New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84) is their best I would say; highly recommended and lots of quality synth work. Street Fighting Years is really good too but it's just a shame they've been panned so much recently the early work barely gets a look-in now.

They lost it (for good) around Real Life which was a bit too U2-ey for my liking.

Did the overly-English music press not push the likes of Postcard records, then we had the likes of Tallulah Gosh, Primal Scream and the Soup Dragons as mainstays of that C86 shite and subsequent to that the whole cult of the Jesus & Mary Chain.

Simple Minds earlier output was certainly perhaps more interesting and less cockrocking than later material but if you compare their output from 79-83 it ain't quite Joy Division / early New Order, now is it?!

Must confess I do like a lot of their early stuff myself, but yeah, no NO/JD.

New gold Dream is proably the only track of theirs that still appears on my hi-fi, oh, and theme from great cities ( tho usually as "real life" by corporation of one)

I am related to the Jockey Lester Piggott I can salsa dance I once got 97% in my Building Law exam, which was used to make Bolton Institute into a University I physically cannot burp I nearly died of pneumonia when i was 12 I invented the post-it

My step Dad did backing guitars for The Sweet, Cliff Richard and Wizzard...

I was a member of the UK Royal Army Medical Corps; turns out that the NZ equivalent has a famous Lt. Col with my surname- not sure if we're related!

My Mum nearly sold Barney a fireplace once...

I survived the ridiculous 29 mile Shunner Shuffle fell run about 10 years ago and did the Tough Guys run twice (ahh... the benefits of short term memory loss)...

I could go on, but I hear a chorus of snores rising...

I never said "I was there" Al and I freely admit I discovered them a good bit later on (mid-nineties) when most of their albums were laid out in front of me so I figured out which ones I liked and which were naff. Plus we had a cache of NME mags and then Q stretching from the early/mid 80s in our house which I used to read so that's where I got most of my "impression" from.

OK, poor choice of words from me, it was late last night but there was a vague reason for me saying this. I think it was to do with the fact that (at the time) the music press saw U2 as saints but branded SM as pariahs when they were both producing very similar music. Couldn't help but think the stigma there came from being Scottish wasn't as fashionable as being Irish in the rock world. Let's face it, Runrig did us no favours :lol:

I totally agree with you here but I never actually said in my post they were better than JD/NO, I was just trying to say their early stuff is pretty good.

Both of my Grandmothers are twins but my mother only had two single births, despite the fact that Doctors warned her that it was more probable she'd have a multiple birth than a single.

So the weird fact about me is that I'm not a twin. :P
