I don't know if this has been done before, but...

Ah, so many to choose from...The Eagles, Led Zepplin, Pearl Jam (sorry Jack!), Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, Nirvana. I'm not saying all these bands suck, just that they're overrated. Either commercial or critical success that I don't quite understand.
For me, I think it comes down to Aerosmith or Led Zepplin. I will choose Led Zepplin. I had a friend in college who insisted they were more influential than the Beatles, for chrissake. He was even sober at the time...I think.

how can you have pearl jam down as OVER rated? :wtf:

compared to NIRVANA they get completely overshadowed. for me the most over rated band IS nirvana.

you don't understand pearl jam's critical and commercial success?

ten outsold nevermind yes, but after that every album has sold less and less.

there is no way on EARTH that pearl jam are over rated.

fucking nirvana are, and i don't get it.

but of course you are forgetting the NUMBER 1 OVER RATED BAND OF ALL TIME.

ARCTIC FUCKING MONKEYS

shellshocker, i don't think the "i don't see what all the fuss is about" arguement makes a band overrated. I wouldn't considr any of the bands on your list overrated, I guess its just a matter of personal opinion. In which case, Meatloaf, and Queen get my votes.

I'll cast my vote for Coldplay.

We could have a field day here - our lists would change as often as these music mags keep bringing out their best ever top 50 albums / bands/ singles of all time lists!!

For now I'd nominate U2 first and foremost, then old perennial faves like Led Zep, the Floyd, Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Who, Cream, The Sex Pistols, The Clash, then more recent ones like Radiohead (even though I like them), Nirvana (ditto), The Stone Roses (I dig 'em but let's be fair shall we? Only one decent album and that's it!), The Smiths (Lorraine will love me more for saying this), and then newer contenders such as The Strokes, The Killers, White Stripes, Coldplay, Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand.....oh god, it goes on....

Anyway - what about Joy Division??? :evil4: :evil4: :evil4: :evil4:  :shades:

Overrated is when a great fuss is made over a band that's not really all that good. By saying "I don't see what all the fuss is about" I am saying that I consider them overrated. In my opinion they are overrated. And this is of course an opinion poll, as any measure of overratedness must be.

As I said, sorry Jack, I knew that would piss you off. Anyway, they are a very big deal here in the states. Commercially, yes, but even moreso critically. The music critics really kiss the arses of Pearl Jam. Maybe because they try to be socially conscious. I don't know. Anyway, I personally don't think they're all that great. Maybe I'm just sick of hearing about them. Yeah, you're right about Nirvana. They are probably more overrated than Pearl Jam. Having your lead singer kill himself at a young age will help with that.

Also, the Arctic Monkey are ZERO here in the states. I'd never heard of them till a reference on this site a couple of weeks ago about Crouch's dancing. I think maybe 10 people in the whole of the US have heard of the Arctic Monkeys, and 9 of them are immigrants.

Yeah, Coldplay are a good choice, too, but they haven't been that long. If people are still making a big deal aboput them in 5 years. they will move up on my list.

Yeah but the NME is different now, they seem to have so much influence at the moment. It seems as though any band they single out to promote instantly becomes the new 'in' thing without any question. Whatever NME says is cool becomes cool. The Bravery are a perfect example of this and then the NME turned on them and now they're ridiculed. (I realise this is not always the case and plenty bands are popular simply because they're good)

Also:

Razorlight, Libertines, Babyshambles, Bloc Party, Kasabian, Kaiser Chiefs (these last three just second rate Britpop really), And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead.....
