Groooverider In Jail For 4 Years!

As a young promoter making my way in the scene in '97 I booked a few of D&B's leading luminaries including Goldie, Doc Scott, Bukem, Aphrodite and a certain Ray Bingham aka Grooverider. I also had the pleasure of briging over some of Hip Hop's originators for the same "Elements" night including Grandmaster Flash, DJ Kool Herc and Afrikka Bambatta.

Of all of these talented individuals, Ray stood out as a true prince among men. On two ocassions (out of four) his records didn't make it from Heathrow to the show and he still went on, playing out of my warm-up DJ's bag to a totally loved up audience. He bit his tongue and just got on with it when several others ( that's you Goldie YOU CUNT) spat the dummy and refused to play. Never a nicer person will you meet in the D&B scene which has become known for the diva-esquie behaviuour of many of it's "stars".

I am truly saddened and distraught at what started out as something so trivial has now turned into a good man being deprived of his liberty for four years in a Middle Eastern jail. As I write there is still no formal online reaction to this in terms of a properly organised petition but I predict this will be organised within the next 24 hours and i would urge any right thinking individual to add their name to the list.

Fucking tragic.

In fairness, its Zero Tolerance over there. And if it was Singapore he'd be dead by now. He's got no one to blame but himself. "I forgot it was there" just isnt a valdi excuse anywhere.

Put in the position he's currently in he can be forgiven for trotting out some lame excuses. Sticking him in the jail however is wrong even if only from a purely humanitarian point of view, no debate.

Really fucking sad.

What on earth were you doing reading the Daily Mail? Even I dont go that far!

Lets see if we can have a guess which of the following actually buys the News Paper

They ought to give him another year simply for being so daft.

  • J.S., London, England

People caught with drugs at Dubai airport have to live with the consequences.

However, without drug culture modern sounds and visuals would never have evolved.

  • Andrew, Paris, France

Well done Dubai.

  • Chris Downing, Yorkshire

I think, yes it is an overreaction, but if you are going to any of these Islamic countries, you should be aware of the consequences. A bad example is, but the only one I can think of, is an American walking around openly carrying a gun around England, (or Scotland) and pleading ignorance because he's allowed to do it at home.

Certainly a bit harsh, but if you're travelling to those countries, you have to be incredibly dumb not to thoroughly check your bags and your clothes just in case. Either that, or you're trying to smuggle something... Just for 'personal use'.

Have you read the replies on that link? Fucking hell. Now I know why I've never picked up a copy of the Daily Mail.

Keep your friends close but keep your enemys closer..... I read the Daily Mail every day. Anyway, this story has been doing the rounds since GR got banged up in November last year. It's just that nobody, ABSOLUTELY NOBODY, thought it would lead us to where we are today.

I can't stress how much this has become so surreal and doiwnright unfair. I'm off to bed. Hoping it's all some kinda sick joke....

I wish we had laws like that in the UK.

Hate to say it, but that was quite idiotic to go traveling between countries and not even check yer pockets before going through.... four years maybe long for what we consider a misdomenor... but when traveling to the ME I'd be clenching my arsehole tight enough to make a diamond out a lump of coal....

It was in his trouser pocket.... maybe he did forget, if it was one of those pairs with a gazillion pockets

I always thought trying to find stuff in my handbag was a pain, til getting stuck in a queue behind some daft bugger who couldn't remember which pocket had his bloody card in.

if that is the case 4 years for having daft trousers sounds about right:p

Really sad news, had the pleasure of seeing Grooverider at Eclipse (or was it Fantazia?) in the very early 90's. Ma mind's a bit buggered cos of the substances that were being abused at that time  Happy days though.

As for you bringing over Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash etc... what are the chances of that being repeated? I have not long downloaded three or four cracking docs on early hip hop, if you want copies sent up, gies a shout. Would love to see an event with the pioneers :thumb:

Unbelievable. Truly appalling decision which makes me glad I live in this country.

All that for a solitary spliff in his pocket.

