(...who wasn't at that time a member of the fall)

Just idly wondering, apropos of nothing, other than I was listening to the 50,000 fall fans compilation, and read somewhere recently the great ray of sunshine himself expressing disgust at being lumped in with any other manchester band (seemed particularly horrified at being in any way associated with the buzzcocks). I remember his reaction to being asked if he'd influenced Sonic Youth ('a man could lose sleep over that, being held responsible for Sonic Youth'), not to mention his not exactly flattering descriptions of the ever-lengthening list of ex-Fall band members (something about a bunch of old men he was having to drag round with him? Or Marc Riley 'achieving his life long ambition to be a minor celebrity'). So as a sort of quiz challenge, is there any record of him saying something positive about anyone who wasn't at the time he said it a member of the Fall?

I mean he doesn't even seem to like his own fans very much.

(I'm sure if he cheered up and wrote some sunny happy songs he'd have more success in the hit parade)

I saw The Fall playing at 'The Fez' in Reading and he certainly complimented their support band - 'Heartwear Process'. Must admit, I thought that Heartwear Process were better than The Fall - amazing performance and some really weird and wonderful songs.

If you want to see what they're like, try here:

Heartwear Process

They're quite like my mates, The Cardiacs - strange but really grow on you. Their EP is brilliant.

No, not 'tinned luncheon meat'

Mr Smith was right when he reluctantly commented that they were 'Bloody good'.

I've never heard him be anything other than grouchy about everything. Saw him in London about a month ago, getting off a bus and heading straight for the pub. Some things never change.

He described rap music as "the most literate music around at the minute" on a Snub TV interview. Word.

Now there's an oxymoron:

I think he one said Morrissey was probably HIV positive. Does that count?

Sure he's said a couple of positive things, I was watching that BBC4 documentary yesterday and MES seemed to be impressed by the fact that Bo Diddley liked the band.

Oh, just remembered....the scan I did for MES's review of a Krokus album of a page from the old Flexipop magazine, which I sent to the "unofficial" Fall site. Not sure how much he's taking the piss, but he didn't trash whatever album he was assigned to review. Unlike the singer of Krokus trying to come to grips with Hex Enduction Hour!

MES did say positive about Gary Numan when The Fall were in South Chicago in 1992 and he went to a few clubs and all the black guys with machine guns worship Numan, Snoop Doggy Dogg sampled his stuff.

Marks Greatest Interview Hits

Following the chain of links from that link, just read the interview with Loaded (never read it 'cos I've never read that mag). It's hilarious in a ghastly car-crash kind of way. It's a good job one that technology means one can listen to someone's music without ever having to meet them, that's all I can say. Funny the bloke from Ash's accent turns more Northern Irish when he's being threatening - I suppose there's a heirarchy of menacing accents and NI presumably trumps Salford.

I know this is a very naive question, but has anyone ever responded to one of his tirades by thumping him? Is he good in a scrap?

This article from The Guardian regarding ex members of The Fall is fantastic.

Stick that 'results reading' to music and you'd have the comedy hit of the year...

Wouldn't you be grumpy if you'd aged as badly as he did? :\ohwell:
