as some of you'se lot know , i've been with lady for a very long time (16years!)should i make an honest women of her?

Never been bothered tbh,because it would cost me 20k just to feed MY family,and HER FAMILY IS EVEN BIGGER THAN MINE!

So what to do?

You don't need to spend stupid amounts in order to get married. You don't need to invite everyone in your family. It's about you and your woman not 250 other people. That's just for show and if you can't afford it, just invite the immediate family.

Exactly. It takes a bit of thought and planning but you can do it on a budget. My parents have three daughters and it wouldn't be fair to expect them to spend a bomb on each of our weddings.

But Nuts, if you want to, it's a nice thing to do after all this time. However, you could always just get engaged. A ring on the finger shows commitment.

People shouldn't feel obliged to get married in this day and age. But if you do decide to do it, all the best and I'll PM you my address for the invitation

I got it very wrong first time and very right the 2nd time!

The key is spending a decent amount of time with the person and also living with them beforehand (and of course having done the wild thing+++).

After 16 years you'll be more than sure about your ability to live together!

Don't expect marriage to change anything fundamental in your relationship -that can be fatal- It's a nice day out, a nice romantic gesture and ticks many legal boxes.

The best thing to do to keep it cheap is to runaway. Get married on holiday and tell everyone when you get back. Some people will be upset, but if you can't afford it you've made the best compromise!

Same here!! Yeah you don't have to spend the earth on the wedding. My first one was like the fucking Royal Wedding.Everything had to be colour coded.

What's most important is what you're there for. I found the worst thing last October was who I hadn't invited, but I thought BALLS. It's not a big venue,so if you didn't get an invite,sorry I didn't want you hanging off the balcony.

You could do what I did and have just a registry wedding at the venue.Most venues are licenced for it.There was me,Julie,my two stepkids (one who was my best man! 12 years old) my Mum and Dad,Julie's mum...and that was it. No one misses out because they got to see the photos. Everyone came later. Go for it,you'll never look back!

That being said though, marriage can change a woman. Making her feel that you now belong to her and so does all yer stuff... but after 16 years of dating I'm sure that whole thing isn't something to worry about.

I'm sure it would help in family circles for the both of you as well, as it would stop the gossip of "They've been dating for 16 years and he still won't pop the question, what's up with that?" "Well what I've heard..."

Of course get married - your, her and your childrens rights are all compromised if you are not married. Dont spend £20k thats just plain daft, just have a civil ceremony for closest blood relations only - cost £1k max, in a nice hotel eg Manchester Midland hotel.
