Most overrated band of all time?

I don't know if this has been done before, but...

Ah, so many to choose from...The Eagles, Led Zepplin, Pearl Jam (sorry Jack!), Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, Nirvana. I'm not saying all these bands suck, just that they're overrated. Either commercial or critical success that I don't quite understand.
For me, I think it comes down to Aerosmith or Led Zepplin. I will choose Led Zepplin. I had a friend in college who insisted they were more influential than the Beatles, for chrissake. He was even sober at the time...I think.

how can you have pearl jam down as OVER rated? :wtf:

compared to NIRVANA they get completely overshadowed. for me the most over rated band IS nirvana.

you don't understand pearl jam's critical and commercial success?

ten outsold nevermind yes, but after that every album has sold less and less.

there is no way on EARTH that pearl jam are over rated.

fucking nirvana are, and i don't get it.

but of course you are forgetting the NUMBER 1 OVER RATED BAND OF ALL TIME.

shellshocker, i don't think the "i don't see what all the fuss is about" arguement makes a band overrated. I wouldn't considr any of the bands on your list overrated, I guess its just a matter of personal opinion. In which case, Meatloaf, and Queen get my votes.

I'll cast my vote for Coldplay.

We could have a field day here - our lists would change as often as these music mags keep bringing out their best ever top 50 albums / bands/ singles of all time lists!!

For now I'd nominate U2 first and foremost, then old perennial faves like Led Zep, the Floyd, Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Who, Cream, The Sex Pistols, The Clash, then more recent ones like Radiohead (even though I like them), Nirvana (ditto), The Stone Roses (I dig 'em but let's be fair shall we? Only one decent album and that's it!), The Smiths (Lorraine will love me more for saying this), and then newer contenders such as The Strokes, The Killers, White Stripes, Coldplay, Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand.....oh god, it goes on....

Anyway - what about Joy Division??? :evil4: :evil4: :evil4: :evil4:  :shades:

Overrated is when a great fuss is made over a band that's not really all that good. By saying "I don't see what all the fuss is about" I am saying that I consider them overrated. In my opinion they are overrated. And this is of course an opinion poll, as any measure of overratedness must be.

As I said, sorry Jack, I knew that would piss you off. Anyway, they are a very big deal here in the states. Commercially, yes, but even moreso critically. The music critics really kiss the arses of Pearl Jam. Maybe because they try to be socially conscious. I don't know. Anyway, I personally don't think they're all that great. Maybe I'm just sick of hearing about them. Yeah, you're right about Nirvana. They are probably more overrated than Pearl Jam. Having your lead singer kill himself at a young age will help with that.

Also, the Arctic Monkey are ZERO here in the states. I'd never heard of them till a reference on this site a couple of weeks ago about Crouch's dancing. I think maybe 10 people in the whole of the US have heard of the Arctic Monkeys, and 9 of them are immigrants.

Yeah, Coldplay are a good choice, too, but they haven't been that long. If people are still making a big deal aboput them in 5 years. they will move up on my list.

Yeah but the NME is different now, they seem to have so much influence at the moment. It seems as though any band they single out to promote instantly becomes the new 'in' thing without any question. Whatever NME says is cool becomes cool. The Bravery are a perfect example of this and then the NME turned on them and now they're ridiculed. (I realise this is not always the case and plenty bands are popular simply because they're good)

THINK THE PROBLEM WITH REM IS YES THEY ARE A BIT OVERATED BUT THEY DO HAVE A SOLID COLLECTION OF SOME DAMN GOOD SONGS.

AND AS FOR BLOC PARTY I STILL THINK THEY HAVE SOMETHING, NEVER HERAD A SOME WITH THE LYRIC "YOUVE CRIED ENOUGH THIS LIFETIME MY BELOVED POLAR BEAR" IM NO LOUIE WALSH BUT I WOULD HAVE SIGNED THEM FIRST LISTEN!

I'll cast my vote for Oasis as the most overrated band of all time.

And, to defend Jack's position, I don't consider Pearl Jam overrated--not really a big fan, but its not like they were ever critic's darlings anywhere. Besides, even though I'm not a fan, its impossible to deny PJ's talent. They just have yet to record anything that's really impressed me.

