Ever since HAL9000 went pop, and I stuffed his innerds into SAL9000's chasis, I've had a schizoid computer. 5 hard drives and all the PCI cards from both boxes, plus a killer video card I scored on ebay for 50 bills (the existing radeon, was fine for games in windows, but revolting for video playback in any OS, particularly Linux).
Well I'm sick as bollox of....
want to play a game reboot>windows want to burn cd reboot>linux want to play with cubase reboot>windows want to read email reboot>linux
and so on
The Cpu of my new machine arrives tomorrow, and assuming I have not done terrible damage to the motherboard during a typically hamfisted installation, the machine will take it's first breath tomorrow evening. Which gives me a problem...
What do I call it? It must have a hostname! (or two if I choose as this machine will be dual boot with linux too, but only as a backup in case the existing HAL/SAL hybrid throws a hissy fit)
Any ideas? I ususally call them after great computers from sci fi....hence HAL9000 SAL9000 Orac, Deep Thought have all been variously used, and one of my usb sticks with a working linux on it is called "minivac", a pint for anyone who spots that reference.

Asus M2N32-WS-Pro motherboard Athlonb 64 X2 5600+ @2.8GHz 2GB low latency Geil Ram Just a 320 GB Hitachi HD to be getting on with (class drives BTW) Tomorrow it will have a borrowed GeForce 6200 LE/TC....a piece of unmitigated shite, but it'll get a picture on the screen and give me a chance to get the machine ready to receive, next week.... GeForce 8800GTS (o/c version, 575Mhz core) Motherboard supports 8GB of RAM, Athlon FX CPU's and is one of VERY few that will let 2 Nvidia cards run in SLI mode with both still at full 16X bandwidth (most boards drop both cards to half speed, therefor negating all advantage). It also has capacity for 10X SATA and 4X IDE-PATA drives. So plenty of options for keeping it current.
