had a paper round when I first went to secondary school, morning and evening, extra round on Sat evening football Pink and football Buff for Ex Pat Boltonians.
Summer Holidays though me and me mates ran errands for any building sites in the area, so if you've ever been stuck in a chippy whilst some inconsiderate fucker with a cardboard box orders 44 portions of chips with various bits and bobs you'll know what the job involved. Tips were incredible, keep the change etc, in fact taking into account inflation I probably aint earned anything as good since:\ohwell:
until last month i helped out daughters of order with there delivery of the local monthly paper,, wife was spotted as well blimey went the call, i didt know times were that hard.
round and round
saturday football pink !!! wow used to be able to get it about half an hour after coming out of the ground. i think it had scores in it that were taken from about 60 minutes in the games.

'round our way the football Pink was for City and United fans, though it has to be said very few Blues around in our area when I was a kid.
the Buff ( printed by the Bolton Evening News ) was for Bolton fans only, neither clan would be seen dead with a copy of the wrong paper.
and yes it was uncanny how fast they were on sale
Had a paper route when I was 9 - 16. Its how I bought all my comic books as a kid and then saved for my first car.
Wish my son could have one, but people aren't really reading papers these days... and all the adults stole the routes so kids aren't hired for them anymore.![]()
I'm too young to have had a paper route. Nanny state people said you had to be 16 and local papers wanted you to deliver in car not bikes or walking, and by that time I had more lucrative work available.

quality mate
i had one,£7.50 a week lol,and then spend it up at the snooker hall with Shugzv.. not many frames then..
yeah, I had one as well, first job too. a strange man cruising around our neighbourhood in a car stopped in the street and asked me if I wanted a "job".
thankfully he was talking about the paper route, anything else I would've reported him to the police..![]()
Did it for 18 months, got named carrier of the month once, so I got my mug in the paper for that. This after a rough second week when, in an effort to create more room in my paper bag, removed all of the adverts from every copy. I heard more than one time about that incident that "they were the best part of the paper!"
nope...dad drug me around to various construction sites...then when I asked if I was going to get paid, he asked if I had a roof over my head and three square meals a day...
fucker...

Cider Jane got votes for that once in Bulls Head, Walkden. She didn't get her name in the paper though until they printed her obituary when she was 43.
some called her a bit of a character
most called her a skanky fucker
the Landlady called her darling.
just a little aside like
My round included delivering to Mark Wright (lanky ex Southampton, Liverpool and England ginger freak).
Tosser never gave me a tip at Christmas.
They used to print the scores onto the edges of the pages of the Pink on a little printing press outside Maine Road (and, no doubt, everyone else's ground). Stop Press. Now everyone's trudging out looking at the rest of the scores on their their mobile phones. And the other thing that's changed is that there's no fucking point wondering what everyone else's scores are because it's Wednesday evening and everyone else played their games on Sunday. Oh and anyone trudging out of Maine Road these days would notice a distinct lack of other football fans. Or football. Times change: get over it.

what about the rolled tabloid of in the back pocket, has that gone too? Replaced by a Blackberry or somesuch.
still we fans of Walkden Town FC are used to noticing a lack of other fans; and football come to think of it, the on field rucks are a thing to behold though, Sunday league football; a bloodsport in all but name .
A Blackberry is no substitute to a loosely-rolled tabloid that has been bent in half. Like a fcuking half brick as long as you keep hold of it, but useless as a projectile. Perhaps this is where the Blackberry would come into it's, albeit costly, own. I bet they're all the rage at the rich clubs.

was on the receiving end of a rolled up Daily Mirror/Sun when United played Bolton in the old Division Two, wondered what the fook had hit me. First away game with United too I think, either that or Blackpool... maybe even Oldham, deffo not Fulham and the F-troop, that was for the bigger and older lads I was only about 13 at the time. and being skint a lot of the time could never countenance the idea of throwing coins so a Blackberry may have replaced the traditional dart?
doubt if you could better the iconic photo of a fan with a dart in the top of his skull, not with a Blackberry anyways, maybe one of they Razr phones