Fcuking hilarious that the Daily Mail readers are backing this sort of controversy. A British citizen locked up in an Ay-rab jail. Same sort of cunts who probably spend 90% of their day worrying about the Muslim Menace. Utter utter scum.

Anyways, I'm off to Dubai soon. It was nice knowing you all! :uhoh:

And what about the poor lad with Cannabis stuck to his shoe!

Chop their hands off!!!

Amazing. I'll be avoiding that region all together. Not just because of that you know. Dubai makes me think of a tiger being kept as a house cat. It might appear to be cuddly and cute, but it's still being run by corrupt quasi-religeous nutters.

I'd be interested to know the racial appearence of the people mentioned in the story, and how much money they had in the bank. Intolerant, severe laws are generally cover for otherwise inexcusable racism and elitism. I can't imagine that the authorities over there are too thrilled about a black drum and bass DJ entering the country at all.

My mate back in Toronto used to be his booking agent and mentioned that Grooverider (and Fabio) was one of best among his roster to work with as he never made "superstar dj" demands or complained when things went wrong

hope there will be an appeal..

I also wonder if other djs will start cancelling their Dubai bookings now..either to avoid any trouble themselves or gesture of solidarity for Grooverider

From that Mail report:

Earlier this month, another Briton was jailed to the same term after a tiny amount of cannabis was found in his shoe.

Youth development officer Keith Brown, 43, from the West Midlands" was found with 0.003g of the drug - an amount invisible to the naked eye.

WTF????

No-one fucking 'deserves' 4 years in a shit hole jail for having less than an eigth on them (clearly by accident)

A few spliffs worth and some porn (was it, or was it just FHM or something?) You could find that under pretty much every 17 year old boy's bed in the country!! I know it's the law in Dubai etc etc, but it doesnt make it any less fucking ridiculous

disgusting? he IS/WAS in a foreign land as a visitor. he can smoke all he wants OR do whatever fooking anything he pleases at home OR country, but for heaven's sake, REGARDLESS whether he is a "star" or not, obey the damn rules.

i guess, he's brain is in his ass!

typical as far as am concern. he should be responsible of his action and be a "man". he's just sorry he got caught, bottom line!

OK, so you break the law, you get punished and drugs and a whole multitude of countries are a real no-no, so the sensible thing to do would be ultra-careful but such a long sentence? Maybe he deserves no sympathy for being caught, but for the harshness of the sentence, you need to have at least a bit of compassion, no?

He's just sorry he got caught?! He had 2g's of cannabis on him! Are you a bit thick? He's hardly a fcuking drug smuggler, now is he? Or do you genuinely believe he actually set out to break the law of a foreign land on purpose.

Four years for ₤10 worth? Illegality notwithstanding, the sentence is not proportional to the offense.

If you're planning on going to Dubai, read this list carefully - if any prescription drugs contain that substances, that's 4 years...

Oh, and if you get ill over there, obviously none of these substances can be used for pain relief...

Well, "bloody foreigners, comin over here and doing their own thing, no regard for our laws", does that not work both ways? The good tax payers of the UAE lose out again paying for jail time for foreigner druggies.

I mean, obviously locking someone up for 2g is retarded, but then the UAE IS a retarded (ie religiously lead) state, and this is a well known fact that any traveller would be aware of. FFS if I was going to some medieval backwater like the UAE or USA, I'd hose myself down first incase there was a trace on my skin.

It's shite that he's been banged up at all for weed, truly pathetic. BUT, did he turn round to customs and say "oh I didn't realise you were a bunch of ignorant savages, I thought this was an enlightened modern state". If so he should take action against the travel agent who did not provide him with the standard travel advice (available to anyone who can read at www.fco.gov.uk and I'm sure that although he is a DJ, ONE of his friends MUST be able to read it to him).

