Help me name my new computer

Ever since HAL9000 went pop, and I stuffed his innerds into SAL9000's chasis, I've had a schizoid computer. 5 hard drives and all the PCI cards from both boxes, plus a killer video card I scored on ebay for 50 bills (the existing radeon, was fine for games in windows, but revolting for video playback in any OS, particularly Linux).

Well I'm sick as bollox of....

want to play a game reboot>windows want to burn cd reboot>linux want to play with cubase reboot>windows want to read email reboot>linux

and so on

The Cpu of my new machine arrives tomorrow, and assuming I have not done terrible damage to the motherboard during a typically hamfisted installation, the machine will take it's first breath tomorrow evening. Which gives me a problem...

What do I call it? It must have a hostname! (or two if I choose as this machine will be dual boot with linux too, but only as a backup in case the existing HAL/SAL hybrid throws a hissy fit)

Any ideas? I ususally call them after great computers from sci fi....hence HAL9000 SAL9000 Orac, Deep Thought have all been variously used, and one of my usb sticks with a working linux on it is called "minivac", a pint for anyone who spots that reference.

Asus M2N32-WS-Pro motherboard Athlonb 64 X2 5600+ @2.8GHz 2GB low latency Geil Ram Just a 320 GB Hitachi HD to be getting on with (class drives BTW) Tomorrow it will have a borrowed GeForce 6200 LE/TC....a piece of unmitigated shite, but it'll get a picture on the screen and give me a chance to get the machine ready to receive, next week.... GeForce 8800GTS (o/c version, 575Mhz core) Motherboard supports 8GB of RAM, Athlon FX CPU's and is one of VERY few that will let 2 Nvidia cards run in SLI mode with both still at full 16X bandwidth (most boards drop both cards to half speed, therefor negating all advantage). It also has capacity for 10X SATA and 4X IDE-PATA drives. So plenty of options for keeping it current.

Recent Asus AMD boards are great, dunno about their Intel ones as I've never had one. This one is the only one I could find with true SLI 2X16 performance.

Two VERY good suggestions there, in the form of Melinda (Priceless JT ) and FAC9000.

Bro suggests, HAL9001 for it's linux persona and SAL9001 for DOS-XP (and maybe a tripple boot with DOS-Vista too, just to see the performance drop first hand.) Sounds too confusing to me.

This house has 4 desktops, 2 laptops, a fileserver and a router(ie an old compaq deskpro running Linux from a floppy disk) all on the same network, so they all need memorable host names, and I am a firm believer in not giving dogs bad names.

All computers have host names you know, ALL of them, mine are just better.

Besides, as Jesus said, the geeks will inherit the Earth.

So far it's a toss up between Melinda and FAC9000 (maybe even both since it will have at least two different operating systems on it and there is no need for both to share a hostname, in fact it can be better to have separate ones to keep any exported filesystems clearly understandable to other machines.

My laptop's called Montgomery or Monty for short... Cos at times it's a terrible cnut...

It's the first time I bought anything but el-cheapo kit, especially the video card (200 fucking quid!!!), and I've done what I can to build in upgradability so that I don't have to start on a new one for at lest 3 or 4 years (my last one was bought in summer 04 so it did OK, still going. The previous one was autumn 02, that's the one that passed on a few weeks ago (all it's bits have gone to allow other machines to continue to live with a better quality of life....Bless). All in all, by the time I put another HD, SATA DVDRW,2GB of memory and a few small bits and bobs, it'll have stung me nearly 900 bills (not being able to out much has sort of provided it's own treatment there ;) ), and this from a guy who says you can build a real beast for £500-600 (you can of course, but I felt the need for a real bastard of a system this time.

ten times the machine you'll get from PC world for twice the cash, and it will work right.

If you can handle one of those kids puzzle balls with the holes and the different shapes to fit through them, you can build your own! (installing and getting windows to work properly is another story, one I am once again at the beginning of...SIGH)

Anyway, FAC9000 it is.

I cracked and bought my "proper" vid card on ebay, a pound cheaper and it'll get here 2-5 days earlier, depending on if it's too big for normal post (no parcel post on Saturday and no post at all this monday).

Right now I'm downloading a new Gentoo Linux install CD, cos all the versions I have are for 32 bit. It'll be good to see the machine run in full 64bit mode (XP just isn't, and XP64 while better, is woefully incompatible with, errrm everything), as well as seeing the dual core being handled correctly by the kernel's syncronous multi-penguins system (it's really called that, and if you boot a multicore kernel on a single CPU you get told "single processor detected, Multiple penguins slaughtered"...and people wonder why I prefer it to DOS-XP LOL).

I installed gentoo on a simillar tho slightly slower system for a cow orker last summer and it terrified me. Gentoo compiles every single program and library just for your machine, on a reasonable (1Ghz, half a gig of mem) machine that can take 36 hours from blank disc to full desktop OS (still less time than it takes to beat windows into submission), but with 5600 bogomips (Linus Torvalds sarcastic cpu bench measure, since all such measures are utterly bogus, his being slihghlt more accurate by reducing the heisenberg effect by measuring how many times a second the CPU can do fuck all) and 2GB of 800MHZ Ram, it like......

Install this please Certainly (I pop off to get coffee, wondering what I'll watch on the other machine while this enormous application+any other crap it needs, gets built) (I return 4 mins later to read) OK and am suddenly stuck and stumped about what to install next.

Can't WAIT to use Beryl on it (youtube for "Beryl Vista" and sit down...I first seen it under the heading "Attn Vista, Linux is eating your luunch", after seeing the video, and installing it, it's also pissing in vista's bed, sleeping with it's girlfriend and using it's credit card at Tiffany's), as even though all other aspects are glass smooth without even registering on either the video card or processor of my old machine, it cannot quite keep full motion video going in a window while you fling the desktop around like a madman.

then when I'm all happy I'll install vista, enough to depress anyone. Installing it tripple boot, XP,Gentoo,Vista.

In honour of it's Sunshine bestowed name, it's desktop wallpaper is simply a black screen with a small factory "F" in the middle, saville would love it ;)

The HAL 9000 series machines, installed with female personalities were designated "SAL" despite this not being at all related to the origin of HAL (Heuristically ALgorythmic....and NOT as some speculate, because it's one letter ahead of I B M).

So, one serving a New Order fan, should be given the designation FAC9000. Especially after I think of some good Hooky noises for startup and shutdown samples.
