I'm no NASCAR fan, but what is yer issue with anything American Liam? Why all this pent up frustration?

Any racing series which sells sponsorship on multicar pileups, pretty much sucks.

For those of you who have never watched it, I do not mean that they gain an audience on crashes, and sell sponsorship based on that, I mean.......

"It's the Busch Series Big One brought to you by......" while 40 drivers demonstrate that the main reason they took up oval racing is that they are baffled by the middle pedal.

Funny enough, NR2004 (based on the game engine of my beloved GPL), is fun to drive now and then, there's something kinda zen about it, it's almost trancelike. I doubt Billy Ray JimBob the 17th from Incestville Alabama appreciates this, but you never know.

Couple races later, while cheating to help his son (Jnr....sigh), into the wall he goes and his "brain" gets ripped right off his spine. ROFMLAO. Never ever say "over my dead body" unless you mean it.

I've watched it a few times and I've never seen any driving ability on display. The cars don't look like they've been set up right either; traction seems to disappear all at once at the limit rather than being something that the drivers can play with to get maximum performance.

It's better than it used to be - the cars used to blow up as soon as anything touched them.

Days of Thunder was a great movie though, wasn't it

However, Nascars are not actually stock cars at all, no matter what they call them, they are custom built racers with tubular steel chassis (like was used in GP racing in Europe....in about 1915). Besides, our lowest spideypikie would seem full of airs and graces in a Nascar grandstand.

Colin's point about lack of traction is spot on, the NR2004 game is probably one of the most accurate sims ever made (since it was the last update to the GPL engine......at least until the pay-to-play iracing is fully ready), and the cars in it handle as if they have two normal front wheels, and at the back, a rocket motor and two shopping trolley wheels.....bloody terrifying.

At least they don't need a fucking computer to help them unlike F1 drivers.

NASCAR wasn't always like this. They used to be true built stock CARS, not the crap is today. If they were stock automobiles, like NASCAR of the 60s and 70s, then I would definately enjoy watching it... but if you are going to build a fast car from stratch, then thats what the F1 is for or drag racing.

It was ALWAYS lemming racing on ovals though. Big ass Yankmobiles, be they the genuine article or purpose built racers with the Big ass Yankmobile mentality in mind, just don't lend themselves to racing.

Indycars (ye olde ones pre civil war)were cool, CART is weird, I can never fathom the way they handle, they're sort of alien, but at least they're quick and go round corners of BOTH types. IRL is just hopeless....kinda like F3 or F Renault.....not something to hold up as a national racing series. Double so if you're gonna fill the weakling machines with idiots and shove them on ovals.....have seen IRL pileups that would have a whole stadium of Nascar fans shaking their heads......they're fucking single seaters, surely they can brake/avoid. Maybe they just don't know the golden rule.....if you see a spinning car, aim for it, because the one place it won't be when you get there is where it is now.

HEY! Watch it on the 'big, yankmobiles don't lend themselves to racing'... most of the cars that won in the 60s and 70s were Pontiacs... walking on dangerous ground there Doc

I agree on the Cart racing, as its fun to watch, but you do walk away with a different feeling. I, myself, like drag racing. One good thing about it is that there are so many clasifications for it. Unlike all the other racing events, you can watch pure stock vehicles to alcohol racers and everything inbetween. Its just about pure muscle and what little things they have done to the engine, drivetrain, etc. Sometimes long races can be tedious and sometimes politics gets involved, not so with drag races.

and while I agree with oval racing being boring, I love the Indy 500. I watch it religiously every year. Sure the handling portion is taken out of it, but the planning of the team, the perseverence of the driver, and the strength of the engine all come into one. The final 50 laps are always glorious.... you just never know what to expect in them.

To our friend Edle's point, the golden age of NASCAR was the 60's and 70's. Teams sitll had major factory support and a lot of technology that was gleaned from racing made it's way onto the showroom floor - trick engines, heavy duty suspensions and the very beginnings of the areo movement. Now, NASCAR is essentially a tin top spec racer series where "headlight" and "grill" stickers are the only way to tell one car from the next.

I will say this, NASCAR as a form of motorsport spectacle is something to behold in person. There's nothing quite like the sound (and feel) of 43 cars coming accross the strat/finish at the beginning of a race. I leave my earplugs out on purpose.........

Side note-

I had to laugh when Toyota entered the Craftsman Truck Series and they had to build a pushrod, carbureted engine. It had to have been 20 years since they'd done that.
