and my guess is that you've never met anyone in or from the military... only watched it on tv from yer armchair.
NOTE : This has nothing against Edel. It is just what he said that I find interesting.
Note also, that I will also try to answer to Ian about militaries.
Just like Ian, I think that a professional army has to be made of people ready to do dirty jobs like killing. This is the reason they are given weapons, right ?
We can see a weapon under two different lights.
- Defensive weapon.
- Offensive weapon.
What can we say ? Both are intented to kill, to defend or to attack, but the final goal is to kill.
As you may have already noticed, I am a citizen of this little arrogant country which seats at the permanent council of the United Nations. And unlike in the two Western democracies which lead our ways, National Service was a duty until 1996. Lucky as I am, I did it in 1994.
My grandfather was very proud. Mind, he spent his life in the army. He has French medails (nothing special for a Frenchman), British medails (as he joined the Free French in England - still smokes Player's Navy Cut from time to time) and even an American one, yes Sir !
Well, by a morning of October, I found myself in barracks in the Alps. Burt, if you read this, the Laibach video made me laugh as I remembered how we enjoyed to sing this tune by this time...
Yes, I had a weapon in my hands. Yes I did things I find rather stupid because I was wearing an uniform.
Lucky as I am, I was in a High Montain Combat Company - not sexy as Marines, isn't it ? And it came a day when we were asked whether we wanted to go in Sarajevo or not. I said no. No, because as blue helmet, you have the rifle, but you cannot shoot the fascist doing his business in front of you. I say, in this case, and in this case only, I am ready to pull the trigger. Otherwise I hate guns. That is what I liked the less during this time : loving my famas like it was my wife. Bloody cunts !
As I refused, they wanted to get rid of me. But as I speak slavic languages, they could not sent me in a boring place where I could rest until the end of my duty. They sent to the Headquarters in Paris ! Bastards ! No, I am kidding, that was interesting. Like one colonel told me one day. "As you can see, we are between gentlemen here. This is not like in barracks, where most of the professionals are stupid cunts. I evaluate the amount of cunts at 80%. But we do really need them". What did I have to say ? And then he added. "When your cause is not worth it, don't think. In the army, thinking is already betraying. The only hope you've got is to serve an officer who is able to say no to an inhuman order."
