Description (revised)

The mother of all transistorized vocoders, prototype of early 70´s custom built for german electronic duo of that period: documented by back cover photo of KW's album "Ralf & Florian" and in some part in the artwork on inside sleeve.

The device was used for two studio productions, title "Ananas Symphonie" including synthetic vocals and rhythm track in conjunction with lapsteel guitar and rhythm machine, as well for "Kristallo" with rhythm machine and EMS-Synth.

Later used to sound the KW's intro for "Autobahn"

The vocoder contains 12 analysis and synthesis filter channels, 2 compressors for speech or carrier signal and excitation signal inputs, voiced /unvoiced detector and switch board for filter-matrix.

It was conceived , built and constructed by electronic engineers in the area of Physikalisch-Technische BundesAnstalt (PTB) Braunschweig, Dipl.Ing P.Leunig and Dipl.Ing. K.Obermayer.

Later the well known german music studio engineering and supplier company R.Barth K.G.,Hamburg, Germany, boiled down the know-how gained from this project into so called MUSICODER which was produced in small quantities.

That is TOTAL porn, gorgeous sounding and steam driven, what more does a guy need.

I wonder if they ever had to reverse the polarity or do a phase inversion on the flux capacitor.

All of the above i would wager, the common or garden vocoder is a deeply mental piece of kit (originally designed as a military scrambler for transatlantic communication during WWII), and thon thing is far from common.

I DROOL over kit like that, it makes SENSE to me. Black box, 2x64 lcd/led display, cursor keys, menus, like painting the house through the letter box, horrid. I apprecitate all that digital and software emulation gives me the power to do, but I still wish everything had knobs and lights and dials and things I could communicate with.

PS, GNU, Melly will need time on it too I think.

Porn: letchworthy, attractive, desirable and utterly UTTERLY out of my reach (actually, given my current status, a coupla penny chews would stretch things).

Perfectly valid adjective for such an item.

And I'll pass up on sounding like an Engerlish if that's OK, my Cow Orkers would get WAY too big a laugh out of it :D Oh, the grin offends Jarvo, errrrrm..... :)

EDIT: FWIW, I have actually played an original, WORKING Korg vocoder, I evensaid to the guy in the shop "I can't afford this" and he said "who cares, you'll never see another one in this condition, knock yourself out". I assume however that this tingy takes both carrier and modulator from outside rather than combining one external signal with internal synthesis.

Trans: Korg one would sound like the one on BLT, this thing would be far more us creating an effect like o Underworld's "Cowgirl"
