RIP Syd Barrett

Heard Flaming, and the one song with the intro of an astronaut making a transmission and the sound of a wind-up toy at the end. Don't know if it is Flaming or a different song. God, I just went over Syd Barrett a few days back.

The 'astronaut transmission' song sounds like Astronomy Domine from Piper at the Gates of Dawn. They played a truly superb version of it on an arty farty programme back in '67 and were interviewed by a music professor who complained "Why does it all have to be so loud" in a thick German accent...has to be seen to be believed. One of the top 3 'bands on tv' moments imho...

Former Blur guitarist Graham Coxon released a statement saying: "Lost him again... for bang on 20 years Syd led me to better places."

"From my agape 17-year-old first listen to Bike to, just the other day, Jugband Blues.

"Languished in his noise... dreamt in his night... stared at his eyes for answers..."

No. She died a few years back. It was his sister looking after him.

RIP Syd. The Piper at the Gates of Dawn is a classic I always still play. I had a vivid dream 2 weeks ago that he was dead and woke up wondering if he was out of curiousity. I then did a google search on him and realized he was alive and saw photos of him and wondered why I had such a dream.

Thanks Chris. Any word on when/where a service is being held? Never been a "huge" Floyd fan, but more intrigued with their history. What a career...

yes ,indeed! as u say :"what a career".And even if i much prefer their earliest albums( from The Piper to The WAll)than the last ones,i'll always consider the band as one of the best rock bands of the sixties and the seventies. With or Without Barrett. I'm still a Barrett Huge fan ,listening very often to his solo albums and sometimes playing his songs.He was great. History will remind him for sure. His private life,on the other hand, can be seen as a kind of a disaster.

The service is going to be (or was - not sure if it's already happened) a private family only one i.e. none of the Floyd to attend.
