Seeing as the conventions are coming up, we might as well have a thread on this.

I have studied Yank Politics in some detail, and still maintain somewhat of an interest in it. I have this to say on it though.

IF YOU ARE ELIGIBLE TO VOTE IN THIS YEARS US PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, AND DONT VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA, YOU ARE A CUNT.

Seeing as you are a cunt, I'll keep that in mind.....

Is this a thinly veiled swipe at EdelBrock?

It seems to be coming down for many people as being the smart black guy versus the old white guy. There are still a lot of people, mainly middle-aged white people, who simply do not want to vote for a smart-ass black guy.

The pundants hated McCain at first, but have totally warmed up the propaganda machine for him with issues of energy costs, hating muslims, blaming immigrants. Republicans = cheap oil, Democrats are said to want expensive oil so they can destroy the economy and build up a socialist police state like the USSR (listen to Sean Hannity or Rush Limbaugh).

Oddly, the right wing pundants have now taken the stand that Republicans are, and always have been the party that have looked toward the future in energy concerns and where society will get fuel. Of course for years these same pundants have said the energy crisis was a farce, that technology would solve everything because there was virtually endless supplies, and even thou Republicans were in control they did almost nothing to hedge against future rises in energy costs.

Pundants say all we have to do is give land/ ocean drilling to the oil companies and we will have affordable oil for 200+ years from North America, without any negatives. They are trying to tell people that this is all the Democrats fault that we are not using all this oil right now at half the price. It is all so simple and easy!

For sure. If McCain wins, it just show how much Americans are a bunch of boneheads. War, war, war, guns, recession, fuck the poor etc. And then four more years...

i can't imagine how the republicans can reasonably win the election this year, short of flying airplanes into buildings to scare everyone into voting for them.

With Bush's ratings so low, I am suprised that McCain is doing so well. Obama has a strong personna, I'll give him that. When it comes to foriegn relations I think it is what the country needs... but I really can't get past his policies.

And while everyone is over-generalizing about Republicans, McCain is quite a different Republican. Wish Obama's persona and McCain's policies and ability to reach across the table could be put together, it would be what this country really could use.

I wish Hunter Thompson as still around, I'd be interested to see what he made of it all. I feel really uncomfortable about how much money has to be spent on convincing people to vote in America. How can the advertised product bear any relation to the actual reality of administration under either of these men?

To me, American politics seems to be all about how resistant the people in office are to the various lobbies, unions and industries whi seem to have a great deal of power. Big oil and the arms industry seem to have determined foreign policy for years. Potential candidates should just announce how they intend to resist these forces. Or maybe they have done, I stopped being interested in March.

I have a bad feeling that McCain will win largely because too many Americans aren't ready to vote for a black (well, he's half black, but that's aparently the same as being 100% black) guy, not to mention a guy with a Muslim sounding name. Scary! :uhoh:

i once agreed with this but a great majority of new people that registered to vote have been for the democratic party. This is has given me reason to be hopeful.

It's all very odd around here. We're primarily a blue state, but with the RNC rolling into town everyone has gone crazy. I'm sure that was the goal. The giant banners they have put up at the convention site look strikingly similar to the Chinese flag. That, I am sure, they did not intend.

He has tried to lure in other voters and has gone more right than usual, but Obama has done similar changes to appeal to a wider audience as well... let's face niether candidate could win an election standing firmly in thier positions, they would ostrasize too many voters.

While there are those that won't vote for the guy because he is black, I do think there is also a good portion of people that will vote for him simply because he IS black. People want to be part of a movement and to be part of history, so that they can later say "I remember voting for the 1st black president"... plus it gives many whites proof to thier friends and loved ones that they are not racist "See, I voted for Obama so I can't be racist!"

I have a feeling the latter group is larger.

I mean...try to find anyone that will actually confess that they voted for Dubya...it's impossible...so I'm still not sure how he is a two term president...

Well here is one, but it wasn't because I liked Bush, rather I really didn't like Gore or Kerry. I wasn't happy voting for him, but it really was voting the lesser of evils. He is a two-term pres since the Dems really blew it by selecting Kerry, all they needed was someone slightly likable to beat Bush... and they picked Kerry...wtf:skeptic:

This election is much better, in that there are two viable candidates, not a bunch of half-wits lined up for the office... though I think a Clinton/Obama ticket would be much more viable on the Dems side... that ticket would have little weakness, whereas Obama running for president now has his weaknesses... if he ran after a VP office, he would be unstoppable.

and to yer other question Jeff... yer always a cnut in my book, no matter who you vote for:thumb:

It will be interesting to see what the voter turnout will be this time around. I suspect it will be relatively high. At least both candidates have some charisma.

