Yup, Morrissey has played 'Rock Against Racism' gigs, openly supported the 'Anti-Nazi League', spoken out against racism in music and society, done lots of great work supporting the 'ethnic minority' projects in Manchester and other British cities.

Allegedly.

so what exactly are you implying in your thread title?

Why couldnt you title it "Word magazine forced to Apologise to Morrissey"

You're streak of posting nothing but utter SHIT continues unabated.

I have done none of these things I have never attnded a "Rock against Racism" gig, and I dont think I ever will, because the whole concept is pointless and organised by blinded idealists.

Er, Morrissey has endorsed Rock Against Racism.

Fair play to Moz, he stuck to his guns, took them on legally and won but still everyone thinks he's a cunt; surprise surprise. Personally, I think his recent output is somewhat patchy but I'd still buy his next album. I just don't see him as a racist. Having a vague right wing opinion on immigration and racism are two very different things and I have yet to read or see something that qualifies Morrissey as a truly nasty bigot.

The more and more I read opinions about Mozzer on this board the more I can't get The Modern Parents or Millie Tant from Viz out of my head. It's all far too much of a cliche (A Morrissey song title if ever I heard one!).

Well, if you meant the above then sound.

It was the "Allegedly" that threw me

It does look a bit sarcastic, to be fair!

I would have thought it pretty obvious what i'm implying... But I guess even trollified political experts need a little hand holding down the path of the bleedin' obvious at times:

He was pretty ambigious and inflammatory re; racial politics around the time when he was writing songs such as 'National Front Disco'. Now it seems he is willing to come forward and clarify his position; that he is not a racist and does not support racism in any shape or form. I for one am glad that he is finally sending some clear signals regarding where he sits politically.

And if you think none of that history matters, then can you remember when Derek Beacon was elected and the NF were trying to make a comeback? It was very bad timing to be ambigious. Then again of course you do, you probably would have voted for them if you'd been old enough!

The rising tide of racism over the next few years culminated in some right wing nutter deciding to let off nail bombs to try and kill 'the blacks' and 'the queers', not that i'm saying that's Morrisey's fault, what I'm saying is that people, especially famous people, need to be careful about what signals they send out.

Well, I really dont know where to start with this. Do I biother explaining for the MILLIONTH time what "The National Front Disco" is all about? Or all this hyperbolic racial nonsense, or the reference to David Copeland? Decisions, Decisions.

The song "The National Front Dsico" is a lament by a mother to her son who has joined The National Front, the lyric s "England for the English" is spoke in about the son, David. jesus its not fucking hard to understand. And it just shows how totally idiotic you are because if you knew what you were talking about, you'd refernece Bengali in platform or Asian Rut as examples of Morrisseys alleged Racism, but then again, it shouldnt surprise me that you're one of those people who sees the words "National" and "Front" used together and immediatley becomes offended, regardless of context. Hell, i bet you were offended when the BNP ran party political broadcasts in the run up to the last General Election?

*sigh*

The National Front, The BNP, or indeed any far right party has never, ever been a serious force in British Poltics. The BNP's best individual result in an election was when they won 16.5 of the vote in Saddleworth East in 2001. They came third and celebrated this as a major victory. Off the top of my head, I think they came 4th in the same constituiency in 2005 with about 8% of the vote. They were about 30% behind the Labour candidate in 2001, and never had a prayer of winning the seat. Of course, if they did win the seat, they would have achieved nothing. Labour has (and had) a workable majority and would never have needed to get the one solitary vote the BNP would have given them to get any legislation through Parliament. In fact, in 2005, I believe they lost their deposit in every seat they put a candidate in.

As for Local Government. Lets disregard the fac that councils have been powerless since the Local Givernment reforms under Thatcher, nationwide, the BNP has fifty two councillors. The conservatives have nearly two thousand.

Also, any gains that far right parties make in this country, (and in Western Europe in general, although the scale may vary, and have mitigating factors- Le Pen in the 2002 French presidential Election) tend to be very shortlived. You mention Derak Beacon. Who won a council seat in Millwall in 1993, I recall? A time of great economic problems for this country (well, it was the start of the recovery), so its not really surprising he won a seat, and then what happened, he faded into obscurity. What did he do while in "power"? Diddly squat.

I dont remember this "rising tide" in Racism. Its seems neither do the British Electorate, 0.1% of whom voted for a far right party in the 97 Election (compared with a monstrous 0.7 in 2005, which can probably be attibuted to a 10% drop in turnout more than anything else). What i do rember however, is that David Copeland was a psychotic loner who had serious issues emntally. And i believe is detained indefinitley in a mental health unit. So i fail to see how this alleged "rising tide of racism" has anything to do with thr actions of very disturbed man.

