Obama for President?

He is the best candidate, but he won't get it because of the Hilary factor. She's got it in the bag by virtue of her position, and while I think Obama would be the best potential president, I doubt he'll get closer to it than maybe a VP position should Hilary win. And there's some questions about that.

I know when he finished his speech at the '04 convention, I wished that he was running instead of Kerry. His moment may have passed already

Either way, I have little faith that the American people will wake up in time to realize how fucked-up we are because of the GOP (who probably have procedures in place for just such an occurance if they suddenly did realize what a shitty mess we're in thanks to Dubya and his cronies)

I voted Yes. America should have diversity in the White House. Plus, I hope that he will be a model for world peace. I like the fact that he takes the time to travel to Africa. We don't have enough politicians who would go to Third World countries to see how bad social and economic conditions could get, and provide ways to help.

OK, sorry for bringing up the race issue. But we do need diversity in the Oval Office.

I don't care what race Obama is, he has the "taint" of being a Democrat, which in certain parts of this country is more than enough to render him unsupportable. It's a fucking shame, but let's call it what it is: right now it's the Repubs' ballgame, and unless the American people wake up to how royally screwed we are after six years of George W., it's not going to change. Of course, I might be more pessimistic than most as I live in one of the archtypical "red states", but I guarentee you it will take a lot for a Democrat to win the White House in the next twenty years.

On the other hand, I think neoconservatism is foundering on the shores of the Iraq War, I wouldn't be surprised if political activism of a leftward turn doesn't experience an upsurge in the next decade or so. People at some point will begin to get fed up with the giant cockup going on in DC, and they're not just going to go about twiddling their thumbs and waiting for Hilary to make her bid (which I think would be a disaster, by the way. I know she has no broad appeal across the country, that's a fact). Right now, Young Republicans have a grip on campuses everywhere, spouting their bullshit while proudly displaying their "WWJD" armbands. But at some point, college kids will figure out when they're being lied to.

So Obama might never get a shot, but someone else will come along to mobilize the resistance to the GOP's "with us or against us" stance.

i like obama... it's just that how many black or non-white u.s. presidents has there been... zilch... i actually thought that colin powell would have become a great president, and he is 100% african american (of jamaican ancestry)... the thing of it is that the united states has many years (possibly decades) before they will elect a president of an non-anglo saxon descent... which is a shame...

You can do Oscar: choose one nonwhite president once and then don't get one elected for a century without accusations of being a racist. Or better: two in one - a nonwhite female president the same way.

Economic mess???? Home ownership is at an all time high, and the economy has recovery (maybe not fully) from the high tech crash of 2000. Granted the war has put more deficite fromthe government, but it also stimulates economic growth. It isn't the highest point in American economy, but it isn't a mess.

And dems would tax air if they could.

Why does the Democratic Party like him? Because he's the perfect token! He's a black guy who "doesn't act black". It doesn't make them feel uncomfortable. If they close their eyes they can pretend he's white and then they get to play to all the lipservice they spout about social justice.