An Obama/Clinton ticket might be strong, by pulling in both of those rather polarized groups, or it might be weaker because so many people seem to have Hillary. She is a potentially dangerour running mate because there seems to be so much antipathy towards her be several demographics, though frankly I don't really know why.

You're a twat. I bet you listen to Rush Limbaugh and watch Fox News. how can you support a person that wants to refashion the entire middle east with war?

Oh, I'm sorry. McCain was a prisoner of war. Therefore he must be qualified to be president. Shame he didn't take a stronger stand against torture...

He can read, which makes him better qualified than Bush.

I used to think you were just a bit barmy, now I think you're a dangerous, retarded nutter.

Couldn't agree more with you on those two past candidates. I am really happy Romney didn't get selected... I know people go off about McCain being another Bush, which is a load of horse manure, but I really feel that Romney really would have been more of the same... better than Bush, but definately on the same path....

Dont call me me buddy.

So Obama is a terrorist/communist loving fucker? Ok then?

Lets have a look at how the good ol' USA has done with a good ol' terrorist/cimmunist hater in office.

1- Converted the largest budget surplus into the largest budget deficit in less than two years 2- Allowed the US sub prime market to get totally out of control, thus causing the credit crunch, and thus causing the global economic problem we have today. 3- fucked up so badly with his South Asian and Middle Eastern policy which basically meant that Islamic Fundamentalism increased globally on an unprecedented scale 4- Katrina 5- Could've stopped 9/11. Couldnt be bothered. 6- Increase in homicide 7- Iraq. Where do yuo start on that? The failure of Edel Brock and BonoShed levels? The cost? the damage to to Internatinal relations? 8- The complete collapse in confidence in the US Economy on pretty much every level. (except arms manufacturers, obviously)

You know, considering Mccain wants to extend the Tax Cut, keep troop numbers at the same level in Iraq, has suggested nothing that would actually work to fix the US economy.

But those words "tax cut" by golly, do they ever resonate with idiots.

So whats your beef with Obama? Is it because he's black? Ir is it because he's related to Bin Laden (you know, he actually isnt)? Or is it because he's got the policies, thw attitude and the freshness that means he has the abilty to genuninely change your country? change, big scary word that. I suppose after being fed tonnes of bullshit by the Bush Administration and Fox News that your quite happy living in the knowledge that a terrorist attack or Communist invasion is not just possible, its imminent.

FYI. You know what Russia is doing in Georgia? Yeah. Well, they're just using that a base to spring a surprise attack on the USA. Trsut me. i saw it in command and Conquer Red Alert 2.

Slippin Jimmy Jamma wrote:

First get yer info straight before weilding off idiotic thoughts

1- Converted the largest budget surplus into the largest budget deficit in less than two years

How does a country have a "surplus" when it still has a deficit? Clinton only put money in one spot and called it a surplus and it made everyone feel all warm and fuzzy inside, but we still had a trillions in deficit.... maybe my idea of saving and owing is different???

2- Allowed the US sub prime market to get totally out of control, thus causing the credit crunch, and thus causing the global economic problem we have today.

This was ACTUALLY caused by Clinton's policies for Fanny mae and Mac, and the Clinton administration already took responsibility for it... it wasn't deliberate and I think they had the best interests in the policy, as Bush also ran with the same policy, but that policy failed.:reading:

3- fucked up so badly with his South Asian and Middle Eastern policy which basically meant that Islamic Fundamentalism increased globally on an unprecedented scale

As if any ME policy in the last 1000 years has gone well. The West and ME haven't gotten along. A stab at a new way to do things... did it work? We will have to wait and see as it is still in progress...

4- Katrina

Amazing how the Mayor and governor never receive any of the blame on this... much more thier failure than a federal failure...

5- Could've stopped 9/11. Couldnt be bothered.

Any issue 9 months into office is always considered the past adminstrations issues... hell they are learning the job at 9 months, not getting knee deep in crap... I would blame Clinton, but US policy was different before 9/11 and kept them from really being able to do anything proactive... Bush changed to a proactive way of handling things... unhappy that he's proactive and the way he's handling things, but at the same time wanting him to be proactive through a rearview... yer a hypocrite.

6- Increase in homicide

??? Seriously WTF? How does Bush have anything to do with this? He has no control over local governments... this makes absolutely no sense...

7- Iraq. Where do yuo start on that? The failure of Edel Brock and BonoShed levels? The cost? the damage to to Internatinal relations?

What am I being implicated in here? What is my level? what in Bono's level?
Lay off the gin before writing

8- The complete collapse in confidence in the US Economy on pretty much every level. (except arms manufacturers, obviously)

Economy is bad, yes... but a complete collapse? He's a lame duck president, look at the last time the economy crashed... it was... let me think... ummm... right before the elections when Clinton was a lame duck as well! HOLY SHIT! Could it be people are f'ing idiots and any bit of uncertianty and they start pulling thier money out of Wall Street, causing a collapse... they are called cycles....

Of course it sure doesn't help we are transfering all our money into to foriegn countries for oil, but that isn't a Bush issue, that's a "we don't have enough oil, but we want to mass consume it" idea in the populace... and before anything is said, only 30% comes from the ME, most comes from Mexico, Canada and South America....

You know, considering Mccain wants to extend the Tax Cut, keep troop numbers at the same level in Iraq, has suggested nothing that would actually work to fix the US economy.

ummm.... tax cuts yes... same troop levels no... go watch the news rather than getting yer info from the watercooler... you might actually LEARN something...

But those words "tax cut" by golly, do they ever resonate with idiots.

Possibly why Obama is also proposing tax cuts for the lower and middle class?

So whats your beef with Obama? Is it because he's black? Ir is it because he's related to Bin Laden (you know, he actually isnt)? Or is it because he's got the policies, thw attitude and the freshness that means he has the abilty to genuninely change your country? change, big scary word that. I suppose after being fed tonnes of bullshit by the Bush Administration and Fox News that your quite happy living in the knowledge that a terrorist attack or Communist invasion is not just possible, its imminent.

ummm... change is nice and would be great, but ummmmm... actually HOW is he going to do it? Going from a far right leaning presidency to a far left leaning presidency is change I guess... but far anything is not good for the country.....

on your other post, I agree McCain's economic policy isn't going to fix much, but the same goes for Obama's plan... this isn't my opinion, rather the opinion on CNN.... watch some news it might ACTUALLY enlighten you...

The subject isn't a debate between Obama & McCain; that will happen at the right time-- something you should have realized on your own.

The subject is Republican operatives using the internet to wage a campaign of fear and disinformation. Now, do you really want to argue that insinuating that Obama is a Muslim is "debating the issues"? Or do you agree that the Republican operatives who are waging that campaign of fear and disinformation are not "debating the issues"?

Hey, considering the guys whole manifesto seesm to be something along the lines of

1- I'm White! 2- I dont have a Muslim name 3- I will cut taxes 4- I was a in POW in Vietnam

then you'll have to forgive me for not understanding why anyone would want to vote for him.

But then again, I am dealing with people (and I use the term 'people' in its broadest possible context) who call Obama "B. Hussein" so maybe itsnot surprising.

Yes. Considering the name "Hussein" has some negative connatations to it, I thinks it rather misleading to just use "B. Hussein" rather than "Barack Hussein Obama". But then again, you just need to convince everyone that he is just a leftist subversive terrorist supporting communist guerilla.

Anyway, can one of the American geeks (thats 90% of you, by the way) explain to me what Eight years of Republican Party rule has done for them. And you aint allowed to say "well, they gave me $600!"

But then again, I am dealing with people (and I use the term 'people' in its broadest possible context) who call Obama "B. Hussein" so maybe itsnot surprising.

Dude's name is B. Hussein Obama. So what. We had a belly full of William Jefferson Clinton. Why not B. Hussein Obama?

Wow, really? that strikes me as very strange. There are lots and lots of people who won't vote for a black guy - doesn't the polling convince you of that? Four years ago at this time Kerry was trouncing Bush in the polls. Obama is barely ahead, even behind if you believe some pollsters. Why do you think the Republicans ran that commercial with Paris Hilton et al - white women, black guy - tapping into old fears and stereotypes. Or the commercial with Obama shooting a baskteball in Kuwait - one anonymous McCain staffer agreed in a recent article I read that it's very purposeful - basketball is a black man's game and if Obama was sinking a putt., they never would have run it because golf is a white man's game, Tiger Woods notwithstanding. Heck, even Bill Clinton pushed the racial line with Obama.

So, why, in your opinion, did B. Hussein's advance team recently remove two headscarved muslim women from sitting behind the podium of a campaign event?

Just curious.

Simple. Because the right wing media and some of the more firebrand campaigners on the McCain team would have used it against him.

You know, for supposedly "the greatest country on earth", its rather fucking idiotic, childish and downright foolish that a sizeable amount of the population believe that Obama is a Muslim.

Obama has been going more right to reach the center, so to get the less liberal and middle of the ground Democrats votes. The Presidential election might be different than the primaries, but I think the mass turn out of people voting for Obama and Clinton was driven by people wanting to be part of history... there really is lttle difference between the twos policies, yet the furvor over the whole issue came down to, did you want the first woman president -or- the first black president. It got all of their bases excited. Don't think Hilary and Obama played thhis card... Obama used it last week in his speech about change, adding that he doesn't look like guys on the dollar bills... a strike at people that are racist, yes, but also to excite others to want to vote just because he IS black.... as that somehow embodies 'change'.

Playing the Pollyanna isn't a very becoming role for you. Google "B. Hussein," and compare what you find with Tex's contribution to the discussion of "the issues."

I don't listen or watch news or political shows if it is strictly a right or left side hammering the other side. I try to watch the most unbiased shows to get my news, so I have never heard the B. Hussian thing until now. I have heard of people talk about the republican machine trying to paint a picture like this, but never saw any proof... granted I never devoted any time in trying to find it either. It is deplorable to try to paint a candidate that way. Each side has thier own way of going about doing this (Obama's "McCain would be another Bush for 4 more years" is a good example). I do my best to ignore these things, as they detract from the real issues.

I actually would vote for a Dem president, if I thought it would be the best overall for the US. I actually try to look at both candidates each night and weigh them... McCain just happens to come out on top for me.

Open any Political Science 101 textbook and it will tell you that the American political spectrum is far less diverse and skewing increasingly toward conservatism than the political spectrum in most other comparable nations. A heavily corporatized media prevents the spread of all but the most centrist opinions in this country--but even our centrist positions are right-of-center globally. Fact.

right-of-center globally, you are probably right there. and at what point was it far more diverse? There have been always two far sides with a center that stands middle ground starting with Jefferson and Hamilton.
The point still is that the center is the center, just because a textbook you read was written by a left-wing author that is unhappy where the center is doesn't change it is where the center is.

From Mark Penn - one of Hillary's top advisors and pollster..

""His roots to basic American culture and values are at best limited," Mr. Penn wrote in March 2007. "I cannot imagine America electing a president at a time of war who is not at his center fundamentally American in his thinking and values."

There is MUCH more where this came from in this months issue of Atlantic Monthly.

A question to our cousins across the pond, what type of coverage on US elections is in your media?

I ask because I talked to my wife today, as she is visiting her parents in Japan. She noted how The media in Japan are only covering Obama. She said by the sounds of it, he was running unopposed and she never heard anything about McCain.

Is there a similar imbalance of coverage in Europe as well?

Undoubtedly. It's well-known that Billary was running a Republican-style campaign. That fact doesn't mean the Republicans aren't doing it too.

Uhm, no. Jefferson's party was the Republican Party. The Republican Party split during the 1820s, with Andrew Jackson's supporters being the Democratic-Republicans, and the National Republicans (Whigs) being those opposed to Jackson.

Jefferson's party was the Democratic-Republican Party. But yes, I'll concede that they often called themselves "Republicans." That notwithstanding, the fact remains they were the party that eventually became the Democratic Party of today-- a fact diametrically opposed to what Edelbrock would have us believe.

And yes, there was a split in the party, with one faction becoming the National Republican Party. This party also drew heavily from former Federalists, and was eventually absorbed into the Whig Party. When the Republican Party was organized, it in turn drew its membership from the Whigs.

Thus, Jefferson was a Democrat, and Hamilton was a Federalist, the forerunner of the Republicans.

ummm... Republicans like Hamilton, I think not. Actually little is left of the Federalists ideals. Hamilton thought we should have a king or very strong central figure that does not need to be voted into office, that people are too stupid to govern themselves... neither side really thinks this way today. It might be argued that there are specific issues that fall in line with the 'people are too stupid to govern themselves' but neither party thinks this outright like Hamilton did.

Plus Jefferson's party is vastly different than Jackson's party (future Democrates of today)... thus the break-up of the Democrat-Republican party.

I personally believe in Jefferson's ideals far more than any party we have today... but in my opinion the Republican party falls more in line with Jefferson ideals than the Dems. A debatable issue since both parties take from Jefferson, and also have issues that are against his ideals.
