I'm not what you'd call thick, but my particular type of intelligence has GAPING gaps and vast blindspots......I present here for your amusement, the following conundrum, first told to me by my granny, now sadly (for us, she'll be having a ball wherever she exists now) departed......in all my years I've never fully bent my head round this, I've even resorted to computers and failed.
Obviously I've updated it a wee bit. the original being old sounding in the 70's.
Two sisters,Mary and Sadie go to their local branch of Dixons to get Sadie's granddaughter one of those mp3 player things. They spy a nice looking one for £30, and since Mary is sort of the wee girl's favourite great aunt, and since they're both poor pensioners, they decide to go halfers on it. Each of them stumps up the £15 and they depart with the player. As they leave the shop the manager approaches the sales gimp and says "did you charge them £30 for that? they were meant to be reduced this morning, you didn't update your till!!!!". In an act of kindness not normally asociated with this fool-from-cash-separation emporium, the manager orders the gimp to give chase and return overspent fiver to the auld dears.
The gimp scoops five pound coins into his sweaty paw and bolts out the door. Just before he catches the ladies, three pound coins slide out of his greasy mit and plop straight down a drain grating.
Being too lazy to go back, and thinking the old girls will never know any better, he runs on up to them and gives them a pound each, saying that it had been reduced by only £2.
The thing is..... this means they paid £15-£1=£14 each=£28
but £28+£3 down the drain=£31!!!!!!!!!
go figure.
(cept Nora, she'll probably know and give me an inferiority complex)