Other overrated bands/performers: the Eagles, Bruce Springsteen, Fiona Apple, Jewell, and Sarah Mclaughlin (the latter three of whom were secretly cloned in a factory in South Korea).

I like all those bands bar the Kaiser Chiefs. One band that most people seem to love but I don't have much time for are the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Well, Ten, Vs., and Vitalogy were all huge, huge albums when they came out. Ten sold over 12 million copies in the US. That's pretty huge. Pearl Jam are very successful commercially and reasonably successful critically. Not that I hate them, but they got huge amounts of radio play and video play back here in the mid 1990's, which also turned me off. Yes, they do have have many good critical reviews, though perhaps not quite commensurate with their commercial success. I also recently read a flowing review of them in my Newsweek (among others) a couple of months ago in relation to their new album. I think part of the reason critics do pay them more mind is because they do take strong social stands, which is fine by me.
I prefer the other Seattle bands, to be honest. Most of Pearl Jam's stuff is too slow, though Corduroy is a good tune. Anyway, I never said they suck or anything, just that I don't agree with their huge success.

And yeah, I agree with your other bands listed.

There's no way they changed the music world for good, they just spawned a generation of angsty teenagers wearing smiley hoodies and playing carbon copy grunge; I don't know anyone can find that good. The music press cannonised Cobain the moment he died (they do that with any dead rock star really) but I just saw him for what he was, a not particularly talented junkie who penned the most self-pitying music I've ever heard (and I'm a Morrissey fan, at least he makes it funny).

I just found Nirvana very boring and still do, if they'd continued it's not like they would've ever evolved beyond grunge. Look at Dave Grohl, he's still musically living in 1994 just with a shorter haircut

I used to feel the same way about Dylan, could'nt figure out what any of the fuss was about.

Then I heard "blood on the tracks" which quickly became one of my top ten favorite albums ever. it has a vibe like none of his others that came before it, and its a deeply emotional record with 0 political ramblings. I recommend everyone check it out and you might be pleasently suprised.

I think they're considered rap.

I think the whole Seattle movement was important to music today (at least American Music). As for Nirvana, I think they deserve alot of credit, but not as much as everyone gives them. Nevermind is the #1 album of alltime on so many lists. . .What I think is ridiculous is how, just before KC offed himself, In Utero had come out and the public didn't really care for it that much. Once he killed himself, then everyone was buying his albums.

As for Pearl Jam, I think they are more important then they get credit for. Someone earlier mentioned how their album sales dropped off. . .it wasn't due to loss of popularity. They simply didn't tour and promote as much because they were in a personal fight with ticketmaster in Congress (which I give them alot of credit for, as they were doing it unselfishly for their fans, so they could charge LESS for their concerts and Ticketmaster wouldn't allow it). They fronted the attack on Ticketmaster, and while they were busy doing that, others stole their sound, and flooded the airwaves with pearl-esque sounds. By the time they returned to the radio, their sound was old, because of all the other bands copying them. I listened to Yeild, which I can say has to be their second best album, and is brillant, but I can't listen to it since the sound has been played out by so many other bands.

Some of the others that are mentioned are because they sound run of the mill today, but many of these bands changed the course of music for the time period they came from. Joy Division is a perfect example. Give their cd to a normal kid today and I guarentee that they won't understand what the fuss is about. Does that mean JD is overrated? Hell no, as they made quite an impact on the music.

Te question isn't whether we like the music or not, but how much did it change music today, and are they getting the due accolades for it?

With that I would say Neil Diamond, The Bravery, AC/DC, Guns n' Roses, Journey are a few.

OK I'll get off the soap box now.

I think it's far too easy to slag on bands you hate as being "overrated" simply because they recycle previously great innovations from a pioneering forefather whose early demise ensured his own legacy would be forgotten so long as those that came after him watered down the essential grit and turned it into easy-listening claptrap that everyone in America bought into.

But enough about the Eagles ripping off Gram Parsons :evil4:

Let's be brave and list those overrated bands that you happen to like...and let's be fair, every band or artist that attains a certain amount of popularity starts to believe their own press, so it's no disrespect to hold their feet to the fire. Might help cleanse the collective memory of rock. So my candidates:

The Beatles - for Sgt. Pepper, the fact that "everyone loves them" but can barely name more than ten songs (and none of the obscure album tracks), the fact that every band that has followed has had "-mania!" attached by some overzealous journalist looking to score cred points, and the bizarre solo careers (Macca, you magnificent bastard!)

