And yet we still hear about that wee girl who's parents killed her in Portugal, and run their "find our daughter" "charity" as a business.

Pathetic.

Is that comment some kinda joke or are you being a total cunt?

Well how come the child of a couple of (at best) neglective parents is STILL front page news, when other kids go missing every day?

And don't they pay their mortgage out of the "find maddy" fund?

And I was under the impression that they registered it as a limited company not a charity, I'll have to verify that though.

As was pointed out at the time, if this was Wayne and Waynetta slob who'd gone out on the piss and come back to see little frogmella missing, there would have been nothing but derision for the parents, but because they are people of education (and should presumably therefor, know better), everyone is all sympathy for them.

And I still think they did it themselves, there's something about a mum who goes out jogging for a smiley photo-op when she's supposed to be worried about her little girl's wheraabouts.

Does it make me a cunt to think that maybe THIS little girl's family should get the same treatment as the McCanns?

I think it is poor taste exclaiming outright that the McCanns killed their daughter when there's pretty much no proof. If there was - incompetent cops or no - I think they'd at least be in custody by now.

However inappropriate their publicity campaign may seem to be at times I think laying a child's murder at their door speculatively is jumping the gun a bit.

Besides, I don't think they're allowed to withdraw anything from their charitable fund to pay their mortgage... could be wrong though.

That isn't really the point you were making, Cambo.

You basically used another girl's disappearance to then have a less-than-thinly-veiled pop at the McCanns.

Which is quite cuntish, no?

Ally making the point I was gonna make in much milder and perhaps more reasoned terms.

I myself made the "Wayne and Waynetta" anology on these very boards way back when it happened. Critcising the media coverage and consequent public reaction to this case is far far different from the evil, insesnsitive Daily Mail-esque conspiracy shite posted by "Doctor".

Actually it WAS the very point I set out to make, it's just that the moment they cross my mind I get really angry, and I got a touch carried away.

It REALLY winds my watch that dozens of mums are crying themselves to sleep over missing children every month, and we hear so little, yet every day there's yet more Maddie nonsense.

I couldn't even tell you what Mr McCann looks like, but the Mrs sets all manner of alarm bells rining every time I see a pic of her, never mind read about her.

However, possibly not the right time or place, so I'll take the cuntish branding for this with good grace and walk away.

Surely The Mail believes that poor sweet maddie was abducted and sold into slavery by filthy foreigners, and that British people like the McCanns don't commit crimes?

Or have I been seeing different Mail headlines to you?

??? Did you not just say in your previous post that you were gonna accept you were out of order and walk away? Or do you always need to have the last word?

FYI the Mail was the first rag I saw to publish a DPS on the theories as to why parents "might" be involved. Of course, only a halfwit would have bought into any of these "theories". Or someone who thinks that Mrs McCann "just looks like a wrong 'un". Very scientific.

I must admit, I was surprised to see the McCann parents smiling for the press and the dad kicking a football around just 10 days or so after the girl's disappearance. I'm not saying that makes them guilty of anything, but if it was my child, I'd be far too upset for anything like that.

The story of the missing girl from Dewsbury has been on the news every day here so far, so maybe Liam has just missed the programmes covering it.

Fair point, Chris. But I do think that just because you don't appreciate the way they've dealt with the loss or how they come across on telly is a good enough reason to assume they automatically killed their daughter. A bit far, no?

Which seems to be Cambo's dubious point of view here.

Besides, I think recently the whole McCann thing has quietened down as well. I certainly haven't heard it in the news a fraction as much as I did 6-8 months ago

The McCann case all reminds me a bit of the Chamberlain case here, you know "a dingo ate my baby." Lindy (the mother) also was deemed not to be showing enough sorrow by a large proportion of the public here.

Grief is from a first had experience is a funny thing. It often sets in a good months to six weeks after the event, just when people expect you to be over it. Until then you can pretend that it didn't happen. That is why people may not be reacting to a loss the way Joe Public may be expecting them to.

I'm willing to give the parents the benefit of the doubt. Sure there are many more missing children, but that doesn't lessen the the tragedy.

I listen to Radio Five live for hours everyday. And I watch News 24 for at least an hour. Apart from last Wednesday, this story has not been covered at all. It hasnt even been on the front pages of any of the papers. This is a nine year old who has been abducted, yet I have absolutely no idea what she looks like.

Could someone please explain the correct rules of behaviour to be observed when one's child goes missing?

The McCanns are doing what they can. It's no good sitting around crying when they have other children to bring up. They have the means and drive to do something that they think is positive.

At least they can tell their other kids that they tried.

There's simply no use in crying about disparities in media coverage of similar events. Some headlines sell newspapers more than others - that's a fact that the editors have learned and that's why some stories get done to death and others.

In actual fact, Liam, what difference does it make if a missing child story is covered extensively or not? What is the practical effect on the chances of recovery or conviction of whoever is responsible? Very little I would have thought.

