I recently imported 100's of songs from my bud's ipod. I thought it would be great but i can't figure out how to upload theses tunes into my itunes. Also, now recently downloaded mp3s will go into my itunes but than won;t transfer into my ipod.

the 100 songs must be in your hard-drive to be imported. you can not download music from an ipod to a computer, because apple does not provide that type of software. can only be done with some after market software not programmed by apple.

It's an uttercunt this. I've been through the same.
Not sure why you can't upload in the first instance from your itunes to your ipod but, as has been said, if you want to copy tracks from your mate's ipod back to yours somehow then apple don't provide any software. I use this - Copytrans - regularly to copy my ipod back to an external drive at home.
It's the one time that owning a Mac seems more attractive as there's a few freeware apps for Macs that do the same, but basically fuck-all for the PC at present.
Yup, been meaning to get that program (Copytrans) for a while now - it's a complete bastard that you can't copy from the iPod back to your PC, but I can semi-understand why Apple decided not to include that facility...
Also, if they're DRM tracks (i.e. purchased via iTunes), then you can't import them into your iPod (without a bit of trickery pokery)! :)
As to why your MP3 files can no longer be uploaded to your iPod, perhaps it's full? (Obvious question, but it has to be asked)!
A quick i-tunes question, some tracks I bought from there a while ago were on a hard drive that self destructed - how do I get them back? They show up in my 'purchase history', but there doesn't seem to be a way to re-download them into my library.

In theory, you should always backup your library to a seperate location (it keeps prompting you to do this - I always ignore it), but you could try what someone else on the web did:
"Since you lost your PC, any iTunes Music Store [ITMS] purchases (whether they made it onto iPod or not) may still be downloaded from Apple. Recently this worked for me in a similar situation.
First I used iTunes > Music Store > My Account to de-authorize (prevent) my purchased music from playing on all my old computers (upon which my Apple ID was used to authorize playback of same).
I then found ITMS Help contact info and composed a nice email that I lost everything in a typical tragic hard disk failure, that I'd just de-authorized all my old computers at once, that I replaced my computer, and asked if it is possible to re-download my Purchase History.
I immediately got a nice email from Apple ITMS that sympathized with my situation and detailed various methods for backing up my music to prevent another incident. The same email instructed me to select iTunes Menu > Advanced > Check for Purchases.
Here I found their one-time-only offer for me to re- download my entire purchase history, pre-paid.

First, it doesn't matter if these mp3s were bought or paid for.
Second, you can download the songs from your ipod into your computer, there are complications, but it can be done.
Go into iTunes and click the box that says 'use ipod as a hard drive'. After that has taken effect, you can go to 'my computer' and find the ipod. You will be able to copy/paste the music into anywhere on your computer.
There is a catch though. To keep people from stealing music, Apple has rearranged the music into a mess of folders and all the songs names have coded #s... it works all the same, but it will take sometime to reorganize them into thier proper folders by artist/album if you like it that way. You can play them all with other media types. Good news is, that the tags are the same, so if you directly read them in iTunes, they will all still make sense in the order of them all.
I recently purchased the 80 GB Classic and am disappointed. Ipods are like American cars, shit. They could be so much more if Apple wasn't try to fuck you all the time.

I've tried this before and the Vista Windows computer recognizes the Ipod Nano (2nd generation) as drive (J) but only shows three non music folders. Where is the music? What did i do wrong?
What problems am I having???
First, had to re-establish internet at my home just to get the software for the Ipod. Since ridding my self of interweb I go to bed on time, read books, ride my bicycle more and I managed to shed about 30 lbs. I do not like the fact that it needs to be sucking off the bitty of the mothership. That's a MicroSoft thing.
Second, after loading up 200 or so songs I decided to put more on. All sorts of error messages. I did the Apple mantra--restart, restore ect. No joy. Took the fooker back and they tried all the crap I did to no avail so I got a new one.
Third, it's a pain in the ass to load up bootlegs ect. Gotta relable and organize them in the thin Apple GooseStep way.
Fourth, need to get third party software if you want to "sync" songs from another computer.
Like I said, Ipods are to portable external HDs as American cars are to automobiles. Sure they do as they say they will but there is so much more they could do without being a pain in the ass. I wonder if people are building their own mp3 players. It cannot be that difficult these days.
BTW Wifey's Apple laptop was away for repairs for two months. She had it band spanking new for one month before it shitted out on her. So that is two Apple products that crapped out quickly on us. Think Different? Have you driven a Ford lately?

