geeks: rechargable battery advice

So I've got this new phone which is a fucking whore on battery life.

When I first got it, I had it charging for 12 hours before using it, and went off on a full charge to work. By the time I left work, it was on 2 bars. From very little use. It's supposed to have 8 hours talk time 16 idle.

I know that you should wait until the battery is dead so you get better future life out of it, but if I left work on 2 bars I'd not have made it to my next job or home for the rest of the night. So I gave it an hour's charge which brought it to 100%

I mean, I know this can give my problems later on, but is it worth having a phone at all if it's going to be dead in my purse because I don't charge it while it's dead?

Should I really wait until it's on one bar or dead or does it sound like the phone is that big of a battery whore that I should charge it whenever it's "low"? So that I can actually USE it.

I think I might buy a new battery from T-mo...to see if maybe I was just shipped a bad one.

Dunno if it's any use to you now but I always charge a new battery for 24 hours on the first charge. That way I know I'll get the best result from it. I know some say charge for blah blah blah and no longer than blah blah blah.....But I've never had one explode....yet

Don't they sell some kind of gadget that's supposed to extend battery life. I don't know much about it since I've never had a problem myself, but it seems like I have a vague recollection of seeing such a thing in a store just a few months ago.
