Well, "bloody foreigners, comin over here and doing their own thing, no regard for our laws", does that not work both ways? The good tax payers of the UAE lose out again paying for jail time for foreigner druggies.
I mean, obviously locking someone up for 2g is retarded, but then the UAE IS a retarded (ie religiously lead) state, and this is a well known fact that any traveller would be aware of. FFS if I was going to some medieval backwater like the UAE or USA, I'd hose myself down first incase there was a trace on my skin.
It's shite that he's been banged up at all for weed, truly pathetic. BUT, did he turn round to customs and say "oh I didn't realise you were a bunch of ignorant savages, I thought this was an enlightened modern state". If so he should take action against the travel agent who did not provide him with the standard travel advice (available to anyone who can read at www.fco.gov.uk and I'm sure that although he is a DJ, ONE of his friends MUST be able to read it to him).

I have only had a quick look on Google, but apparently a British guy got the same (minumum sentance) in Dubai for having a dog end containing an amount invisible to the naked eye, stuck in the groove of his trainer sole! Which he could have, quite plausibly, picked up in the street. I dont know the ins and outs if it, but it does suggest that common sense isnt a factor in the Dubai legal system..
Just because it's the law there, doesnt excuse it. There have been oppressive laws throughout history, we dont look back at people who were hanged for theft and say "pff, well they broke the law, they desrerved it"

Surely the real question here is how does a "youth worker" from the West Midlands with a family to provide for, afford properties in two different countries and be able to afford to travel back and forth regularly. The fact that you can't even address the codeine point in a reasoned manner shows your IQ really. Cold smugness for the sake of it doesn't seem to be winning much agreement here.
In stark contrast to your replies, the whole reason that there has been such an outcry over these recent UAE convictions is due to the fact the authorities seem to be so far removed from employing any common sense or fairness in regards to the international travellers.
Let's face it, if "BillONdollar" had accidentally and without knowing stepped on a 0.05 gram of cannabis on his way into Dubai airport and thrown in jail for four years I doubt the smugness would be quite so strong then.
The blindingly obvious root of many people's outrage here is that the sentence is highly disproportionate to the crime. That and the fact it could feasibly happen to anyone - even if they aren't cannabis users and haven't done anything wrong.

Sorry to drag up an old thread but this reminds me of a question that's been puzzling me for a wee while: why do people assume that if you're anti-drugs, you don't drink and/or are religious? Personally, I think using drugs is a very silly (not to mention pointless) thing to do and I worry about the health of people who choose to do them. However, I like a drink at the weekend and I hate religion. So why can't some people see that this kind of world view is possible? I don't get it.
