RIP Crazy guy apparantly.a mate has lent me his biography which I've yet to read,as it goes. How did he meet his end?
Don't know yet - it's on the 'tickertape' thing at the top of the BBC website news page.

That biography is hilarious. Apparently, it wasn't the vast amounts of industrial-strength acid that messed up his poor addled bonce.
It was Guinness.

Syd was one of my heroes! I love his music with The Floyd and i'm a great fan of his three solo albums.I've just read the news .Really bad news, even if we didn't expect something more from him. RIP. How can we die of diabete today ????

A sad occasion, but to be fair I thought he might've passed years ago. That's how reclusive he'd been since around '75 or so (when he crashed the Wish You Were Here sessions).

Got a stack of reading,not sure if or when I'll get round to it,and when my mate will want it back is something aswell..But he says the same about the book,though he left out the Guinness part!
RIP. Just heard of Pink Floyd's songs in my rock and roll class on Friday. Heard Flaming, and the one song with the intro of an astronaut making a transmission and the sound of a wind-up toy at the end. Don't know if it is Flaming or a different song. God, I just went over Syd Barrett a few days back.
Matthew Ashman was my my all-time guitar hero.Bow Wow Wow were a fanastic band,as were the Cheifs of Relief.

Flaming is on Piper at the Gates of Dawn, the only album with Syd before his collapse into insanity (there are some songs of his on the second album, but after that he was no longer with the band.
That is eerie about you covering Syd right before his death...hopefully you don't discuss NO anytime soon

Miss the man, as I loved his music. Hate to hear the news. The Wall was one of my favorite movies/video, so amazing to put emotion into music and sight.

When I was thirteen, I spent far too much time sat in a wooden block floored room on the sea. Generally if memory can be trusted it was howling a gale outside while myself and my best friend fought his two dogs into a lockable room so we could record. Throw a couple of terrible damp and dull sounding microphones in front of wooden guitars, a fantastically outoftune piano and various stupid and awful sounding percusssion stuff and evenings went south. In between the aforementioned attempts at recording we listened to records. Dusty, pockmarked, wine soaked, tattered, hissing, tornpaper sleeved records. Ridiculous prog rock records, the white noise, a heros grand folly (which at the time seemed pure "avantgarde" wonder) space tones for DJs, the beatles, who I had never knowingly heard, Captain Beefheart, who I had, the betaband, who made wood sound interesting after the MC5 and Stooges had made it boring, the who, who I loudly proclaimed far superior to the damn beatles (wrong indeed) and on and tiredly on. We mainly listened to three records though. piper at the gates of dawn, The Madcap Laughs and Barrett. At first it was maybe just the fact that he looked cool as. Best guitar ever (circular mirrored tele was all I wanted for years and years), great barnet, fine strides and shirt combos every time. More importantly it was the echoes and the tape machines, and the fact he sounded like himself and no one else and had the honesty to put it all on tape. For yr own sakes, never write him off as just an acid casualty, a sixties relic, a hippy wastrel or "that bloke from the floyd". The Pink Floyd were fuckin awful the minute he left...and the remaining members all know it. The look of fear everytime his name comes up because he was the only artist to ever grace one of their records..... However I truly feel for the fact that their friend departed, for that and the fact they endevoured to support him with what he was owed is a grand thing. Screw gushes, be damned embarrassment and stifle self consciousness: Roger "Syd" Barrett was one of my heroes, the bloke who made me want to cover guitars in echoes, someone who made records which I still love and listen to (tokyo soundtracked by PATGOD is a wonder) and someone who I am truly glad walked away when it got too much and hopefully found some peace and happiness after being in a silly rawkanroll band. Cue the inevitable pokes, jabs, barbs and snide asides. Quiet down, a hero passed away, give a minute one begs of you. godspeed sir x