Now to make my own point. Maybe if the BNP (and not the National Front, as they are effectively a dead party) were invited into the political arena, to join the debate, (lets get Nick Griffin on Question Time) then idiots like you, Craig, wouldnt be so scared of them so much because you wouldnt be relying on a fucking SINGER to inform your political beliefs. I know of not one Morrissey fan- and I'd wager I know more than you- who supports any far right political party. In fact, they seem to be a pretty left leaning bunch, so one is forced to wonder if his alleged racist comments have had any effect on anyones political beliefs. In fact, why dont you go around and poll a BNP rally, and ask them why they support the BNP, and see how many say "Well, its because of what Morrissey said" Or should I save you the bother, and tell you right now, that NONE OF THEM would say that.

Blah blah blah...

I'm not afraid of Nick Griffin; I've been in the company of far worse.

Mozza's positioning in the 90's was bad timing to say the least, I bought the Vauxhall album, saw the irony and the sarcasm, and was a big fan until he decided to go all vague.

Yes I do find the BNP offensive; Only an extreme right winger (or an idiot talking shit, perhaps even a 'streak of shit') wouldn't.

They can have their say on TV or whatever, along with the monster raving looney party perhaps, but don't ever forget that the UK's economic success was and continues to be built on the back of immigrants.

Liam - good & eloquently put. I find it so boring & its starting to annoy me that some cocks go on about the evil Morrissey so much. Does it offend you-so what!! The bloke i was stood next to at the Sunderland Mozzer gig 2 months ago had a Che Guervara t-shirt on. So what. Now i know for sure he would not give a Fuck if he knew i used to listen to Ian Steward & Screwdriver. But i did. Does that make me a cunt for listening or do i have to attend rock against racism after-school clubs eh. But then again so did Suggs & Madness etc believe me.

Craig - does it confuse you that i also listen to Left- wing, commie ALF shit from Crass, Conflict etc.. went to London last Autumn just to attend the 'Feeding of the 5000' gig. I love it but i dont care about the 'message' mate, its the music. Penny Rimbauld/Steve Ignorant/Colin Jerwood talk out of their middle-class arses as far as im concerned but i still buy their cds' and pay for their gigs. Like Liam says you need to learn & understand Mozzers lyrics because you clearly do not. Then again, you never got over your 'problem' with vikings being drunken male loud leary heterosexuals did you. Bless...

Does this confuse you?: Some people change their music buying habits based on what an artist stands for.

Does this confuse you?: I have no problem with Vikings. I just misunderstood the sense of humour when I first came to this site. If my apology was good enough for Al it should be good enough for anyone else, unless they are in training for Olympic grudge holding.

Again, this statement makes no sense. Morrissey's albums from Vauxhall onwards didn't have a single racist or vaguely racist connotation about them. I have listened to Southpaw, Maladjusted, You Are The Quarry etc fairly heavily since 1997 and not so much as ethnicity itself is mentioned. Are you sure Morrissey went racist from (and including) Vauxhall onwards? I'm really not hearing that.

Basically - and I'm going to be blunt here - you just don't fucking get the guy's lyrics. National Front is clearly about a mother reflecting on her son being "taken in" by the organisation of the same name. We'll Let You Know also from Your Arsenal is littered with negative reflections on the course the characters have chosen to follow (We may even be the most depressing people you've ever known). In short, you'd have to be an utter numpty to misunderstand what's going on with those songs. I think Liam's absolutely right in this instance, some people see the NF and go mad demanding censorship and hurling accusations... completely missing the point of it all.

Your argument of "well fans may see him singing as a racist and become one" is really fucking dodgy at best, is that seriously your main argument here? Jesus.

I think you're fighting a losing battle against nobody here, Craig. You're running your usual point into the ground with some gusto but it's time to realise that neither Morrissey nor us are nasty right wing racists. Liam's post nailed most of my own attitude towards your posts on the head so I won't go any further.

1- Vauxhall was released in 94m two years after Your Arsenal- which has "The National Front Disco" in it, and after The "Finsbury Park Incident.

2- Its nice to see that quoting statistics and medical facts can still get reffered to in this dayt and age as a "streak of shit"

3- I also quite like how you avoided nearly ever single point I made, to make some pathetic, not to mention wholly inaccuratre, statment which justifies your own position. Explain to me how, the economic success of the 90's was built off "off the back of immigrants"? There was me thinking it was a result of sensible economic policy, the groeth of the service based economy and favourable global economic conditions. Immigrants make up a relatively tiny proportion of the population, so how are they the basis of it?

And what the fuck do Vikings have to do with anything?