Interestingly, not all laws are enforced with equal vigor in Dubai:

Prostitution, though illegal by law, is conspicuously present in the emirate because of an economy that is largely based on tourism and trade. Research conducted by the American Center for International Policy Studies (AMCIPS) found that Russian and Ethiopian women are the most common prostitutes, as well as women from some African countries, while Indian prostitutes are part of a well organized trans-Oceanic prostitution network.[44] A 2007 PBS documentary entitled Dubai: Night Secrets reported that prostitution in clubs is tolerated by authorities and many foreign women work there without being coerced, attracted by the money.

And then there's that whole "equality under the law" thing they've not quite got the hang of yet:

The city's "discriminatory" legal system and "unequal treatment of foreigners" has been brought to light by its alleged attempts to cover up information on the rape of Alexandre Robert, a 15 year old French-Swiss national, by three locals, one of whose HIV-positive status was hidden by the authorities for several months

That might be your point of view, but you haven't really stated a case anywhere, have you?

Why then, in that case, do you think drugs are so unacceptable ... so much so that a mere spliff's worth is worthy of four years imprisonment in your opinion?

I don't know the ins and outs of your own country's drug laws, but, like the UK, I don't suppose you'd get more than a caution for a spliff's worth of dope. Actually, I don't think it's even cautionable over here anymore due to downgrading, then even more downgrading.

Do you not at least think it slightly bizarre that people are getting imprisoned for being in possession of the likes of codeine for back ailments. Or are you just another accepting sheep who says, "Them's the rules, I didn't make them." Do you not question anything?

I have only had a quick look on Google, but apparently a British guy got the same (minumum sentance) in Dubai for having a dog end containing an amount invisible to the naked eye, stuck in the groove of his trainer sole! Which he could have, quite plausibly, picked up in the street. I dont know the ins and outs if it, but it does suggest that common sense isnt a factor in the Dubai legal system..

Just because it's the law there, doesnt excuse it. There have been oppressive laws throughout history, we dont look back at people who were hanged for theft and say "pff, well they broke the law, they desrerved it"

Winking at ladies is clearly another no-no in that part of the world.

"Backward lot" is a obviously bit of an understatement...

Some of the reader's comments in the Daily Mail article surely must be a joke? The cannabis on the shoe story even had a comment mentioning - shock horror - house prices :brow:

Surely the real question here is how does a "youth worker" from the West Midlands with a family to provide for, afford properties in two different countries and be able to afford to travel back and forth regularly. Is there a house price boom currently going on in Ethiopia? Or am I in the wrong job?

The fact that you can't even address the codeine point in a reasoned manner shows your IQ really. Cold smugness for the sake of it doesn't seem to be winning much agreement here.

In stark contrast to your replies, the whole reason that there has been such an outcry over these recent UAE convictions is due to the fact the authorities seem to be so far removed from employing any common sense or fairness in regards to the international travellers.

Let's face it, if "BillONdollar" had accidentally and without knowing stepped on a 0.05 gram of cannabis on his way into Dubai airport and thrown in jail for four years I doubt the smugness would be quite so strong then.

The blindingly obvious root of many people's outrage here is that the sentence is highly disproportionate to the crime. That and the fact it could feasibly happen to anyone - even if they aren't cannabis users and haven't done anything wrong.

What a muppet :nonono:

the only "thick, muppet or critin" here are "you people" that are defending and tolerating his actions. WHAT A JOKE!

it must be true what they say "birds of a feather, flock together"

when you travel to a foreign country, you have to be sensitive to their laws and culture, because it maybe greatly different than your own. THE END!

Where on earth is the 'logic' behind locking someone up for four years for a solitary spliff in their trouser pocket?

Please, explain that one.

Do you bang people in the US for four years for a similar crime? No, you don't. Or does that now make your country 'illogical'?

Perhaps you think your own country's drug laws are too lenient?

And common sense - which you plainly lack the way you appear to be actually crowing over another man's incarceration - would never allow anyone to be locked up in such a fashion for such a petty 'crime'. Fcuk me, you get less for manslaughter in most countries.

