They're on Jools Holland's "Later" as I type. Along with Pet Shop Boys (minus Johnny Marr), Cornershop, and Doves. John Simm (from 24hr PP) is also there- presumably to chat about his role in said film.

Anyway, back to the subject of this thread: just what is all the fuss about this sprawling morass of talentless hideously-dressed ragamuffin garage-gangsta shit-peddlars?? Completely overshadowed by their legendary...um... "spats" and number of firearm-related convictions both in and outside their gigs.....(oh, wow! Like I'm so impressed!!) their "music" has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. No melody, no style, no substance, no soul (ESPECIALLY NO SOUL - considering they supposed to be "the language of the streets!" - ha ha ha what a joke!), and no bollocks even! To me they just sound like a bunch of outlaws squabbling over the remains of their fucking KFC carry-outs.... you-got-more-fries-than-me-muthafukka !! / hey-screw-you-too-bitch-rapin-cocksukka-!! /....21 seconds-to-cook-your-goose !! / Better-listen-up-homo-make-you-lick-ma-juice..!!!.. What bulging steaming sacks of shit!!

Does anybody here actually like this kind of crap at all? Does anybody "get" them? The jury's out then, I think.....

Nope - they are indeed a bunch of talentless fuckwits - they NEARLY make The Shitehouse Family look good:evil4:

You should be EXTREMELY pleased Jeff me ole mucker, I can't describe how shite they really are. 20 or so teenagers from Lahndan - pretending to be Americans - singing about a ghetto life - carrying guns and beating up 15 year old girls! WANKERS

...Only 20-or-so Shuggy? At the last count their ranks swelled by another 50 or so.....there's some serious inbreeding going on there - fook me, this time next week there'll me so many of them we'll have to reclaim a whole swathe of land from the North Sea just to build a ghetto so we can accommodate the bastards and their hell-spawn.....not a pleasant prospect... :nonono:

I didn't watch Later but I've heard a few of So Solid Crew's tracks and saw them on the Brit Awards and I absolutely hated what I heard. Their music is at best unremarkable but their lyrics are shocking (in the "very poor" sense as well as the "likely to cause offence" sense) and the vocals are just as bad. They aren't even exciting - their lyrical obsession violence is a money-spinning gimmick first used by N.W.A, generations of stupid people with large amounts of money have wasted it on fast cars and flash clothes and their music is hardly ground-breaking (can anyone remember "speed garage" from a few years ago? UK garage is pretty similar). Sadly enough stupid people have fallen for the Crew's gimmicks to give them a foothold in the music scene.

As for their number one hit "21 Seconds", did any of the MC's actually say anything of any interest or importance in their time on the mic? I'm no MC but I'm sure I could put 21 seconds of airtime to much better use than any of the no-marks in the "Crew".

(To be rapped over So Solid Crew's most popular track)

He's got nine months in prison to go He's got nine months in prison to go He had a Yardie gun He got caught and got done He's got nine months in prison to go Get banged up twenty hours, God oh no Then buggered in the showers, God oh no He's had a string of hits But he's as thick as shit He's got nine months in prison to go No mobile just a payphone, God oh no A long queue just to phone home, God oh no But you behave that way And that's the price you pay He's got nine months in prison to go

Seems to me that, for starters, their name is pretty dodgy. So Solid? If they were So Solid, then they wouldn't have at advertise themselves as such.

Thankfully, I have managed to avoid their music, and I just skim the articles I find on them in the British music monthlies.

Their SO SOLID moniker obviously hints at how hard their shit is, obviously.

So hard in fact, that no wonder we've got trouble trying to flush the fookers down the pan back to where they obviously crawled up from.

Street - talk? Street - tough?? MY ARSE!!! :finger: :finger: :finger: :finger: :finger: :finger: :finger:

Fooking slimeballs.....

Here's another verse (it's not as funny but it may help to explain the Crew's obsession with violence)

I'm a victim of fame, my defence Jealous people's threats made me tense Statements supplied by friends in the biz Helped to hide where the real story is It's all to do with my pirate station Competition turned to aggravation The truth is out there - just watch the news The unnamed haters are rival crews They cut their rates, frustrate our sales guys We grass them up to the DTI In that business a firm is a gang And the best ones back that up with some bang

Unoriginal pirate material - This is the sound of the heaps

You've got their records haven't you??? COME ON...OUT WITH IT!! LET'S HAVE THE TRUTH!!

No I have not got any So Solid Crew records!!! I have visited their website where I found the lyrics to some of their tracks including "21 Seconds" (from which I copied the rhyme scheme). When you read them on the screen they look even more stupid than they sound when you hear them on radio or TV.

