I'm really gutted, the man is my hero.
EDIT: now watch as the UK totally ignores him and his passing, because he's not a chavballist. Sky TV should shut down for a week as a mark of respect. Just think, without Arthur, I couldn't have watched F1 last weekend, or this weekend coming.

Really phones should go off for a week too, as most civilian long distance calls go through geosyncronous satellites too.

Truly awesome book. The sequels are good but get progressively more soapy with the increasing involvement of a seppo co-author.
really though, I love his short stories the most, especially the semi-silly ones based in and around the white heart inn.

Just heard a 20 min tribute to him on R5 Live, including quotes from him and friends and of course HAL singing that song. Bear in mind his death was announced a couple of hours ago, it was hastily cobbled together. It did have a sentence re: comms satellites too. The BBC will be fine tomorrow after their researchers wake up.
Nothing on Murray Walker yet.

2001 was really more of a novelization of the screenplay Clarke wrote with Kubrick, I believe
Rendezvous With Rama was one of the first "adult" books I read, blew me away.

No, it's not the usualy sort of religious programming where a paedophile in a frockk tells morons to give him money otherwise the sky-fairy will burn them when they're dead.
This is the sort of religious programming which comes live from Sepang in Malaysia.
In fairness, I thought he'd died years ago.

AH, so I wrote it,
I wonder what his gravestone will look like.
I hope it's so black that light falls into it, and is in the exact propotions 1 by 4 by 9.
(and how limited of us to think the progression would end there in only 3 dimensions).
I thoroughly reccomment The Collected Stories, it's a vast tome for sure, but there's not one filler in it. It includes not only The Sentinel and Encounter in the Dawn, the two stories that would form the germ of 2001, but also the original paper on comms satellites, he really did work the whole bloody lot out to the finest detail 15 years before sputnik.
It's slightly bothersome to think he'll be remembered for the movie of 2001, not only is it missing most, if not all, of the actual story, it also casts the monolith and HAL in a light that Arthur would not have chosen if left to his own devices. Still, there have been only two good sci fi films ever made, 2001 and 2010 (which makes sense BTW), and our boy wrote em both (not to mention the opening scene of a million hollywood nonsense verses.....for ID4, read Childhood's End).
Didn't hear he'd died til this afternoon.Never read any of his books but always tuned in to his tv series 'Arthur C Clarke's Mysterious World ' .Top bloke, RIP.
