WOMAN OF THE YEAR - AMY WINEHOUSE
This has been Amy Winehouse’s year. She’s given us its biggest selling album, as well as a sell-out front page for every paper going. Still, as she said to Rolling Stone, her music is just part of what’s going on with Amy. Her personal life has become a public mess, but OMM discovers that no one can turn pain to their advantage quite like Amy.
And no one can turn a tragedy like Amy's year into a reason to celebrate quite like the dear old Observer.
Anyone who does think her music is any good (ie not me) would surely wish that she'd stop being such a lightweight and make a bit more of her art rather than falling all over the place like a drunken disgrace who can't take her drugs.
Turning up to a few of her gigs would be a nice way of thanking her fans, too.
I'd like to see what the Observer would make of someone away from the performing arts who is letting their addiction to drugs ruin their career in the way she has. I also feel sure they would treat any civilian couple who routinely knock each other about a bit differently.
She'd have been sacked from any other job in January and would have spent the year signing on and shoplifting.
