I took guitar in high school and then quit after a year or so but I would really like to take it up again. Am I too old to start learning this crap now (35)...should I even bother? Anyone know of any half decent accoustic guitars for starting out?

At yer age its easier to move up to an accoustic guitar... start with coconut shells, then the gazzoo, then macciachas, so on and so forth.
It's never too late to learn anything! Willingness and determination has more to do with it than age. I took up the drums at 30...

Total truth. The only thing holding older people back is that they can't be arsed.
Eg,me.....when presented with a new synth, I no longer spend hours (or weeks) pointlessly fucking about with it until I can not only make it do everything it was meant to, but a few things it wasn't......these days I've become a DX7ist.....flicking through presets all day. In my defence, I will still dive in and edit a sound if it's a "close but no cigar" job.....but that's only because years of earlier learning have given me the power to spot a filter at 1000 paces, regarless of it's being called a temporally modulated frequency rejection matrix.
FFS, I'm still learning bass, HOOKY is still learning bass. Geddy Lee is still learning bass. There is no moment when you've "finished", so why should there be any one where it's too late to start.

wish you'd take up MY drums, i fuckin hate carting the fuckers around all the time my tip is, take up something small, jews harp, harmonica, the triangle, etc.... or just get a guitar, try and get something with a nice (low set)action, easier to play, i got a brand new( slight second) acoustic a few years ago for £45!!!, nice to play, doesn't sound too bad neither. especialy when played properly. (ie by someone else)
I've been thrashing out the same three songs on an ever-growing collection of guitars for years and I fit squarely into the category of 'can't be arsed to learn properly', although I do get enormous pleasure from it (although nobody else does).
My Dad bought a guitar last year, practised every day and is now about thirty times better than me.
the first tribute band I went to see were 'The Jamm' - who were excellent. I spoke to their 'paul weller' afterwards who said that the band was his main income, doing 3 or 4 gigs a week, and he'd only started learning guitar at 35 too.

Give it a go, what is there to loose? I play guitar quite badly, keyboards not very good and bass below average, but I love playing, I'm tempted to get a set of drums and have a bash, but I've just not got the room (or budget!), I can see myself caving in at some point though! I don't really need to put the car in the garage do I?
I've ben thinking about taking drum lessons. Trumpet was my primary instrument but my self destructive habits got the best of me and I decided to get braces in preparation for orthodontic surgery and flush my god given talent down the drain. I used to fuck around on drum sets and play snare in marching band. All the coordination is there but my wrists are pretty stiff. Anyway, it's definately not too late to learn. Do yourself a favor and give it a shot.
well said...thanks for the inspirational words!! i want to run out now and buy one..sadly all of the shops are now closed. it guess i will have to wait til the morning then. Any suggestions on what make/model is half way decent to start off with? I'm looking at the $150.00-$200.00 range for now.
I would hope so. Mostly because I'm yet to even try and learn an instrument (I'm 19).
And also, because my dad's just started learning to play guitar again (he used to practice it as a teenager). He's even spent £70 on a second hand telecaster (one of the cheaper versions, not a Fender) and is soon to buy a roland amp.
Hope he's not wasting his money.

Never too late! I'm 43 and although I bought my first bass 10 years ago,and been playing by ear, I turned up at a jam night about 18 months ago. And I've learnt more playing with others (oo-er) than I would have learnt out of a book.Not just basics but playing within the dynamic of a band. So many places doing jam nights in the week now. I get a buzz more from playing bass than dj-ing now.And I'm auditioning for bands now.

I started checking out guitars! I bought a "how to" book and I'm still deciding what to get. I'm really excited about getting started again.
If you want to start out playing guitar and see if it's 'For you' then get a budget electric set up or accoustic, depending on your aims. Grab a simple 'Chords for idiots' book so you know where to put your fingers (fnarr) and play along with your favourites. Even I can do bar chords...
It really is never too late to learn. Older people playing together in bands should be encouraged.

id say its never too late to try anything. if you can master a chord u can get away with playing every major and minor chord. i still love to play (adter 20 years). love making up stuff. wish I had more time though.

Thanks for the link! It's going to take me a while to get through all that info. I did get my guitar a couple of days ago and I am proud to say that I can now play the E, F, G, B, C, D cords - it's kinda hard because I'm learning to find the positioning of the fingers on the frets and read music at the same time...I love it though. Now I need to search for some decent sheet music (I know I'm jumping a ahead of myself).