Am I the only person who thinks that, ironically, Billion Dollar's rather unpleasant stance on this might be softened if he was to have a wee smoke himself?

No, you're not the only one - he probably doesn't drink either, so the best you're going to get him to do is to drink a glass of water! :spit:

Sorry to drag up an old thread but this reminds me of a question that's been puzzling me for a wee while: why do people assume that if you're anti-drugs, you don't drink and/or are religious? Personally, I think using drugs is a very silly (not to mention pointless) thing to do and I worry about the health of people who choose to do them. However, I like a drink at the weekend and I hate religion. So why can't some people see that this kind of world view is possible? I don't get it.

Because alcohol is a drug, one far more toxic and debilitating than heroin.

Therefor, stating "I am anti-drugs" means either....

A. "I am against alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, paracetamol...." or B. "I'm an idiot and what I MEANT to say was "I think our country's lawmakers have made perfect decisions for me, regarding what is safe for me to ingest, and am therefor opposed to the use of all drugs deemed ilegal at this point in history""

The last person who tried to start a fight with you, or force his hand up yer jumper..... drunk or stoned?

EDIT: I think people assume such views imply a god delusion in the individual, because the same kind of logicless acceptance is required.

No-one's ever tried to start a fight with me, although I have seen people completely change personality (for the worse) when they're stoned. They stumble round the house giggling and disappear up themselves, not wanting to talk to anyone. For the record, the people in question are perfectly fine when they've been drinking, they just become exaggerated versions of their normal selves.

Another thing is that when you're drinking, you pretty much know what effect it's going to have on you and you can take steps to stop it, or at least limit the damage (e.g. by having water between boozy drinks, which is what I do). You can't do that with drugs; once they're in your system you can't stop what they're going to do to you. That's why I don't touch them; the way I see it, it's too risky. But that's just me, I guess.

EDIT: Funny you should mention god delusions; that's my favourite book! :)

Eh? That makes no sense whatsoever.

You drink. You know what effect it has on you.

You take drugs. You don't.

Surely, on either subject you only know what effect either has on you from personal experience.

I dont understand why you say using drugs is 'pointless', yet you say you use alcohol??

Surely both have, pretty much, the same purpose? To change your mood?

I don't drink or use drugs, and I still think Grooverider's sentence is a travesty. Yes, it's illegal to bring drugs into Dubai, and yes, he should have known. All that aside, the sentence is out of all proportion to the offense, and that is what's upset people posting here. I doubt there'd be any discussion here if the news had read simply "Grooverider ordered to pay £100 fine."

I take your point about "once it's in you, yer stuck with it", certainly true for E's and acid and shrooms, there's no getting back if you change your mind. But then, there is also no way to sober up, OOOOh people will tell you lots of coffee and so on, but tell that to the police when they stop you and you make the wrong light come on when you breath.

The thing is, that the legal status of drugs (and you seem to be basing good and bad on whether or not they're legal...ie taxable), is a manmade, temporary situation. 50 years ago, weed was legal in the UK. 30 years ago E was legal in the USA, you bought it at the local chemist (I always wondered why they call them drug stores), and got a little flight guide with it to suggest fun things to do whilst bolloxed).

BTW do you know the lethal dose of cannabis?

A 20KG block dropped on the head from 50ft.

I've always liked a smoke. Used to like a drink, but last night's the first time I've been blocked in 2 years. Partly cos all the meds have left my body in no state to cope with the stuff, but also, every really good bit of trouble I've gotten into, and every really reprehensible thing I've ever done, was while steamin. The moral of that tale is that alcohol is a bad drug, FOR ME. But it's good for you, so should I have it made illegal because of it's effects on me?

