what are you watching now?

we seem to do a lot of chatting about whatever we're watching on't telly, so i thought a dedicated thread might be in order...

watched ruby sparks (film) last night. really liked it. reminded me eversoslightly of eternal sunshine (though not a patch), and pisses all over that horrendous 500 days of summer. critiques the 'manic pixie dream girl' myth rather nicely.

edit: it's got a pretty nifty soundtrack too - a bit offbeat without being painful.

Not actually watching this minute but have got into Broadchurch lately.It's 8 bloody episodes though, that's a long slog.

Watched the first episode of In The Flesh on BBC3 last Sunday night and will watch or record episode 2 tonight. Yarn about Zombies being brought back to health and back into society and how society accepts (or doesn't accept) former zombies with 'Partially Deceased Syndrome'

yep, i'm enjoying these two so far too. broadchurch benefits from comparison with the terrible sub-twin peaks 'mayday' thing that started about the same time.

dare i say i think olivia colman is overrated? (i haven't seen tyrannosaur yet, though - maybe that will sway me.)

Yeah i know what you mean about Mayday though it was alright in places.Just thought it was funny that Harry from Spooks was a peeping tom in it lol.And funny when after he killed himself his Mrs fed his ashes to the dog

First saw this movie a couple of years ago but watched again today.Low budget sci fi about this guy trying to get his employer's daughter across an infected alien zone in Mexico back to the U.S.

Now, i cannot stress this highly enough - DO NOT BE PUT OFF BY THE DUMB TITLE OF THE FILM.It is not some Independence Day style brainless aliens invading the earth type crap.It is quite slow paced yes, but ultimately rewarding.Watch it.

Right now on BBC4 - Nile Rodgers documentary "The Hitmaker".. To be followed by a Ziggy doc and more Bowie after that.. I love BBC4 on a Friday.

Genius. A Badlands for the 21st Century, with more humour and Brummie accents.

Been catching up with a lot of British horrors of later. All our horrors seem to fall into two categories now - tower blocks infested with feral chavs (Citadel, Community, Tower Block) or rural farmlands populated by inbred yocals (Fallow Field, Inbred)

i've been meaning to watch sightseers for ages; looks excellent. i'll have to get round to it.

anyone see doctor who last night? i think we must only continue watching it in this household because of the production values and because matt smith is brilliant. (my heart stops slightly at the thought of how smug and self-indulgent the 50th anniversary celebrations could be.)

and now i will i-player depeche mode on jonathan ross (is he still on the bbc? no?), and weep for my lost youth.

God i haven't seen any of those.Will maybe look into "acquiring" one or two of em.That Sightseers looks very interesting and Inbred too

and i say that with sorrow, as a huge fan of duffle coats, curly hair, and tv detectives. i have never ever seen or read such a ridiculous plot in all my life. then, just when you thought it couldn't get any worse, they chuck in a farcical sub-plot or two which are EVEN MORE ludicrous!

but we have to watch it in SHIFTS because my teenage sons have seen the trailer, spotted there's some sex in it, and refuse view it with their mother.

Sightseers was brilliant.Some great lines in that one- "That wasn't a person,Tina, it was a Daily Mail reader" LOL

Inbred was, erm, interesting! Dreadful acting at times though.

TV wise i had a look at the first episode of The Village on bbc1.Usually struggle with John Simm but i thought he was good in this, the child actor playing his youngest son was better though - brilliant acting for a kid.

Doctor Who was alright but then most first episodes of that usually are then the rest of the series goes downhill. Do like his new assistant though

Django Unchained. Good film but I wish Tarantino didn't make a cameo appearance in all his films. He needs to quit doing that .

Inbred is dreadful, isn't it? We haven't produced a decent horror on these shores since Eden Lake.

I saw 'Welcome to the Punch' last night. Was a bit disappointed. Lot of style over substance really. Truly brilliant British cast but not sure James McAvoy is the right person to carry off the role of tightly-wound copper on a revenge trip.

just adding my voice to the chorus of approval for 'sightseers'. very good.

now watching 'the holiday', of which i shall never ever tire, despite its vast shitness.

Never Let Me Go, which Nora recommended some months back.Yes, an interesting film,i liked it.Actually maybe liked isn't the right word.It left a slightly depressing, haunted feeling.But that's not a bad thing.Rather a film leave any kind of lasting impression than being immediately forgettable once the credits roll.

I guess the obvious question is why didn't they do a runner and escape their fate which was to "complete"? Maybe it's because they weren't equipped for the world as evidenced when in the cafe they didn't even know how to order food? Or it's because the message maybe with the film is that we could all do a runner from the paths set out for us but few rarely do? Which is alarming.

So yeah - depressing, haunting and alarming.

Yeah Australian,WTF indeed. I don't know, i just think his cameo was an unwanted distraction.You could almost see in the eyes of the actor playing Django in that scene where he's on his knees talking to Tarantino's character a look of less conviction than he has in the rest of the film.Like he's thinking "this is fucking stupid having Tarantino in this part"

i'm excited by the return of 'game of thrones' at the moment. watched the second ep of the new series the other day, and was trying to sing "game of thrones, game of thrones, game of thrones" etc along with the theme tune, but it just wouldn't work. now i know why - it should go like this:

Ah , just read up a bit more on it.They're all tagged anyway so that's one reason they can't escape? I know they had to swipe in and out of Hailsham and The Cottages but somehow missed that they are still wearing the bracelets later on. That and the fact they're raised at Hailsham to be docile. But there's more to it than those two straightforward reasons for them not escaping.

Reminded me a bit of Atonement the way two people (Kathy H and Tommy) are heartbreakingly kept apart from each other for most of their lifetimes by another's (Ruth) actions until it's too late.

Well I've seen her in the Wall Street sequel that came out a couple of years ago, and of course she was in the Ryan Gosling film Drive about the stunt man/ getaway driver who didn't say a lot. I really liked Drive, although i might have liked it even more if there had been just a teeny bit more dialogue in it.

Drive, of course! Yep I knew it was something more recent than that Dr Who episode I'd seen her in. Yeah not a bad film that. That song A Real Hero in that movie is a good tune, and also the Kavinsky track.

Seven Psychopaths.Quality film but maddening at the end when as the credits start and the fantastic Different Drum by Stone Poneys feat Linda Ronstadt starts playing but after a few seconds it cuts off and goes to Tom Waits' character phoning Colin Farrell's character to ask him why he hadn't included his requested message at the end of the film .
