How fast was he going? You know it really is amazing that people can not just survive, but immediately walk away from these accidents....I mean the G-Force alone has got to damage the brain, or at least you'd think so....

They wear a device that stops the head from swaying about too much in a high speed crash and the cars are designed to fall apart to dissipate energy. That said, if a piece of debris had hit him in the head, he would have been buggered

Yes, reports now suggest his injuries have been downgraded from 'broken leg' to 'sprained ankle'...!

The Head And Neck Safety (HANS) device was actually developed in the USA (shocking, I know, but the yanks DO contribute to world motorsport a little). When they tried to mandate it in the winston cup (Nascar), Dale Earnhardt said "over my dead body". four months later, while attempting to cheat to aid his son, he was slammed into the wall, and died from the exact brain stem extenstion injury the HANS is designed to prevent. It was mandated from the following race. Seeing Kubica's head flail around like that yesterday....he'd have been stone dead had the Hans not towed his upper body along with it.

The FIA's crash test program earned every single penny spent on it yesterday, that was an astounding amount of energy.

I hope nothing happens this Tuesday. Last time a driver lived through certain death was Lucciano Burti, Belgium, Sept 9th 2001. (I mention that because there is a freak tradition of disaster following escapes, usually befalling the driver themselves, many of whom died in simple road bumps or other accidents within days of walking away from something they ought not to have).

PS, Kubica didn't walk away from this one, he was out cold, thank $DEITY for the fuel bladders, he coulda ended up like Berger in 89, unconscious in an inferno.....til a crazt Italian marshall dragged him out.

Will Sid clear Kubica to race at Indy next week I wonder?? Will he want to face walls again.

One other note..... The Engine of an F1 car IS it's chassis.........

The monocoque safety cell at the front, bolts to the engine with no other supporting members, the engine in turn bolts to the gearbox and back wheels.

What's almost as amazing as RK's lack of death, is that NEITHER of the joins separated as is usually rhe case. The wheels and gearbox fuck off one way, and/or the engine heads of straight ahead and the monocoque goes airborne. It has, admittedly, been quite a while since we had a good carbuster of a shunt, but I recall seeing a 2 peice car in the last year and a 3 piece not much longer ago.

Backed it into the wall at 90-100ish....boom...bits of renault everywhere,****** wing gone, brake cooling cheating bastard plates ejected, the lot. Driving back to the pits he says on radio..... "I touched the wall, Think I have a rear puncture".

We laughed. Martin Brundle laughed. He commented, much as I had..... "you;re in for a shock when you get out and look".

BUT.....apart from the wing, and the hub-cover-cheat-brake-thing......the only damage HAD been a puncture, and he was back out in 4 mins!!!!!!!!!!

I always said they should build them tougher to promotoe racing, nobody will get wheel to wheel if a tiny knock makes the wheels all point different ways.

But the brain is floating in fluid in the skull, image there has to be jarring around within the skull that has to have some sort of residual after effects....

They can get bruising of the brain yes, but since they are racing drivers it's not really an issue.

As for "motor sports" a massive workforce, with lots of highly skilled members, work their arses off so an exorbitantly costly car can endlessly circle a track, while guzzling up a vanishing supply of a hard won fossil fuel.

While meantime, 5 Million children a year die because they have no clean drinking water. 5 Million it's a hard number to get your head round: it's equivalent to a fully loaded jumbo jet of children, crashing every 35 minutes, non-stop, night and day, year after year. Another 9/11 every 6.8 hours. But we don't see, or hear, these 300 kids dying every 35mins on the news, instead we see and hear who's won the latest "Grand Prix", or any other distraction.

Besides for every penny spent on F1 in the UK, £1000's are spent on underwriting the arms debts of the leaders responsible for most of those toasted kiddies.

Oh and a GP car gets 4-5MPG, that's more than most US road cars that struggle to hit 55MPH, and five times more than a hummer.....you know, the thing that's used for vital missions like taking 15 drunk whores in a hen night.

While so many children are dying for the lack of water, or clean safe water, I really couldn't give a flying fuck about any of this stuff, all of it can (could've) wait (waited) until we start treating the whole of humanity with dignity and respect, while we waste resources on sport etc, how many children could we save if we wanted?
