Congestion Charge Rejected in Manchester.

In other news, Turkeys have overwhelmingly voted no on the recent Christmas proposals.
Seriously now, What was the point of the referendum? Everyone knew it was going to be rejected. They should have just implemented the thing and said "fuck you" to everyone.
Public transport in Manchester is a joke. But congestion is beyond a joke. I was quite happy to see all these fuckers driving down the Oldham Road to be charged. Suited me down to the ground. Of course, whether the £1.6 Billion the council was going to get from central government for Public transport would ever materialise is questionable, and even more questionable would be whether it would help make the trains run on time.
The good folk of Greater Manchester were just scared that if the charge was introduced the council would just end up extending the tram line to Chorley and thus letting the great unwashed into the city centre.
And we wouldn't want that, would we???
Was there really a need for one in Manc?
The one in London has done sweet F.A. for actual congestion.
The roads are probably busier than they were before it was brought in.
I've yet to see any massive improvement in public transport as well (where some of the proceeds of the CC are meant to go) the tube is still as unreliable at rush hour as it ever was. At least in my neck of the woods. Fcuk knows how it will cope with the influx of people for 2012 if it can't cope with the Thursday night rush hour of people going home from work.

I understand the argument for the charge and agree improvements need to be made to the public transport system. However, this charge would have crippled me. £100-£125 a month just to come to work. Could you afford that?
I would love to ditch my car and take public transport for many reasons. I am quite green and used to enjoy letting the train take the strain. I always found the commute to work relaxing and it is much more appealing than sitting bumper to bumper on the M60 each morning.
Unfortunately in my job I have to drive. There is no way I could rely on public transport. It would take me a bus, a long walk, a train, a walk, a tram and another long walk just to get to work. I did it once, it took me 2 hours.
I have sites all over North Manchester and need to be available. Buses for me just don't work.
So I will be celebrating this tonight and 'HAPPY TO SEE YOU FUCKERS' scowling

They achieve nothing but some easy cash for the fucks that set them up. Any congestion charges one does pay should be deducted from they annual road tax bill (after all don't you pay road tax already to drive on those roads).
Don't get me wrong, I far prefer sitting me fat arse down on a train, and would much rather there were no petrol powered cars allowed inside town limits.....but stealing people's money in the name of nonsense enviro-mentalist reasons is just wrong (and entirely indicative of current governemt practice and attitudes).
Trains from city to city, busses from town to town, publicly run electric cars within town/city limits, sorted. Internal combustion engine vehicles kept for what they are best at......getting to places in the ringpiece of nowhere.
Oh and the only thing I found wrong with public transport on the brown isle was that it baffled me.....Liam can vouch that the rail "network" here, is a little more errrrrrrm simplistic. Yes a train broke down on me and nearly cost me my plane home, but in the 30 mins I fannied about waiting, about 30 trains went in and out of the station, it's a wonder MORE don't fail......and they got a gang out and unfucked the points, while the line was in service, in about 25 minutes. They also offered to pay for a taxi to get me to my plane....bastards eh? I also love the underground, but have to admit I'd fucking hate it during rush hour (distant memories of being on it when a little un....not nice).
I'm actually smug as i was telling anyone who would listen that all ten boroughs would vote no.

My best friend, who is a trainee solicitor and one of the top law firms in the country (and who probably makes more money than you with your little minicabbing business) takes the train to work. Is he a barbarian?
When i start my new job on the Isle of Man. I'll be getting a taxi (sorry, minicab!) to work. Courtesy of the tax payer. I guess that proves, after years of debate, that I'm not actually a barbarian. Which is a shame. I always quite fancied the diea of storming around wearing antlers and a big cape, pillaging villages etc.

No salary in the world could possibly justify risking the prospect of spending 2 hours a day sat next to a fat man with tourettes rocking his head to his drum and barse.
I wouldn't get on a bus if you paid me. I walk an extra bit to get the train. Glasgow buses are uncomforatble, slow and full of bams.
Started to learn to drive back in August at the ripe old age of 34. Test booked in for January. That said, even when I do pass, I'll still take the train and the subway for zipping about town. Much quicker than driving during the daytime.
On another note, I send my company's van down to central London at least once a month and we've only been fined for not paying the congestion charge once since January. The system's fucked!

For all the talk of suicide bombs on buses, the chances of being severely damaged by the more local riff raff are much higher - happy slapping, drunkards etcetc. Even buses in India are more civilised - sure there are chaps hanging out of the window and riding on the roof, but never ever could it be called threatening.

I'd have thought that you of all people would grasp the fact that there is no such thing as 'Road Tax' for using the tarmac.
It's a charge of 'Road Fund Licence' for the privledge of using an internal combustion engine on the public highway

As much as Manc deserves a good public service,why the fuck should WE subsidise PRIVATE companies,erm charging people up to £5 return on Metrolink for people who desperately need to use it before 9am.Oh and without the use of a bloody seat may I add. It might work in London,because they've got a good tube service. I don't dislike using buses. I was working for 6 weeks in Manchester City Centre,and it was great just chilling out to my I-pod,and being able to sneak off for a couple of Jars in the dinner hour. Where I work now,it'd be a bloody nightmare getting to work on public transport. And why on earth would I want to pay £200 a year Car Tax and £36 a month insurance just to keep it on the driveway?
