I'm siding with Mike on this one. No matter how insane he is, he's right about Hillage. Fripp would be a close 2nd.
Dunno about greatest guitarist, but I had the pleasure to chat to Steve & Miquette for about half an hour (whilst extremely pissed), and they had the good grace to put up with me talking bollocks... 
For that, Steve gets my vote!

Can't even use Barney's one genuine outstanding talent ( he is a guitarist with a sense of rhythm, that's rarer than hobby horse shite), cos Hillage has mastered the art of counting to four too.
But you see, Barney's got magical inverted playing styles. Glasto 81 displays this rare form. Also, to be able to play "pumped full of drugs" is still an achievement. The other fooked royally person I like, is Craig Nicholls, for his stage antics.
Barney's problem is that his guitar sounds like a guitar. Since the guitar is the most horrible thin, reedy, irritating racket when played "properly", all guitarists except Hillage and Fripp are just annoying cunts.

Bernard is head knees and shoulders above Marr, even Marr's guitar you can hardly hear on the Queen is Dead. Sumner has a nicely minimal style. Marr's contribution on Electonic was also fairly sparse. Otherwise, Britpop (93-7) was a good era for guitarists.

Reg Dave, the others are pretty great as well.
Not as much a fan a fan of The Johnny Marr/Jon Squire school of guitar-great I admit, but good Blues guitar will always make me super happy.

The guy comes out of a church onto the plains with guitar and launches into a blistering solo (and the ruddy things not even plugged into an amp!). And he smokes a fag while managing not to burn his huge fuzzy hair! And its windy.
Truely a guitar hero in every sense. He even looks like the dude used on promotion of Guitar Hero. But which came first?

that's not what i said. I would have to agree that Hillage is more skilled but its too much wankery for me.
Not everyone's cup of tea, and his guitar could do with a bit of a tune up sometimes, but I've got a lot of time for Jack White, especially live.
