Downloaded Itunes - but for some reason it willnae work on this fucking computer.

Says that it cannae find the folder called itunes - says it's supposed to be in my music - so I dumped the folder in there and it still won't work.

I've been installing and re-installing for two bastard hours.

Is there any other programme I can use to transfer my CDs to files that will work on an ipod?

Help will be appreciated big time.

I havnae even got my ipod yet, but it should be here the morra and wanted to make a head start.

BIG fucking mistake.

The files don’t have to be in the itunes folder…it does not matter. You can import tracks to your library from any folder

Can the pod actually play standard files or just apple's crapware ones?

If standard.

Cdex is what you want.

Just ordered an 80gb classic. Havnae got it yet.

I thought you had to use itunes to put music on the ipod.

If not - I can suss it easily when I get it. Cheers for the tips :thumb:

Yeah as said before, when you first plug it into your computer,it will set you up your own I-Tunes folder, which you can click on FILE and click on Add File To Folder (erm one at a time) whether it be on your music files or from Shared files like Bearshare or Limewire. If you remove any songs from the playlist,it will automatically remove them off the I-Pod when you plug in again. Wow 80GB!!

PS when I first got it for Christmas,it wouldn't work on Windows 98,only 2000/ME or VISTA.

So if it starts up an Itunes folder can I create subfolders in there ie New Order, Joy Division, Happy Mondays etc....?

Yeah Once you've got all your library of songs, you can create playlists, and The PLayList title comes in a list on the left. Just drag each track into that Playlist title, and when you plug in your I-POd,you can click on which Playlists you want to add,or if you've not got the room like me,click off a playlist but add a new one.

You don’t have to.. i. if you are ripping any cd, the folders will appear automatically in the itunes folder. And the subfolders too

It's great when I've got it on in the car.I can put it into SHUFFLE SONGS mode, and it randomly plays whatever I've got on.Needless to say New Order and Morrissey are prominent. It's like MONTY FM!!

Cheers again Andres. And not forgetting you either MONTS - sure I have you on me phone, so if I struggle the morra.......expect a call ;)

iPods can play wav files (I think), so if you have 80Gb drive I'd rip them as lossless wav files which can then be used to burn compilation CD's. With that much space I really wouldn't consider mp3's unless you have to. Windows media player can do this and should already be installed.

Just thought of a problem, unless imported via iTunes, the iPod doesn't recognise the albums so you don't get the nice pictures on screen. Scrub the above.

Oh yeah the albums get added automatically but if you want to add individual bands onto the I-Pod I thought you had to create the playlist folders or everything goes on.. Mind you bloody 80GB!!

It's weird getting artwork on.Sometimes I-Tunes might have the Album title slightly different (Capitals here,no capitals there) so you've got to tweak it. Or in the case of Morrissey's Southpaw Grammar, which ain't on I-Tunes(!) I clicked on Amazon to Copy the album sleeve to file, and add it in the I-Tunes INFO file.

Case sensitivity? Bloody hell, in windows? seriously? Fuck!

I think Apple's own crapware format is lossles, simillar to FLAC.

Why an Ipod though, why not a more standard (or less proprietry if you prefer) one. Archos make fabulous media players that do video and everything and come in huge sizes. And there's endless "USB flashdrive with a built-in mp3 player" solutions out there, up to stupendous sizes (the hooj ones are not really flash drives at all, but to a PC it's all just "USB mass storage"....mind you so is an ipod if you don't have itunes on the machine). I dunno, I'm just really suspicious of any potential format lock-in that you could suffer with highly proprietry devices. Having said that, the ipod does seem a well built piece of kit.

Don't bother trying to create/organise any itunes folders yerself.

Just copy your files from wherever they are on yer PC, and iTunes will organise its folders at will. Which basically means you end up with duplicates files, natch, but saves fcuking about with iTunes which is a bit of a bugger. I've got separate download folder for torrents and Soulseek. Once something's fully downloaded I copy it into iTunes then delete the original download. Simple.

shugsy the iPod will come with a disc iTunes also requires quicktime (all free) and if it's not on the disc you'll be pointed to the website prob'ly it creates a folder that holds your tunes and a file that works as the database of all the contents of your music library - ie the iTunes player

each time you have iTunes open and put a CD in your drive it will prompt you to download/rip the album and in doing so, it creates a folder for the artist and inside that, a folder for the album etc etc.
if you're getting your files from 'elsewhere' then you need to add the folder to your artist/album folder set-up and then drag the contents to your iTunes player before you can play it. iTunes can play most things - even midi files, (and convert to formats including wav files etc....)

as monty suggested, you can then create 'playlists' (compilations/mixes etc) - and burn CDs from these.

it's up to you whether you control what goes on to your iPod by automatically syncing with the contents of your computer's library of tunes or whether you want to add specific tracks manually.

similarly, it's quite easy to choose what sort of format you want to rip your CDs to. whatever the music boffs say, it's all listenable. especially if the tracks are mostly new order bootlegs recorded through someone's hat. the thing to bear in mind is that all these tracks go on to the iPod via your PC so even if the iPod is 80Gb then your PC is going to get quite full - especially if you have it set to automatically sync and have a 'lossless' format selected

if you need to be talked down give me a call in air traffic control

A couple tips to stat you off:

  1. Make sure you have a large GB harddrive where you are ripping the music to. The music needs to be stored either on your computer or external harddrive for as long as you use the iPod.

  2. When downloading soundtracks or compilations with many artists, make sure to state that its a compilation before ripping it so it will all go in one folder, either that or it will create seperate folders for all the different artists on the album.

  3. Take the time to orgnanize iTunes... it will pay off inthe end... especially with smart-playlists (playlists that automatically compiles the music into a playlist anytime a song fits the parameters you set).

  4. highly suggest the PodFreq. Its an FM transmittor that uses the iPods battery, and can play your iPod through any FM radio (the car, the house, alarm clock, etc). All others are crappy, but this one really works well... plus it is its own case.

  1. COPY and SAVE Your iTunes Library (not the song files, but an iTunes library document) in another folder regularly. If it gets screwed up or lost, you'll be reorganizing your files all over again.

Ipods are pieces of crap. I bought a 80 dollar sony mp3 in mid June off amazon and it works beautifully. easiest thing in the world. although i haven't tried to download vids to it yet. its pink and rectangular with a small screen. very pleased with it. my problem is having windows fucking 2000. so i can't get itunes, zune, etc,i'm sure i'll find something that bugs me with it...

You can still use them. Just do not install their crapware, and the device will detect as USB mass storage. I've managed to mount an Ipod nano on my Linux machine with no fiddling about at all. Can't see win2k giving you any grief either.

Cheers people, all these tips are just about sinking in.

So that's Monty, Jarvo & Will that will be getting annoyed if me ipod arrives today. Cheers lads.

And yes Tim, taxi indeed  :thumb:

If it uses the .m3u playlist format, you can just import than in Nero or whatever. If it doesn't then yaaaa booo sucks, for buying proprietry, non compliant snakeoilware.

I love iTunes as a driver for the iPod, but its realy shitty at burning cds. I prefer WMP to burn my cds, much easier to rearrange them the way I want the songs...

All you have to do is click on the playlist you want to burn, then click the "burn CD" icon on the lower right of the screen.

apple will let you download every song you buy twice, so if you do lose them an email to their helpdesk will soon sort that out.