The folder is a hidden folder. In order to view hidden folders in Vista, you have to do the following:
Go to Control Panel - Appearance & Personalization Go to Folder Options - Show Hidden Files/Folders In the list Check the "Show Hidden Files/Folders" box and uncheck the "Hide Extensions For Known Files Types" Press Apply.
When you go into the iPod as a hard drive you'll see the hidden folder "iPod Control" and the music is in the "Music" folder.
Again, the music is in coded folders and songs from albums are distributed throughout these folders. A pain in the arse to reorganize for yourself, but iTunes will read it no problem.
For instance my folders a Named "F1" to "F49" and inside them are about 200 songs from all sorts of artists / folders. The files are also named with a four-letter code... good news is that the tags work well, and you can see the artist/album in the tag explination of the folder.

3 - You may have to relabel bootlegs, but a proper tag will be attached to them, and even if you move the files, they will be read properly by any program... you would have this issue in other programs as well, not just iTunes...
4 - I wouldn't 'sync' with another person's iTunes even if I was able to... that could cause too many issues if you have your music really organized.
You can always use your iPod as a HD. Cut/Paste music in there... granted you won't be able to play it right away... but you just need to add it to your iTunes library at home and yer good...
As for them breaking... well never had that issue. Even the best brands have items that break....
My PC decide to start ignoring my iPod last week. Right pain in the arse. Doesn't show in explorer, or in iTunes.
Have done everything to try and sort it. Switched USB ports, replaced the cables, reinstalled the software, restarted all services, etc, etc. Only thing left on the recommendation list from Apple is to actually reset the iPod itself, and there's no fcuking way I'm gonna do that.
Doesn't recognise Gemima's iPod either.
Just have to run mine off my office PC now instead.
Oh, and then I dropped the fcuker on Monday so I've got a black smudge inside the screen. 
Still, those new 160gb ones sure look purdy and I needed an excuse to get one!!

Resetting yer ipod won't do any damage to yer music or library. I personally would uninstall iTunes and reinstall it, then see if that works.
Just remember BEFORE uninstalling yer itunes, to go and save yer entire itunes library (the actual library, not the mp3s), which is under 'my documents'...'itunes'... don't ferget the folderr with all the album photos in there. Save it in a completely different place. After you reinstall itunes, replace the folder (as the install will put in a new blank library).
Resetting itunes or yer ipod won't change anything with yer music though, so no need to worry there.

My iPod is my main point of storage for all my tunes, playlists, etc. I just use the PC as a medium for uploading the iPod in the first instance, then use CopyTrans to copy it back to a separate hard-drive once in a while.
I need to find a PC to copy all my tunes back onto in the first instance!!! I'd chance my arm at work but I think they'd immediately spot a spare 70gb suddenly filling up with mp3's all of a sudden!
I simply don't see the attraction of an iPod over a non-proprietary mp3 player.
My Creative Zen M is easily as good as any iPod I've seen (It's even got a special 'anti-girl' interface) and there's none of these boring problems with transferring data (cos that's all music files are) backwards and forwards between any PC. Most of the time I don't bother, just synchronise with Media Playa on either of my PCs, or my sister's Apple laptop or anything else I plug it into. I even got it file sharing with my central heating boiler last week, but all it had on was Leonard Cohen.
In my opinion, Apple suck up to the music industry so that they can get special deals like the 'exclusive' iTunes Originals and U2 in their adverts.
How hilarious that once someone has bought and downloaded Apple 'exclusive' tracks, they can be shared quite freely by anyone APART from iPod owners!

Well there's yer problem, yer not suppose to do that. The iPod isn't meant to be main holder of yer tunes.....
By the way you are trying to plug in the iPod into the original computer you started with right?

The main issue I saw 3 years ago, when I bought mine was the differance in the software that organized the music. iTunes clearly was head and shoulders above any of the other operating software. I'm not sure if other software has caught up now...
Also, there are so much more accessories for the iPod than anything else. My favorite is the FM Transmittor that plays my iPod on any FM tuner, and best of all its run by the battery power of the iPod and can transmit over all the radios in my home, so I can have all the same music playing throughout the house.
You can get one of them for the Zen and have everyone else's music playing all over the house

Eh? That shouldn't be a problem at all. My iPod is my main holder of tunes, by my choice. I update iTunes from my iPod using CopyTrans. My PC is just a back-up as far as I'm concerned. All playcounts, etc, are dictated by my iPod, not by my PC - I never play music on my PC, it's just a portal to upload tuneage to my iPod.
And, yes, the PC is the original computer I started with. But it doesn't recognise my iPod anymore, nor indeed any other iPods. Don't have any issues whatsoever with any other PC's though.

Yes and no....
You can get the ones that fit for any mp3 player, and they are bulky and require wires... a bit of apin in the arse... plus those ones aren't that good...
at least no where as good as the PodFreq... extendable antenna, has a range of no other fm transimitter. Also serves as a nice case. I've tried out all the other FM Transmitters, and NONE of them can even come close to touching this thing for performance...