The Clash - For trying to continue after Mick Jones' forced exit, turning the freedom that punk initially offered into a certain three-chord style that other bands imitate ad nauseum on college-rock stations today (nevermind the fact that they embraced black soul and reggae, nobody thinks of that side anymore when they think of "punk" and the Clash have some blame in that).

REM - For their major-label work (not quite as invigorating as the IRS Records material), for being the poster-boys of alternative long after they were embraced by the mainstream, for the "Shiny Happy People" mess.

The Doors - For riding Jim Morrison's corpse into a misbegotten legacy that could see the former singer of the Cult try to fill the Lizard King's pants, for the mythology surrounding what was basically a second-rate poet and first-rate drunk, and for "Light My Fire" being used at some point in every single movie ever set in the 1960s, about the 1960s, or with any bearing whatsoever to the 1960s.

Belle and Sebastian - For their "fey" early recordings, which diehards cling to in the wake of their inspired turn towards mainstream pop (get over it, it's all about artistic growth).

Sex Pistols - For putting out one album before imploding, building up Sid Vicious into an idol when he was basically a hanger-on that got lucky.

The Kinks - For everything that came between Lola and Come Dancing (a bit harsh, but needed saying)

Gram Parsons - for the aforementioned cliched early death, turning to hardcore country in his solo career after blending rock and country in his work with the International Submarine Band and the Byrds, and for being basically someone that only music snobs know of :D

Eric Clapton - For going from a brilliant sideman with various groups (the Yardbirds, Cream, Bluesbreakers, Derek and the Dominoes) to an uninspring and AOR-friendly solo career :nonono:

err nevermind was a huge worldwide hit album not long after it was released, there were thousands of kids mourning his death & huge coverage of it. you could easily apply your argument which conveniently overlooks how popular they were at the time he died & leading up to it to joy division a lot more succesfully.

right, so they were just as popular but nobody bought the albums. how can you say they were just as popular then? what are you measuring that with? surely the best yardstick of popularity of any artist is sales.

NOOLigan, the more "elite" a band sounds, the more "overrated" they are. I'm not being a snob. I'm honing on my musical tastes from my rock class.

just how do you define an elite sound?

I meant "elite" as sarcasm. Teen and emo bands are so easy to make money. Not to mention that they sound corny with the musical arrangement and the lyrics. A teen girl will buy records instantly, then later she will say "I didn't know any better." Teen brains are so impressionable. A true elite sound (no sarcasm) breaks boundaries as I have discovered in my rock class. Didn't think Beatles were that great until I listened to samples from Revolver, White Album, and Sgt. Pepper. How about the Grateful Dead and Pink Floyd. They're also ace. The teen market does not know how to be innovative. They just add fluff to everything that you know that's not how life works. Rock is reality, NOOLigan.

So, in other words, an elite sound should be something deep and profound. It's just that teen bands think that they are so great. Not to mention they experience easy profit from record sales. Popularity in this genre is cheap, I tell you.

There's nothing wrong with that NOOLigan. NO has defined a new genre, a new way of looking music. The bands that teen girls listen to can hardly be perceived the same way.

Someone mentioning Phish reminded me of the Grateful Dead. I'll never understand that obsession. They had one, mediocre, song, and people following them all over the country for like 30 years. :confused2: :confused2:

another vote for Grateful Dead... the only demographic who seems to actually love the Grateful Dead are boring to middle aged middle class to rich mainstream heterosexual white americans, and a few "deadheads" who were from rich families but become bums to "live the life"... they actually 'dance' to this boring middle-aged white guy extended "jamming"... over 30 white guy jamming bands are something to be ignored...

I don't think I've ever read a rock critic who really liked the Grateful Dead all that much either, so there isn't much of a music geek angle also ... its all just about the "lifestyle image" in the end

...U2 is just so overhyped by the media, largely because there is no else to fill that space in modern times since the music industry have changed, Bono is just so irritating anyway it is so easy to dismiss him

Should I be embarassed that I rather like Green Day? Perhaps they aren't as omnipresent over here. Surely the Eagles can't be over-rated - on account of the fact that nobody has said anything positive about them since 1976? Which means they are in fact about correctly rated.
