Peter Brock dies in accident

Peter Brock 'killed in crash' Racing legend Peter Brock ... reported killed. Motor racing champion Peter Brock has reportedly been killed in an accident in Western Australia. A car competing in the Targa West rally crashed into a tree at Gidgegannup about 30 kilometres north-east of Perth about 12pm, a Western Australia police spokesman told smh.com.au.

The car was carrying two people and one had died in the crash, he said. The major crash investigation unit was at the scene, he said. Ambulances were not called. The spokesman could not confirm the driver was Mr Brock, although that is being broadcast on Sky News.

Winning at the Bathurst 1000 in 1972, 1975, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1982, 1983, 1984 and 1987 - That's an amazing 9 times!!!

I have met him a couple of times. He always had time for his fans. He was a hero of mine. His death affects me far more than that of Steve Irwin.

Shit man. another Oz legend gone. remember him well from that Bathurst race.

Astonishing the number of racing drivers who die because road cars suck....I believe the Porche 911 holds the record for most F1 drivers masacred.

Sounds like it was kinda quick for him anyway, mercifully.

Couldn't believe it when I heard it at work today. There will be plenty of Holden fans in mourning this weekend. I'm sure he was respected by all racing fans though.

I had a Holden Torana when i was there years ago. Lime green. Jesus. Cost me $200. no key either. just a wing nut starter. maginificent motor. used to leave the windows open all the time, but nothing ever got robbed. the back seat was mainly just black tape.

I think some of what GG said had some credence but she was way out of line - you don't slag off someone who has just died like that.

I think more people in Oz would be upset over Brock than Irwin.

especially rev heads from the 80's in working class areas of Sydney like Liverpool, Parramatta and Blacktown. That Bathurst race was an obsession for a lot of people.

God, the old Toranas. My dad had one that he kept in superb condition. Little did he know that we used to take it up "parking" to Windy Point (Adelaide's lover's lane). :D

oh, and when that packed in. I upgraded to a tan Chrysler Centura. the petrol needle didn't work, but my meagre $10 petrol was well calculated and i never ran out of petrol.

OMG - Ted Bulpitt!! That program was hilarious. Remember he had the aboriginal statue called Neville, and of course the Kingswood. And Bruno his son in law "Leave your money on the fridge, wog". and "pickle me grandmother". Unfortunately the guy who played Ted died earlier this year I think.

glory days. but for me his best moment was in 1986 when in an underdone car for the first time under group A he almost won Bathurst facing might of European touring car technology and drivers.

he was great, very approachable.

Some of them get a bit big for their boots. You've obviously got some good memories then.

Interesting note For quite a while he made a very good living turning ordinary Holden (GM)V8s into something quite special. This all came unstuck in 1987 when he insisted on the advice of his guru to fit a device known as an energy polariser to his cars. The polariser consisted of now more than a few crystals and wires and was supposed to make cars so fitted more economical and drive smoother by aligning atoms or something like that. Holden would not approve any cars so fitted. Bock and Holden parted company. Brock even drove a ford for a season only to return as a driver only a little later to the general's fold, the specialised Holden marked now being supplied by HSW with Tom Walkinshaw input.

Was up close near the bloke once while waiting in the immigration line at LAX in 2000 having just come in from Sydney. Funny story. He was there with his wife in line just in front of me. Some bloke yells out, "Brockyyyy!!! Legeeeeend!" Brocky gives a big thumbs up and "thanks mate" looks to his wife with a grin and a wink, she just shakes her head....