PS Liam - here she is:

Think it's been amongst the headline news on the BBC website ever since last Wednesday...

In fact, this is today's slant on it.

Fingers crossed that they find her... :(

I hope both Shannon and Maddie turn up safe and well.

I'm with agreement with Liam on this one. Yes, I know children go missing every year and not all of them are reported locally, never mind in the national or international news. But Maddie's disappearance was constantly the main headline on the news - even having extended news bulletins at one point just to cover Maddie's disappearance. The news for Shannon is reduced to what, a couple of minutes in each bulletin?

I mean, the majority of the papers today went with 'who was wearing what dress at the Oscars'. FFS, who really gives a shit?!!! More pictures of Shannon would have been better to keep her image in everyone's minds, just in the off-chance that someone might spot her...

As for McCanns, don't get me started. They bugger off for a nice night out with their mates and leave THREE kiddies on their own and nothing has been said in the media about that

Actually Sam they have been widely criticised in the media for this. It sparked quite a debate on the matter, it seems a lot of people do this while on holiday. If there's one good thing to come out of this, I should imagine people will think twice about leaving their children again.

Have they? I must have missed it. I can remember a couple of journalists being critical but that was it. Stupid me, journalists don't tell the truth do they? :banghead:

Blimey Sam, don't you think the McCanns have suffered enough or aren't painfully aware of their own failings that night?

They've got to live with this for the rest of their lives. But why waste a great opportunity to kick them at their lowest ebb and take the moral high ground. Strewth.

Nothing was said about this child in Dewsbury over here so far, but we all know the McCanns.

How the hell did it become so widely covered by the media here ? I do not live in Portugal nor in the UK, how can I be aware of that while French kids I never heard about are still missing ?

The amount of coverage a case gets is purely dependent on how many newspapers it will sell, how much higher it will push viewing figures etc.

I think the reasons that the McCann case was so widely reported were the circumstances. Family on holiday and something awful happens. Any nationality thinking they'll visit a popular holiday resort will be interested. The news sells. There's the added editorial angle about the McCanns - were they to blame or not? It's got people talking here still. It sells.

There's been extensive coverage of Shannon's case, but about the only news angle they currently have to go on is: 'Little girl goes missing on her way home, she hasn't been found yet.'

If that's all they have to report, people will, unfortunately, lose interest for the most part.

In the same way, it's naiive and counter-idealistic to even suppose that any missing child is more likely to be reported on the basis of perceived class, wealth, home location or ethnic origin, especially when the general perception of class has altered beyond any of the generally 'accepted' boundaries of the past.

Look at the Bulger case, Sarah Payne, Rhys Jones, etc. Kids from supposed 'working class' backgrounds, not wealthy...

I know Croxteth where Rhys was killed. You wouldn't call it a wealthy area, a 'posh' area' and it's not an area that most people outside of its immediate surrounding really give a toss about. The incident received plent of publicity though.

There was a news angle that would SELL.

How about the thousands of missing teenagers (and younger)who run away from home or are abducted each year?

Sales figures dictate 'reportable' news, rather than other social factors. Sell more papers, you sell more advertising space, etc.

And I really must disagree with Sam (sorry) - FAR more people are more interested in The Oscars than another story of a missing child. It's very sad, but it's a fact. People prefer entertainment and celebrities than bad news and companies would far rather have their latest home cinema advertised next to a grinning Daniel Day-Lewis than opposite a picture of a distraught mother. It's advertising psychology.

Regardless of all that, I'm still another one who would like to think that any children currently missing are returned safely to their families, whether or not the case gets onto the front page of a paper, the BBC headlines or whatever else.

So right... Therefore, people will talk about it, be moved by it or will elaborate all kind of theories at the local pub.

I have to agree with Sam, the fact that they left their young children alone is despicable. My brother went to the same resort and one of the reasons he picked it was because of the child care facility's that they have there.

I do agree with Al that the McCanns must be torn apart by their failings as parents, but surely they would be the first to say that they were wrong in that and want other parents* to be aware to never put their children at risk in that way.

*who are equally neglectful

I'm sure that is true.

However, it is Gerry McCann himself who keeps saying 'We played no part in Maddie's disappearance'. If they had just stood up and said 'We fucked up in the biggest possible way' then I'm sure the public, press and possibly police opinion of them would be a lot different.

Dear, oh dear. Shall we all go back to Cambo's original comments on this thread ... and also Chris's level-headed appraisal of the situation.

Liam originally said that a child had gone missing in Dewsbury ... and no-one cared.

And Steveo said, Yeah, but we still hear about the McCanns all the time instead.

And which way has this one swung?

Appears people would rather talk about the McCanns. And not even Maddie McCann, people would rather just make snide potshots at the parents. Cos, of course, they really haven't suffered enough already, have they? And they deserve to be called every name under the sun because they probably don't even realise they've done wrong and are living it up on the back of all this.

Fcuk me, it's like the Daily Express right here. :nonono:
