Threatening Signs in Ingleside Neighborhood
CORPUS CHRISTI, Tx - Bold yellow signs display a blantantly bold message outside Arturo Martinez's Ingleside home on San Angelo Avenue. They proclaim "Kill an Israeli, Save the World" and Israelis are the "anti-christ" and "baby killers." Martinez put the signs up two weeks ago in response to the recent Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Also, Martinez's American Flag is hung at half staff and upside down, because he believes his civil rights have been violated dating back decades.
"I remember back in 1st grade my butt was black and blue for speaking spanish. A violation of the 1st ammendment! I'm 60 years old. Nothing's changed," Martinez says.
All this sits right across from Blaschke Elementary School, sparking concern among parents and administrators. None of them would talk on camera, but many have talked to police.
Martinez says he put up the signs because he believes in the message, and it's within his first ammendment rights. Police say that's true. Authorities can do nothing as long as the signs remain on Martinez's property. Officers did already make him remove profanity from his display.
Off camera, neighbors say the signs are definetely disturbing. In fact, some students at Blaschke Elementary agree. Several of them have discussed staging a demonstration to convince Martinez to take down the signs. Moments after we spoke with him, Martinez scratched out the word "kill" on this sign. Martinez says he will likely take the signs down all together tomorrow.