Whilst I don't like So Solid Crew I can recommend "Original Pirate Material" by The Streets. Musically it's great but lyrically it's brilliant, especially "The Irony Of It All" and "Don't Mug Yourself". My best summary of the album is that Mike Skinner is a younger, trendier version of Jarvis Cocker circa "Different Class".

A trendy Jarvis Cocker - now that IS scary:evil4:

Okay, you're off the hook!! ;) Talking of SSC websites, I'm frankly gobsmacked that someone (doubt it'd be any of the band though) is equipped with sufficient intelligence to actually create a website devoted to this shower - and a readable one at that.

Is it liberally sprinkled with unintelligable street-talk and expletives by any chance?? :D :D

"Liberally sprinkled" is an understatement. It's all Sarf London gangster crap and the amount of filler put in just to make it scan is incredible. They like to think that they are top MC's but they're not. Chilli Gonzales is a great MC. Rakim is a great MC. None of the Crew are great MC's.

I can't remember the website address but you should be able to find it quite easily. If you do visit the website and read the lyrics have the lyrics to Public Enemy's "It's Takes A Nation..." album to hand so you can compare and contrast.

I've only heard a couple of Gonzales tracks but both were class. "Take Me To Broadway" is excellent. I downloaded the other ("Futuristic Aint Shit To Me") for free from the Kitty-Yo Records website (I think it's at www.kitty-yo.com and if I remember rightly there is another of his tracks available) and it includes the lines "Being futuristic means loving worms, saving your sperm, wearing your pubes in a perm". He is a fantastic MC and has an incredible imagination.

Anyway, it's nearly 2:30a.m. here so it's bedtime. Good night!

Yeah....nighty night.....and don't have nightmares about unmusically incoherent street urchins pressin their faces to your windows whilst trying to talk tough and dirty with their filthy hoes hangin off their cocks.... :)

Laughing Martian, here are some things I've found out about So Solid Crew that may interest you.

If you go to the website sosolidcrew.co.uk at the top of the page are two one-word links (something like "Chat" and "Forums"). The rest of the page is taken up with sad banner ads for garage acts' websites, mobile garage DJs ("Wedding? Gig? Rave?") or general garage websites (one has an animation of a woman with her knickers peeled down shaking her backside). A few window ads for shop websites also pop up.

If you go to the official So Solid Crew website at www.sosolid.co.uk it has some of the features you'll find on this site (news, lyrics, pictures and forums - if you click on the "Dates" link you get a page listing band members' PAs at clubs in November, December and January). In amongst these fan-related links there is a link called "Ringtones". If you click on that you are given information on mobile phone ringtones and logos you can buy by calling premium rate phone lines (£1 or £1.50 per min, calls last two or three minutes). There are also ads on some of the fan-related pages (such as the pictures page) and window ads pop up on some pages.

I won't bore you by re-telling the well-documented story of the Factory empire which many of you probably know better than me but the Hacienda, the Dry Bar and, arguably in its later years, Factory Records itself were built up on the back of New Order's success and the collapse of the businesses nearly destroyed New Order. With So Solid Crew the relationship is the other way round - the band is part of a business empire that started with a pirate radio station and now includes websites. So Solid Crew hasn't been created to make music or put forward ideas - the band is simply another way to make money, one of the few things that can clearly be made out from their lyrics.

So Solid Crew are one of the most innovative and interesting bands around at the moment. Their shows are breathtaking and their music is inspirational! Open your narrow minds boys and embrace the fact! :p

Muffy, So Solid Crew aren't a band - they're a brand.

That's okay, everyone's entitled to their own opinion of them, but to me they are just so contrived. I cannot be convinced by any facet of their existence, other than that to create a sensation. And WHAT a sensation too - you've got to hand it to them..... but I don't like them so that's my final word on them. I love all types of music, so I don't consider myself narrow minded at all - but two things put me off straight away and will always automatically colour my judgement on how I appreciate a band. They are:

  1. Hype (see The Strokes)
  2. Sensation! Outrage! Tabloid Inches!! Daytime News Bulletin Fodder!!!

Because of this, the music comes secondary and, sadly in the case of So Solid Crew, their music has no impact at all, after the initial blast of braggadaccio [sic] and rhetoric. Unlike, say, Public Enemy (often assumed to be their mentors as regards the notion of a whole collaborative/collective set-up) , who have harnessed this same ethic largely without compromising their integrity or sound. (Did THEY ever get hyped up in the ridiculous way SSC did? Of course not).
