Doctor Who Composer dies

One of the founders of electronic music and a composer for the Doctor Who sci-fi series has died in Adelaide.

Tristram Cary died in Royal Adelaide Hospital on Thursday. He was 82.

Cary was an inspiration for generations of musicians working in electronic music, the head of music technology studies at the University Of Adelaide's Elder Conservatorium of Music.

"His influence on music was global". "Although Cary's music was in classical music, the technology that he pioneered has permeated most styles of music-making today, from pop to Techno to experimental".

Cary was born in England and conceived ideas for electronic music while working as a naval radar officer in World War II.

He co-designed the VCS3 synthesiser, which became the must have instrument for such avant-garde classical composers and rock artists as Brian Eno, The Who, Pink Floyd and King Crimson.

Cambo will stop posting for a week as a sign of mourning.

A pioneer, he even preceded the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. And that score on The Daleks way back in 1963 - shivers down the spine! He will be missed.

I still can't believe that Smash Hits printed the "lyrics" to Voodoo Ray back then!

And, yup, Delia Derbyshire eventually worked on the Ron Grainer theme, but Tristram Cary (and Rex Tucker) were there before Delia (although their version of the theme never appeared).

Tristram did, however, contribute incidental music to some Dr Who episodes - see here for more details.

But she was a girl, so they ignored her.

And Ron, who wrote the actual notes, has been wormfood for even longer.
