The US Presidential Election

Seeing as the conventions are coming up, we might as well have a thread on this.

I have studied Yank Politics in some detail, and still maintain somewhat of an interest in it. I have this to say on it though.

IF YOU ARE ELIGIBLE TO VOTE IN THIS YEARS US PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, AND DONT VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA, YOU ARE A CUNT.

Seeing as you are a cunt, I'll keep that in mind.....

It seems to be coming down for many people as being the smart black guy versus the old white guy. There are still a lot of people, mainly middle-aged white people, who simply do not want to vote for a smart-ass black guy.

The pundants hated McCain at first, but have totally warmed up the propaganda machine for him with issues of energy costs, hating muslims, blaming immigrants. Republicans = cheap oil, Democrats are said to want expensive oil so they can destroy the economy and build up a socialist police state like the USSR (listen to Sean Hannity or Rush Limbaugh).

Oddly, the right wing pundants have now taken the stand that Republicans are, and always have been the party that have looked toward the future in energy concerns and where society will get fuel. Of course for years these same pundants have said the energy crisis was a farce, that technology would solve everything because there was virtually endless supplies, and even thou Republicans were in control they did almost nothing to hedge against future rises in energy costs.

Pundants say all we have to do is give land/ ocean drilling to the oil companies and we will have affordable oil for 200+ years from North America, without any negatives. They are trying to tell people that this is all the Democrats fault that we are not using all this oil right now at half the price. It is all so simple and easy!

For sure. If McCain wins, it just show how much Americans are a bunch of boneheads. War, war, war, guns, recession, fuck the poor etc. And then four more years...

i can't imagine how the republicans can reasonably win the election this year, short of flying airplanes into buildings to scare everyone into voting for them.

With Bush's ratings so low, I am suprised that McCain is doing so well. Obama has a strong personna, I'll give him that. When it comes to foriegn relations I think it is what the country needs... but I really can't get past his policies.

And while everyone is over-generalizing about Republicans, McCain is quite a different Republican. Wish Obama's persona and McCain's policies and ability to reach across the table could be put together, it would be what this country really could use.

I wish Hunter Thompson as still around, I'd be interested to see what he made of it all. I feel really uncomfortable about how much money has to be spent on convincing people to vote in America. How can the advertised product bear any relation to the actual reality of administration under either of these men?

To me, American politics seems to be all about how resistant the people in office are to the various lobbies, unions and industries whi seem to have a great deal of power. Big oil and the arms industry seem to have determined foreign policy for years. Potential candidates should just announce how they intend to resist these forces. Or maybe they have done, I stopped being interested in March.

I have a bad feeling that McCain will win largely because too many Americans aren't ready to vote for a black (well, he's half black, but that's aparently the same as being 100% black) guy, not to mention a guy with a Muslim sounding name. Scary!

i once agreed with this but a great majority of new people that registered to vote have been for the democratic party. This is has given me reason to be hopeful.

It's all very odd around here. We're primarily a blue state, but with the RNC rolling into town everyone has gone crazy. I'm sure that was the goal. The giant banners they have put up at the convention site look strikingly similar to the Chinese flag. That, I am sure, they did not intend.

He has tried to lure in other voters and has gone more right than usual, but Obama has done similar changes to appeal to a wider audience as well... let's face niether candidate could win an election standing firmly in thier positions, they would ostrasize too many voters.

While there are those that won't vote for the guy because he is black, I do think there is also a good portion of people that will vote for him simply because he IS black. People want to be part of a movement and to be part of history, so that they can later say "I remember voting for the 1st black president"... plus it gives many whites proof to thier friends and loved ones that they are not racist "See, I voted for Obama so I can't be racist!"

I have a feeling the latter group is larger.

Couldn't they just lie to their friends and "claim" that they voted for Obama?

I mean...try to find anyone that will actually confess that they voted for Dubya...it's impossible...so I'm still not sure how he is a two term president...

Well here is one, but it wasn't because I liked Bush, rather I really didn't like Gore or Kerry. I wasn't happy voting for him, but it really was voting the lesser of evils. He is a two-term pres since the Dems really blew it by selecting Kerry, all they needed was someone slightly likable to beat Bush... and they picked Kerry...wtf

This election is much better, in that there are two viable candidates, not a bunch of half-wits lined up for the office... though I think a Clinton/Obama ticket would be much more viable on the Dems side... that ticket would have little weakness, whereas Obama running for president now has his weaknesses... if he ran after a VP office, he would be unstoppable.

It will be interesting to see what the voter turnout will be this time around. I suspect it will be relatively high. At least both candidates have some charisma.

An Obama/Clinton ticket might be strong, by pulling in both of those rather polarized groups, or it might be weaker because so many people seem to have Hillary. She is a potentially dangerour running mate because there seems to be so much antipathy towards her be several demographics, though frankly I don't really know why.