Racism was on the rise in the 90's in the UK; Stephen Lawrence, Derek Beacon (councillors do affect the community, it's warped parts of the community who do racist attacks), other murders, beatings and eventually Mr. Copeland - A fruit loop he may be, but even fruitloops take in whats coming at them from the media and the community.

Admittedly my memory is pretty patchy on what lyrics came from what album etc... It was the one with NF disco on when all the crap started...

I do remember Mozzer being quite ironic and sarcastic in songs about the BNP / NF. I loved his music up to this point then...

I remember reading some dodgy quotes from him in an interview in Q magazine, something about too many immigrants or black people and Englishness being undermined as a result, again I can't quite remember, but somebody must have a scan of the interview.

Then he was dancing on stage with a union jack after refusing to discuss the race stuff with the NME (the NME hadn't completely lost the plot by this point).

It was that Q interview that made me think WTF, maybe this guy wasn't taking the piss with songs like National Front disco.

He then stopped talking about it altogether after the Q interview, making me and others think he was part, albeit a very small part of the problem when I thought he had been part of the solution in taking the piss out of the NF / BNP.

Maybe I imagined some of this... Does anyone have the Q interview?

Anyway, I'm glad that this time he is standing up and pointing out where he stands. That's my main point. My other point is that he has fucked up in the past, if my memory of events is more or less correct.

Liam re; Vikings, just scroll back a couple of posts, it's not a response to you.

It is just sad journalists trying to get stories, is the reason Morrissey won't talk to them (he is always mis-quoted).Don't believe everything you read. The journalists at the NME are bunch of cocks anyway

Nothing wrong with a Union Jack, or any other flag, as long as it's used to represent all the people of the country.

Sorry this thread ain't too cheery... Getting a bit tired of it meself!

Morrissey is certainly no racist. All that pallava during the early 90's was part of a fixation on macho culture he had at the time - Kray twins, boxing etc....Plus that flag waving stuff; nobody ever criticised Geri Halliwell or Oasis when they were doing so far more explicitly.

Yer right. It came in the car about 6 months ago with my wife listening. I purposefully never played it around her, worried it might offend her, but at the end she giggled and said it was true and she understood well the emotions he was singing about.

The function of the BNP in the current political set up is to deflect attention from the fundamentally racist reforms of immigration law brought in by the Labour government since 1997. The BNP are an irrelevance. If you want to campaign agaisnt racism in politics there are far more powerful and deserving targets out there.

I bought Morriseys's greatest hits when I was in America last week cos it worked out to be only £6. I don't like it. Thank you and good night.

Interesting. BNP or any X NP are to be taken in account. What you said about the fundamentally racist reforms of immigration law is also very interesting. Sarkozy understood it when he was standing for the Presidential election while Minister of Home Office. He even made the lapsus "he is the best of us", speaking of Blair, while candidate of the conservative party here.

If you do not make any racist reforms of immigration (we even have a minister of Immigration by now - sounds a bit nazi, no?) then, you find yourself with a Le Pen (Front National) at the second round od the presidential election. Or with someone like Haider in Austria. Or with a government like the Danish one. Or with a mediatic party like the Dutch one at the moment. I don't mention central European countries, I think we have seen the same things in Czechoslovakia.

Back to Morrissey, I agree with Al Jarvo. Better when he was the Smiths. From abroad, it sounded a bit politacally borderline, but it was more like a British delight. True that, by the beginning of the nineties, he sounded more like I sing for the Brits and I fart at the Continent. Only Parisian poshes care about him nowadays...

you're points are so badly made and incorrect ("Stephen Lawrence, Derek Beacon and other incidents" being the prime example)that you're not even worth trying to debate with. You have this warped view, which is at least as ignorant as any BNP material I've ever read, in which you seem to manipulate events, and make stuff up to justify it.

I dont know what you're problem is, but you just want to charaterize EVERYONE as a racist. Let me tell you something.

1- I believe in controlled immigration 2- I believe that Muslim Council of Britain has a disproprtionate amount of power in this country. 3- A significant reason for racial tension in this country is because immigrant communities have failed to integrate intro soceity and preferred to establish their own inward looking communities, which are almost like ghettos. 4- The failure of many immigrant children unable to speak English is one of the biggest problems facing this countrys education system.

So where do i get my BNP membership card?

But what I really want to know is this, why are you so quick to catergorize people as racists? This thread isnt the first time you've done ti. There have been countless others. What are you trying to justify to yourself? I have systematically destroyed your points iwth hard facts which you call a "streak of shit"!

One of the biggest myths that whats left of the Socialist movement in this country soins is how the government, mass media and corporations spread fear in order to either make money or maintain their own positions. YetI see just as much 9in relative terms anyway) fear peddling coming from the other side about far right extremism.
