Why do we donate to work colleagues when they leave for a better paid job?

Never quite got this.Every time someone leaves for a new job we have to have a whip round and give them money.

They are leaving for a much better paid job anyway .To confound the misery that we are still stuck in the same workplace they want money off us to supplement the big wad they are going to get in their new job.

I mean , if a colleague is ill off work and struggling to get by i have no problem donating.

A bloke is leaving tommorrow and we have to give him money.

Or maybe i'm just a tight wad:laugh:

I'm guessing you work at a place with lots of women?

When someone leaves my work they have to buy us all beer!

I prefer our way to yours

When I left my job, my last lunch was paid by my boss.. but who the hell gets money for leaving? :skeptic:

Vicious circle. We always give generously to keep the wheels in motion in the hope that we get something nice when we leave too.

Oh, and also, I'm actually not a tightcunt.

So you give to $5.00 to 50 people leaving, and when you leave you'll probably get $75.00 in return.

Can't say that I've heard or done that either, if a long time (and beloved) worker is leaving, there'll be a big after hours party at some bar. Maybe if the person leaving was having some kind of financial hardship due to illness, etc, then maybe I could see doing something. The lazy, slacking, unmotivated short terms who've been at our office are most definitely repaid in kind.

Nope. Cos $5.00 is roughly 3GBP, which I would then consider tight.

Any coinage in cards at our place is frowned upon.

The last two lads I've worked with who recently left got iPods as leaving pressies. But one left to start up his own company, and the other is Oz at the moment, halfway through a round the world trip. Couple of people from here were at the latter's leaving do with me, he'd hired a bar in Brixton. More than happy to hand over cash to set them up with nice pressies cos it had been a pleasure and a privilege working with them and they're both top lads.

Now that ain't a difficult concept to get yer head around?!

Cos we're afriad of looking tight! I object to donating for someone I hardly know, but would be more than happy to do so for a close colleague... We tend to do things in departments - half the people who leave here work in the office, so I've never seen some of them...

We had this one woman who left, right cow who nobody liked. Her card and collection mustered 4 signatures and 43p when they did the office rounds, I kid you not. So embarrassing. Three of us had to spend half an hour faking signatures with different coloured pens and sticking a tenner in each to make it look vaguely respectable.

another reason not to give money...

if you take a collection for a card at most you need 4 or 5 people to give a buck/a pound

then if you really like them or you get more money.. get a gift card to a bookstore for 20

Nobody ever seems to leave our place for another job, unless made redundant(which happens alot in the boom and bust steel industry) cos the wages are the best in the area.. Ofcourse men retire(women are sadly lacking in our workplace) with 70k lumpers and 15-20k per anum pensions once they reach the magic 55,depending on length of service...

The only lad who left on his own account as a young man(27)and a friend of mine still, left to be a fireman and took a big pay cut, because thats what he wanted to be...This lad tried to take advantage of voluntary redundancy and was in line to pick up about 12G's redundo..However a fuckin jobsworth manager told him he'd have to work his 3 months notice, like he was paying him out of his own pocket! Anyway,Stewy had to start his new job in 1 month so left with nothing..Needless to say we had a good whip round for him,cos he's a good lad!
