Charlie and grandpa always got on my nerves, so did all the other kids... I loved Wonka because he let the kids get thier just desserts and was never too concerned when it happened...

I was gonna vote Veruca Salt, then I realized it wasn't the band.

So I went with the Oompa Loompas...

My favorite scene is when the kids are standing outside the factory, then Riff Raff lets them in and all the Oompa Loompas are doing the Time Warp, then Willy Wonka shows up in a corset and fishnets.

Did the author of the books ever present any history or explanation of who the Oompa Loompas were, and why they serve Willy Wonka? Mutants that have been created by Willy Wonka's failed candy experiments? Dwarf slaves decended from mole men?

The origin of the little fellows is clearly explained in the book.

From Wikipedia ...

"In fiction, the Oompa-Loompas were first featured in Roald Dahl's 1964 children's book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The original book first portrayed Oompa-Loompas as black pygmies from "the very deepest and darkest part of the African jungle where no white man had been before". The Oompa-Loompas natural enemy is the whangdoodle, an ambiguous but terrible monster. After the book's U.S. release, complaints of racism caused Dahl to rewrite the characters as dwarves with "golden-brown hair" and "rosy-white" skin."

My favourite ever childhood book was "The last of the really great Whangdoodle's", written by Julie Andrews (Yes, THE Julie Andrews)

The Whangdoodle's are peaceful!

If any of you NOOLers have kids, I highly recommend this book.
