Has Castro made the record for longest reign of a dictator that is not officially a king or queen that ascended by birthright? 50 years is a hella long time! He has to have the commie record. He lasted longer than Bobby Knight, Castro has the communist record, and now Castro is stepping aside like Knight and saying "fuck it, i'm outta here!" Somebody else pick up the pieces.

Maybe Castro is scared of a new world order led by Obama? That all Cuba will "jump ship" and become Americans?

I got a mixed reaction from my Cuban grandmother--

1] she's thrilled that el bastardo is stepping down;

however, 2] she's pissed that el otro hijo del puta is stepping in.

I honestly have to agree with her, considering she fled Cuba when Fidel rose to power.

But Obama wants to economically bridge a gap between the US and 'rogue' known-terrorist-aiding countries by giving them financial aide... this has been tried and failed in the past, but he thinks we can buy friends over there. Add that he wants to pull out of Iraq within two years, leaving a vacuum of government/order. Certianly a breeding ground for future trouble and financed through our aide.

So yes he could be worse than Bush.

Cuba is a beautiful place,went there on my hols last October with lady .

They dont have much but they make the best of a bad situation.

Havana is also very nice,only thing that lets it down are the beggars after money,on literally every corner.

Went to revolution square and was rather dissapointed,thought it would be massive,rather than a glorified carpark :\ohwell:

all I know about cuba is that they have a very high literacy rate

i know someone who has met castro.he was over in cuba in a delegation of the communist party to rise money for striking yorkshire miners. they got no money but castro gave him a big cuban cigar,which was nice of him

Actually I didn't blame the media.... though they do have some part in it... its politicians releasing all their skeletons and blaming it on the person everyone hates. No one challeges the claims, as everyone already hates them, leaving the other politicians squeaky clean.

Defenders of Castro like to point out healthcare standards, citing the number of doctors that Cuba sends out to other parts of the world, and literacy rates, which again is useless, because there's no point in being able to read if you're not allowed to read anything.

On the healthcare, the only area where Cuba stands out is in terms of Infant Mortality. Yes, it might have a large amount of doctors, but most of these are woefully unqualfied, which leaves lots of patients treated incorrectly or just not at all. The waiting list for operations in Cuba is ridiculously long. Also, there is a dangerous lack of Pharmaceuticals in the country. So its all bery well and good having all these doctors, but they dont have the tools to treat people properly.

asd for the economy, well thats simply propped up by foreign money. Every one I know who has been to Cuba has complained about the amount of Beggars. The whoe country just bows down to the almighty dollar, so much so they might as well just incorporate it into America.
