Never used Ubuntu, so I have NO idea what it's like. Seriously....get a copy of knoppix First and play about with it with no effort and no risk ( and not much speed either, tho if you have stupid amounts of RAM it can be tolerable).
is this slowly becoming a linux thread?
Well it WAS lying around doing fuck all
Well suchbeing the case....why does anyone f*** with Linux in the first place? Other than to get away from giant Microsoft, ofcourse. Granted Windows hogs the CPU, but other than a few games, never needed more CPU (and even then I go into device manager and turn off alot of crap).
So what is the deal anyways?......
......or is it just a right of passage into geekdom, like trekki ears and the planet Hoth in its original box?![]()

The big deal is (for me) reliability. The linux box never crashes for me, the layout is awesome, the games are v. cool, and it's not too vulnerable to viruses and crap if you know what you're doing and how to set it up.
That being said, you have to know what you're doing in order to set it up so either learn it the hard way (i.e., do it yourself on a box that you have delegated to be the linux box and read some linux lit) or have a linux friend set it up for you.... installation can be tricky otherwise.

sounds like i may require some assistance with the installation.
i'll deffo read the lit first.

Seriously, I love linux.
Love is the only word for it.
Another example of why cropped up today.......
Been playing Solitaire on the win2k Boxen in work, when there's fuck all better to do, and doing nothing at all would lead to passing out in yer chair,(usually about 5am). So on Win2k you get 1 game of bog standard patience with one deck of cards ( on our version anyway). I was bored spineless today waiting on a dvd test encode getting far enough for me to check audio sync meaningfully, and I though.....hmmmm Solitaire (although that's a dumb ass yankism, the game's called feckin patience). So sure enough, KDE comes up trumps with "Kpatience" asone of it's 500 or so Kdefault Kprograms Kwith Kthat Knaming Kscheme. I fired it up.
There's 26 different variations of patience, including clock patience, and other bizarre ones, you can also choose from 8 different decks of cards with 15 or so different backings.
I don't understand why Yous Yanks don;t go for it EN MASSE for the sheer freedom of choice aspect.
Good question. Perhaps it's the installation that scares 'em?
It's not 100% user friendly for setup....yet.
ah bugger. I don't want to frak up my home computer. So it isn't just a matter of loading it up.
Easy does it then.
I kinda saw Linux once and didn't SEEM that impressive. Now I am by no means any authority, so I could be talking out my @$$ on that. It seems similar tothe firefox craze. I don't see much difference with firefox over explorer, and used it for a month...seemed more a craze to get away from ms.
This was the initial impression, and PLEASE correct me if I'm way off-base on this: -More stable, but mainly because viruses are being made to attack windows more often than linux, so theortically, if everyone switched over the linux it would start having major virus issues. -not all software programs are made to work with linux....at least not in a 'plug n play' type of way. -Uses less cpu, but also has less flair to it, and cute little buttons and crap. -A pain in the ass to setup.
Is this the deal?![]()

at this point Cambo will usually say something like, "if you like pretty pictures, then stay with windows".
LOL Like I know any different. I am willing to give it a go though.
