Mail on Sunday - UB40

The Mail on Sunday is giving away a copy of the new UB40 album tomorrow.

If I find out that any of you have bought it, I will not be impressed.

They played a couple of cunts, sorry snatches, of new songs and I thought it was their best of or something. But no, it's new songs and they sound the same of all the old shit, sorry songs.

They are gonna play until I reach 40 years old... hence the name! duh!

Doncha love people who use the one YB40 album in their collection as evidence to prove that they 1, like reggae, 2, aren't racist and 3, don't only listen to Queen at all so shut it actually.

I bought Promises and Lies, but mainly bought it so when someone asked me if I were a racist I could reply, "of course not, see... I have a UB40 album!":D

Ali, the front man has recently fopped off as he's not raking in enough (!) His brother has replaced him I think...

They were not altogether bad in their day.

Don't like them at all, not even one song.

I didn't mind them for awhile, but they didn't have a lot of good original material, and the pop covers didn't do a whole lot for me.

I've got the three Labour Of Love albums, there are some good covers on there that I still listen to from time to time. I also seem to recall that they made sure the authors of those songs got the money due them, some of whom really needed it.

I've got tons of reggae, musically UB40 are just a little diversion from the real stuff that warrants more attention.

I think of Bob Marley, Toots, Jimmy Cliff, "The Harder They Come" Junior Murvin, Lee Perry and even The Clash all before UB40.

When I saw Interpol in Zurich, that was actually my second gig of the day. Earlier on, me and the rest of us had been in this restaurant for us dinner, when suddenly this Swiss Folk/Yodelling band came on They did a full hour set, and a four song encore, which had in it a fucking mad version of Red Red Wine. It was awesome.

Then some drnk bloke collapsed at the door.

So i suppose I have UB40 to thank for that.

Actually, if we're honest, I bet a lot of us would have to admit that the list should be called "bands we used to like when we were young and a bit shit". Level 42 is a fabulous suggestion for that list; I used to really like them. I liked Simply Red (saw them live twice) and UB40 too, particularly their early album Bagariddim.

Imagine my surprise when I turned 15 and found that they were all complete wank.

I suppose that's why I feel so much animosity towards them now. I feel conned and dirty that I used to sully my ears with their smutty, pappy imitation of music.

I'd put Queen in the same box. A damp old crispbox left beside an oily canal near a used johnny and some porn.

My guiltiest secret of all is The Return of Bruno by Bruce Willis. I used to love that album.
