Just had a look on HMV.
Dexys, UK Subs, Soft Cell, The Specials, Strawberry Switchblade.
Nothing exciting then...

Only thing is, does anyone remember skinheads in 1983? Weren't the norm were they? A dying breed, surely?
Just discussing this with a lad at work and surely the whole genre had just about died a death in 1981 with the demise of the Specials? Defo all washed up by the time Madness took House of Fun to no.1 in 1982. Before that though just about every kid in school was a skin. Had a female mate get preggers in 1983 by a much older skin who'd left school and we thought he was a right neanderthal throwback at that time. Though, of course, you wouldn't say that to his face, cos he seemed about 9ft tall and had homemade NF tattoos! Oh, and was 17 years old. So dead mature, natch.
I don't remember Skins full stop.
none were i lived. the odd punk, goth etc. but never any skins. especially kids. that's just ridiculous.

I'd have said it was a 79-81 thing, and that's about it. Well, at least, the type of skins I presume they're talking about in the film: that whole 2-Tone/Ska thing is what I remember.
Certainly can't remember any of the skins from first time around (was that early 70's, not sure?)

Liverpool is probably the skinhead (by definition) capital of England anyway. prob 95% of lads near me have skinhead hair cuts. number one all over. even the nippers.
its just that the uniform has changed. instead of Crombies its Lacoste trackies.

Fairs fair Kershy, Liverpool has got the worst dress sense. I mean, fellas in their 30's wearing full Lacoste tracksuits? Come on. And as i've mentioned countless times all that fake stanley dock stuff.
It amazes me that scousers believe that Prada, Boss & Armani ALL make exactly the same shellsuit and put their logo in the same place!
No wonder Wade Smith went out of business!

A colleague was showing off Philadelphia to her future daughter-in-law a few years ago when the visitor looked around the Italian Market and came to the sort of realization that makes marketers a fortune.

And we've got the figures (literally) to prove it. I called John Fetto, of Simmons research in New York, asking him to pull some purchasing data for the largest U.S. media markets and found that, indeed, people bought more sweats last year in this metropolitan area, per capita, than in any other place in the country.

Al - it's based on Shane Meadows' youthful upbringing in UTTOXETER. It's just outside Stoke, and it's a town which will forever be about 15 years behind the rest of the world!
Hence, it's probably quite authentic!

Ian McCullogh's Ex Lorraine worked for them as a buyer. Don't know what she's up to now, since Ian traded her in for a much younger model.
I remember loads of skinheads in the early eighties, but it had gone a bit underground by then. I was into Scooters (vespas, lambrettas) at the time and there was a lot of 'scooter-skins' around. Musically it was mostly ska, trojan reggae and Northern Soul.

Dont really see as many Lacoste trackies now, well still loads more than anywhere else, but not as many as maybe 5-10 years ago.
The scallies all wear that North Face stuff now - dont think the designers had the streets of Liverpool in mind when they were making it though
Watched this tonight, really really good film and would recomend it to all.
Cracking soundtrack as well. The young lad was really good and the rest of the cast, espescially the lad who played Combo (his name escapes me) were excellent an all.
Trip down memory lane, espescially the fashion and sounds!

God Wade Smith.
It used to be okay-ish up until it became obsessed with selling Lacoste/sportswear and If ever there was a store which ripped people off with over priced s***e labelled as 'designer' casual wear then that was it. I think it's final death knell was when people realised they could get much better stuff 50% cheaper than Wade Smith at Cheshire Oaks and with the met quarter and forthcoming developments in and around Paradise Street who needs Wade Smith now anyway. I'm based in London now so I don't really know what constitutes scouse fashion these days but like what Papa Bendi mentioned I've noticed the 'Lacoste' thing is a lot less popular now than what it was 5 or so years ago and actually it's the 'plackie scousers' in Warrington/Runcorn/St Helens/Wigan etc. and even in some parts of Manchester who seem to be into that skinhead/trackie look just as much as in Liverpool. Still it could be worse it could be the London 'street'/Hip Hop look of Hoodies and gawdy Avirex jackets - not a good look no matter who wears it! The film looks good and I hope to try and catch it if I can

Wasn't really about Skins, or certainly Skinhead Culture, was it? Could've been any bunch of youngsters in the mid-80's, and the problems they encountered. Oh, except for the 'skinheads are racists' stereotyping.
Think the young lad deserves the plaudits (he is son of Keith Chegwin though, isn't he!) but all the best action seemed to centre around Combo - that lad seemed to have way too many issues, none of which were eventually addressed satisfactorily by this film.

above is about right, I was a skinhead from late 79 till mid 81 SKA, Suzuki FS1e's & Cortina 1600e era. A place in Birmingham called Nelson House was the best place for clobber and a disco at community centres was always SKA themed with different gangs usually kicking off.
