I'll watch the swimming, because I know one of the coaches and I like to see wet people in tight clothes.
Will probably try to catch Jo in the football.

I'll watch the Football, and some of the Athletics. And I'll be cheering on whoever Andy murray is facing in the Tennis.
The Weightlifting is always good for a laugh as well.

"Come on Andy!" "Yay!" Murray Mound and all that bullshit. Actually in the belief that one day he'll win Wimbledon. As if!
It's in people's nature though isn't it? Cheering on the 'homegrown' boy (although it really bugs me when reporters call Murray British whereas Henman of course is English). Personally I didn't give a toss about Henman and I don't care much for Murray either. In fact, come to think of it, I don't care for tennis full stop.

Will watch the track events, boxing and maybe swimming... all the other events are just silly additions to the event.

I've never watched the opening ceremony before, but my wife insists upon it. So, yes. In addition, I'll be watching gymnastics, track and field, basketball, tennis, weightlifting, table tennis, perhaps a bit of footy and swimming, plus all that other cool stuff you only get to see every four years, like the modern pentatholon and team handball.
I love the boxing. The one thing I'll always watch. No mystery to it, they just score it as they see it, when they see it. Proper boxing.
I've won tickets to the Handover / End of Games party on the Mall at the end of the month (Cheers, Don!).

just a shame they limited the womens events as victoria would have scooped several golds there i'm sure.
just about anything........except for basketball, trying to get all of those overpaid millionaires to function as a cohesive team is rather painful to watch.
Just checked the cable guide, the events are scattered across several networks: NBC, MSNBC, CNBC and USA. The football starts Thursday morning at 2 a.m. local time on MSNBC, about 5 hours from now. With the demands on my time, I'll probably just check to see what's OnDemand every night and pick and choose from that list.

The Chinese have excluded an American athlete for his political activism and the smog will be back in time for the opening ceremony tomorrow.
I can see this going down as one of the least-meaningful Games there has been. The brutality of the Chinese regime is simmering, and will boil over quite soon into a savage round of beatings and arests. They just can't help it.
And then we have to look forward to London, which will be organised by middle-manager halfwits and will probably bankrupt us all.

What I want to know is this: How come when they were giving everyone the history lesson, how ocme they missed out "The Great Leap Forward," The "Cultural" Revolution, The actual Revolution, The land reforms or 58-61 etc etc? I was looking forward to see how they told us about them through the means of dance.
and I'll tell you this: I dread to think how all those dancers in the opening ceremony were treated over the last year.
so i guess the big question is this: will the closing ceremony just be one great big mass execution of dissidents? Imagine the money china could make by selling of the organs.

Yes, and congrats to the US men's gymnastics team. A very surprising accomplishment to win a bronze, considering their lack of experience and the two last minute injury replacement. The Chinese were great, though, except on the high bar. It is especially impressive watching them on the rings!
I am surprised that Germany got beaten so badly by Greece in men's basketball. Just goes to show how good European hoops is.

I did see the women's synchronised diving yesterday. It was pretty cool to watch, though I must confess I don't really see the point of synchronised diving.

Cycling and the rowing, plus some of the athletics interest me, oh, there is badminton and table tennis (ping pong for some people) I know that some of the events are over, but still i didnt login until now

The American TV coverage seems more even handed/smarter this year, not so much cheerleading for American "entitlement" for gold medals... or maybe I've just been too jaded in recent years. Maybe NBC network is intimidated by China, so they are not so nationlistic, seems better in my opinion.
... and they actually show sports most of the time! Not so many fluff pieces for the ladies. Have not seem any Americans that lost the gold whining and making excuses yet either.

Haven't even seen him swim. Been watching the boxing, mostly. Our announcers are really trashing the judges and to a lesser extent, the refs, for rubbish scoring and failing to ref the bouts. Are the UK announcers saying the same thing?

