Church. When an organized religion selectively changes and mistranslates their holy book to fit their political beliefs, launches campaigns of genocide and Inquisition, maintains complicity with fascists, harbors child molesters, condemns homosexuals, and indirectly contributes to the spread of epidemics like AIDS....well then, what they actually do behind closed doors should be of little surprise.

I saw it today and it was awful. Regardless of the subject matter the film was just plain bad. Awful story line, terrible cinematography and Hanks.

True, but I have no trouble with people passing off fiction as truth--IF they do it well, and the Coen brothers certainly did. Same can be said for Werner Herzog's documentaries, which are often very stylized, blending fiction and fact. When it's just some pop pap that is repackaged for mass consumption by Hollywood and that overzealous people take too seriously because they either need to latch onto a conspiracy theory or because they're trying to protect their "faith" (as if people with a real commitment to faith would actually need to protect themselves from challenges to it!), then I start to have problems with it.

Fargo is actually a top movie.

I'd hate to be that Japanese tourist who saw Fargo and then ended up freezing to death in a snowbank after coming to Minnesota and digging around trying to find Steve Buscemi's lost money.

On second thought, Darwin could've been right.

Fargo was on last night. I saw the film 7 times, I think.

Back to The Da Vinci Code. My community newspaper published a wire report that bashed it. I didn't think it would be bad when it is adapted to film. I need to see it for myself. I couldn't believe this.

actually,the hype on the film made it more popular ....restricting its showing made more people curious....

Pity the tourist didn't go in the summer.

I heard that Fargo is fictional, and that the intro "based on a true story" was just creativity on the Coen's part. Sometimes, the Coens really turn my head.

I read DaVinci Code and thought it was great. I can't wait to see the movie! I don't care about the reviews.
