Roger Taylor from Duran Duran? The bloke from the Scissor Sisters?
My vote, to the surprise of nobody I'm sure, goes to Clem Burke from Blondie. He is Blondie, in fact.
Listen to Under the Gun from the Live in New York album if you don't believe me.

I've been meaning to start this thread for MONTHS, specifically to see what OLF thinks of Clem.
I could have just asked him, I suppose.
Or I could have just KNOWN.
Ever seen him play, Leady?
After somebody saying about him a while back, I paid extra attention in Barcelona when Blondie were on. He really is amazing.
A special mention should go to Def Leppard's one armed Rick Allen.
Oh and the drummer from Monaco was quite good ![]()

jem told ME that she loved ME...
TWICE even...
of course I think she was quite drunk both times...soooooo....
he gets slagged off in poncey drumming mags as not being technically brilliant, but i think he ads SO much to blondies stuff, they would be crap with anyone else. and he's a great showman.

Sort of agree.......................

I am dead surprised to hear that. Mind you, I know so little about drumming that I wouldn't know what made a technically brilliant one. I just like a drummer to keep good time and then get on the rides near the end.
(I'll leave the gags about poncey drumming mags to Dr - he'll do a much better job than me.)
My mate Elliot is a good drummer, in my opinion. Got a lightness of touch most of the time, but can kick the fuck of out them when he wants to.
And Bruce Robertson, although he's more jazz than pop in my opinion.
Jem - you can't have Led Zep cos he's a rocker ![]()

No drummer mag gags I fear, but I can offer two good definintions of a technically brilliant drummer.
One you can't dance to.
One who sounds exactly like a really shite one, but moves a lot less.
(little known fact....the better a drummer is, the less they move.....Lars Ulrich, leaps around like a gibbon and is a fucktard, but yer average 97 year old jazzist, who can play any 6 of Mr Ulrich's grooves at the same time, can do it all with no movement visible to the naken eye.)

My almost-sister Rachael once dated a drummer mate of mine (against my advice naturally, don't want her brining that sort home with her, what WILL the neihbours think).
Upon seeing him all kitted up for the first time, she wore a bemused look. After a while he enquired as to the source of her bogglement....."where's the stick you hit the bass drum with?" "errrrm, you hit it with a pedal (shows her the pedal)" "oh, I thought you played it with a beater like the boys in the billie bigot bands, cos that guy in Def Leopard is always reaching down there to do SOMEthing".
True story, hand on heart.
Mate laughed so hard he had to leave the room, and let me explain it to her.

Gayer than a gay thing in pink frilly knickers, if we're doing drumming monkeys...............
Music is a WHOLE lot easier on the ear (mine anyway) too.

Indeed. Also saw him live touring with Peter Case and the Plimsouls on their reunion tour a few years back, can't recall being as taken with a drummer in a long while.
clem burke ,indeed added a lot to blondie and gave the eurythmics a pop slant when he joined em.
top man.
ive heard hese mine
Yes, but it's good news because now I can find out all about it and get records and videos and it will SEEM TO ME that it just happened.

this was one of my favourite jokes for about five years. while i lived with a drummer.
he thinks little stewie copeland is best.
Special mention to Bruce Mitchell, who I saw last night.
As he walked past, I said to my mate "there's Bruce Mitchell", all excited. I then noticed that I was standing RIGHT next to Steve Morris.
THAT'S how good Bruce Mitchell is (based on the ONCE that I've seen him play live)

beck, did i ever say what a fantastic woman you are?, any woman that puts up with a drummer for any amount of time has my undying respect, and my wifes sympathies![]()
Dave Grohl - In his Nirvana days
William Goldsmith - Foo Fighters
and of course, Stephen Morris. With sad news from XFM's interview with Hooky, looks like they are not getting back![]()

Oops, maybe it was Taylor Hawkins the drummer on All My Life.
He has replaced William Goldsmith
I'm listening to Blondie Live in NY today at my desk.
I always forget how poor the guitars are on Blondie's records. Live they are just apaling.
Has Chris Stein always been uttershite?

i met the foo fighters in london 10 years ago, they were staying in the same hotel as us, and taylor hawkins was playing for them then![]()
I rather like Rick Buckler's drumming.
I've played with a couple of excellent drummers (fnarr) Pablo Videla, an Argentinian who had two bass drums with double pedals and could produce a faster roll than most drummers on a snare. Also Tony Dove - lovely drummer who could always get any audience up and dancing. Trotsky from Subhumans and Culture Shock is pretty good too...
NO Regret wrote: Id go for the one from Erasure or Pet SHop Boys. Theyre timing is incredible.
Nice try, but MIDI equipment has TERRIBLE timing, for one, rather fucking obvious reason (it's serial, digital), it cannot EVER play two notes at the same time, it's a scientific impossibility (whereas with an organic drummer it's just fucking unlikely).
Oh, how about Rat Scabies of The Damned?
I know they're 'officially' punk not pop, but some of the drumming on his solo tracks is fantastic. Nice guy too!

One of the funnuiest things floating around my memory is a snippet from (probably) the Old Grey Whistle Test. Something about "this is why we get through so many drummers", and Rat getting a bass on the bonce. Or it was possibly "this is why we get through so many bass players", and Rat handing out the four-stringed smackdown....twas a long time ago, but did more to make up for their lead singer being a nob (hair-do, make-up....sounds like fat bob), than almost anything else.
It was 'Getting through so many bass players' Steve.
Chris was the drummer all the way through.
Out of the archives, here's a pic of me in the Damned Tribute band, 'The Doomed'...
Oh... just to add... I was 'Captain Sensible' NOT Dave Vanian LOL