Wow- we're actually quite good at the cycling and the rowing- if only the track and field athletes would make better use of all that lottery funding...
ive held a gold medal
ermm a bloke from great harwood won shooting gold in early 90's and came to a sportsman dinner in near by accrington and in the bar he let me hold it and put round my neck.heavy but not has haevy as i'd imagined . britain are good at posh sports

Yup. Lots of complaints of bias towards Chinese fighters. One of our guys got beat early on, by a ridiculous margin. He admitted, he lost on the day, but the points scoring was over heavy in favour of the hosts. 'Live' point scoring is a good thing, but only if its done fairly.
Reminds me of the days when it was notoriously difficult for a Brit fighter to go over the pond and win a belt. Then Lennox Lewis came along, our resident Canadian.

For ignoring the ref, he got a "warning." The announcers really tore the ref a new one, said he should have stepped between them when he said "stop" (and neither of the boxers was one of ours.).
I did watch one of ours lose to one of your last night, and that's how it should have been; your guy was the better boxer.

I dunno. Accent just fucked me off every time. Can't think of many people in tennis that aren't upper class toffs. Ok.. John McEnroe has somehow deservedly won the publics affection, but he was hated for years, particularly when he was winning.

So this is the last Swimming Event.
And Phelps or no Phelps, this is a grand tragedy as the coverage of this by the BBC has been nothing short of outstanding. Especially that scouser who does the analysis, Steve Parry.
The only thing topping this lot in the Plympics is Barry Davies (obviously) and the athleitcs when Steve Cram or Stuart Storey gointo Rant mode or when Michael Johnson sits there with his (deserved) Jupiter sized ego.

And Poles have been full of fair-play during the épée final. Respect.
i have had lots of fun watching the gymnastics. mostly because it seems to really wind my children up if i say 'i can do that' every time any of the athletes does anything.

I do have to say though, my favourite moment in the Olympics was after the drug cheats race, they showed Sue Barker and Colin Jackson shouting "come on!" at the end of the race and as she won, Michael Johnson stood there, looking like the coolest fucker in the history of the Universe saying "what did I tell you?"

You seem to be having some difficulty distinguishing between recreational drug use and cheating at a sporting event.

Next to the 18 year-old silver medal winner, Nastia Liukin, the gold medal winner looks like she's about 10, 12 tops (there's some evidence that she's 14, and thus, too young to compete).
Doesnt surprise me. China have gone to astonishing lengths to ensure they finish top of the medals table.

well Christine is not a proven drug cheat. Like ferdinand she opted out of having doping done. i guess the reason for both was they had taken something they shouldnt have. Anyway, she's clean now so good on her.

On the contrary I think theres a distinct parallel. Take music for a start. There are some folk who claim that New Orders music is better than Chris de Burghs. Now it has also been claimed that NO took various narcotics while recording several of their songs, while Chris was stone cold sober when he recorded Lady In Red. Should NO be stripped off recognition for all their efforts? IMO the answer is NO.
Now to sport. Any sprinters that regulary smoke pot and can run 100m in under 10 seconds deserve a medal in my book.

Can't really comment on Christine Ohuruogo being a drugs cheat, evidence is not really forthcoming in favour either way.
The Brits adopted a much more stringent testing system that year, which involved informing the authorities on their whereabouts 24/7. Miss Ohuruogo missed her last random test because she turned up for training at a track only to be found it was hired out for a school sports day, and didn't inform the authorities she'd moved onto an inferior track down the road. She was tested within 72 hours of each of her missed random tests.
She pleaded 'absent-mindedness', and seeing her running the relay heat today, it's most definitely possible, especially cos she's female.
There are currently 21 British athletes who have missed two random tests in the last calendar year. And no one has missed a third test since she and another chap (can't remember his name) got banned in the same week. The word scapegoat springs to mind, but it's a good system, and it would be nice to see other countries adopt it.
As for Rio... a couple of acquaintances of mine have supplied him with Colombian marching powder when down in Sarfff London in recent years, so i can understand him missing his far less rigorous testing schedule.