Actually in the last few years I have also found that medical weed smokers are not just trying it on. The painkillers I'm on (which are an opoid, and a controlled substance....why? not because they are dangerous...the typical lethal dose is 2-3g (40 to 60 tablets, which you wouldn't keep down anyway), whereas the lethal dose of paracetamol is considerably less than the amount contained in all but the smallest packs available in the paper shop, NOPE, it's a controlled substance cos you can get out of yer head on it...you think weed makes you insular? try 3 years of these bad boys)....anyway, the pills, as soon as they are down my throat, they're trying to crawl back out, but if I have a little smoke, it goes away in a flash, much as I have heard Chemo and AZT patients say it does. Obvious;y I can't get hammered in work, so very often if I need to take painkllers, I've got my head down the bog an hour later losing them again.

You live in Town and nobody's ever tried to start a fight with you??????????? I must just have "thump me" tatooed on me bonce.

Anyway, the point is, each to their own. Do what works for you, avoid what doesn't. Obviously that goes only as far as being a proper addict, be it a junkie or a wino, who fucks over everyone around them, then you're a dick and the sooner you OD or shit your liver out the better ;)

I don't do drugs and don't drink much, but I also think Dubai's drug policies are a bit mental.

More shocking than drug abuse, though, is"BilliONDollar"'s abuse of the English language. Ironically, he writes like someone on some particularly fine drugs.

(And his random capitalization lacks Rocket Mick's style and panache)

(If his first language isn't English, I retract the above).

It really depends on the drug. Cannibus and Marijuana shouldn't be illegal. I don't do them and have no desire to, but too much of the population does it regardless of the laws. So in essence the people say it shouldn't be illegal, but the government is making criminals out of them. We spend too much money on fighting this and its as pointless as prohibition.

That being said, hard drugs should be illegal. The type that decapitate one's life and make them useless hulks of flesh after their first hit and for their entire future. Not for moral reasons, but because they end up on welfare, we pay for their hospital bills, and they end up doing alot of crime to aquire said drugs.

People need to get off the moral standpoint and start looking at it from a cost-effective standpoint, then it starts to make all the sense in the world.

Bit naïve on some points there. I presume you're talking about H but shirley the 'hard' drugs in most widespread use (certainly in the Ukay) are ecstasy and cocaine. Neither of which 'decapitate one's life'. And you certainly don't end up on welfare or doing crime to acquire them. In fact didn't Elton John (spit) claim that cocaine was God's way of saying you've got too much money? Which is the bipolar opposite of what you're stating.

The fact is, Dubai has been in the process of reinventing itself as a tourist destination. However, not a tourist destination like, say, Amsterdam. But, one with distinctly upper class, Muslim-Arab sensibilities.

Hence, our intrepid traveler found himself in the tenuous position of being a black man in possesion of drugs.

I certainly don't agree with 4 frakking years for a couple of joints. He might get a ticket for that here. But, personal responsiblity has to start somewhere. Dude should have been aware of the lay of the land. That's why I don't so much as pack aspirin when I travel to Mexico. There are too many gringos in Mexican jails for the same or less than Mr. Grooverider had on him.

Crack, PCP, Herione, and the others that people become slaves to and wreaks havoc on the body's system. Cocaine would be on the limb as possibly being linked to these, because today it is for rich people, since it is illegal. Make it legal and the price goes down, making it accessable to the public.

Blimey! Must be dead rough where you live! :eek3:

What percentage of people take any of the aforementioned though? Crack? PCP? Heroine? Surely all very much minority drugs?

Compare that with the number of people who think nothing of doing the odd line or pill of a weekend. And who aren't bleeding the welfare system dry. Nor will doubtless ever do so as a result of doing charlie or an E.

Grooverider released from prison

Radio 1 DJ Grooverider has been released from prison in Dubai after serving 10 months for possessing drugs.

The DJ, whose real name is Raymond Bingham, was in the middle of a four-year sentence.

But he has been let out early after being pardoned by the Dubai Royal Family. He has flown back to the UK to spend time with family and friends.

The DJ was originally arrested on 23 November 2007 after being caught with 2.16 grams of cannabis at the airport.

At the time Bingham said the drugs were in the pocket of a pair of trousers and he had forgotten about them. He was handed a four year sentence in February.

Grooverider co-presented a weekend drum & bass show on the station.
