what is wrong with walking half a mile home aged 9? its a worry that so many kids dont walk but get driven everywhere, how is that teaching kids to be streetwise?

When I was nine, I walked the mile and a half to school and back again everyday. My little brother, who is nine, and my little sister who is eight, also walk to and from school every day on their own. Is my mother therefore a bad parent?
If you had bothered to find anything out about this story, then you'll have noticed that she was taken by a family member. Chances are she initially went along with this man of her own free will.

Not only that.I also think a kid should be able to hunt,fish,fight and climb by age 9,like Spartans.

I used to wander home from primary school without parental supervision mostly every day. Typically, any kid with an ounce of common sense doesn't go with strangers or creates alot of noise if an unknown adult starts hassling them.
The problem with this Shannon case is the person who abducted her was technically a family member (or step-family) so she probably saw no harm in initially going with him.
While there are lots of sick twats out there, molly coddling kids and escorting them every step of the way from their bedroom to their classroom is barmy and hardly sets the child's mind up properly for self-sufficiency in later life.

True. It may have been a family member who did the deed, but, given that the streets are getting more dangerous, for my daughters i'd / i'll wait until she's a little older until letting her walk half a mile alone, maybe 12-ish, depends how sussed the kid is as well.
Did anyone watch that fly on the wall documentary last night on Channel 4.
Pure spides and millies there and they actually seemed to be loving the attention . Also one of the dolls was actually slagging off the McCanns for being rich etc. They have bloody worked hard and I bet they would give it all up to have her back . There is no comparison
I also believe that Shannon is not back home yet - says it all really !!!
